Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Did I strike a nerve OggDude? I didn't intend to offend at all...

I don't think there was any indication that you offended anyone. It looked to me like OggDude was taking the interest fully on board and trying to gather information about how people would want a "Weapon Cards" feature implemented.

Sorry. I read it in the tone of "Of course you want this, would you like this as well, and maybe some of that, its not like I've already done enough."

As a GM Weapon cards are great.

The last time I setup a time for my players to go to a shop, I found neat picture cards of weapons and armor and gear and made it into a catalog of sorts. My Players loved the ability to look at it to decide. Also I made a modified one with ships with the encounter section of the tool. They got to see all the stats before purchase and ended up going against what they had planned for the ship they wanted.

Along the same vein, if a "card" size statblock could be made. I could use that to setup the enemies without having to print out a forest.

No, no, prog is right :) I think it's a good idea, just wanted to get a feel for what people might like in them.

One issue is that most of the gear pictures are line drawings. For cards, I'm sure people would like full-color pictures.

One thing we could do over time is update all the gear pictures to color. I know some other people have done a great job creating gear cards. I'm wondering if I could borrow those pictures and use them for mine. It would save a bunch of time.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the rules, but I'm not sure if maybe this is a bug either. If I am correct, I can select each obligation once, provided I don't go over double the obligation. So if we start at 20, I could pick up both 10 options, or a 10 and both 5's. So long as I don't go over 40. If that is a correct assumption, then I haven't been able to reproduce this in the generator.

A couple things...

According to RAW, you can only take additional obligation up to your starting obligation (with no restrictions as to how you distribute it). Also according to RAW, you can only take ONE of each obligation bonus (credits and XP), so you can end up taking extra credits for 5ob OR 10 ob, then additional xp for 5ob OR 10ob, but you cannot take BOTH 5xp AND 10xp (or both of the credits version). **EDIT: this was incorrect. I misinterpreted the rules. It is set up to choose all four options if you have enough obligation.

So, to use the obligation feature in Ogg's program, you have to set the points first (in your case, you would make the 20 to start, then add up to 20), then just under the obligation selection pane, you'll see a drop-down selector for "starting obligation" set this to 20 (or 15). Then you can select the bonuses. Ogg has set it up so if your GM permits, you can take all four if you want (you just have to set the "starting obligation" high enough, then also have the additional obligation points set in the obligation pane).

So (due to a chain of events), I completely uninstalled the program and files (after backing them all up, of course). Now, as I'm trying to reinstall it from the google web install, I keep getting this message half way through...
Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance."
Clicking OK closes it down, clicking Details gives me this...

Yeah, I did. (1) So, is this something everyone would like? (2) I'm assuming you'd want them double-sided? (3) Multiples per page? (4) Various sizes? (5) And something like stat blocks where you can change the background and colors, etc?

MY OPINIONS:

(1) Yes EVERYONE would like these. :) Even those that don't know it yet. I've used custom gear cards through FFG Warhammer and now EotE (both use the same game system). They are great help.

(2) I'm not actually for double-sided. I started putting cool pictures and descriptive text on one side. While that is nice, that side eventually ends up always being flipped over after one reading. When I started making EotE cards I made them large with a dotted line half way down planning on folding them in half. I ended up not folding them. It's nice to have the picture (easy to identify and grab) and the game stats all on one side (don't need to flip the card over). Small graphic, don't need to flood the entire card with it (also see 5 below).

(3) That would be a great help.

(4) Not required unless you want to give options such as what I discussed in (2) - one-sided versus two-sided.

(5) Yes some sort of stat block drug from your generator including the attachments, mods, etc. of custom gear. Different colors? The only benefit I can think of is if you do something where different background colors are for different types of cards? Red for Weapons, Green for Armor, Brown for Gear, etc. PLEASE don't make them over colorful. Borders of color for example, not full card color. Saves us who want to print tons of them from blowing through ink cartridges or sneaking a thumb drive into work. :)

Just my one opinion. Use your own sense you've done great work so far! Thanks for considering cards! This is more important to me then the character sheet believe it or not.

Are you sure that's RAW? The way I read the book is the way Ogg has it set up: that you can choose each of the 4 options once. Do you know of a clarification that I've missed?

I agree with @GoblynByte, my understanding (and I see nothing in the CRBs to suggest this isn't their meaning) is that each option not each section of options is selectable only once.

My apologies, I was afb and going off memory; it was my misunderstanding. RAW is written "...may choose each option once." and I had interpreted "option" as xp or creds.

Re-reading that section again, you are correct; you can choose up to all four once each.

So with that in mind, make your first obligation 20, then add another 20, then set "starting obligation" to 20 and select the three you want.

I am going by second-hand info so I hope I'm doing this right.

My brother tried to install the character generator but ran into a problem. While setup was running and it was downloading, it got about 25% complete and stopped with an error that said it couldn't find a file. I can't decipher the error message. It was cut & pasted for me.. well... cut. I'm doing the pasting:

Have him try it again. If he still has problems, have him uninstall his previous web install (if any) and try one more time. He might also try the DropBox web install and see if that works any better. I updated my install from Google Drive and it worked fine.

Ok. Thank you. I'll let you know if he has any more trouble.

It worked!

Translated from Jock Boy Speak to (Kinda) Nerdy Girl Speak, an additional hard drive was installed in this computer. He moved the old version from the old directory to the new hard drive not realizing that there must have been an environmental setting. Much like the rest of the world, the environmental setting had no idea what he was doing nor why!

So he moved it back, ran the web install and it worked fine.

I would have chalked it up to a PEBKAC error but this is my computer and that would mean me, most of the time. He just keeps installing stuff on my machine because, as my dad says, he goes out of his way to install malware on his own machine and now nothing runs right on it. Since it's specific to him, I'm calling it an ID10T error (which is not nearly as funny in Braille, btw, but the context is still there) and closing this ticket! :P

tl;dr my brother is an idiot

For some reason, when I attempt to copy and paste things into the description areas of a character, it will not let me. Any Ideas?

Also, I have noticed that you no longer have access to force powers if you are force sensitive, but only if you have the specialization. Why is this?

For the first one, are you sure you're trying to paste into the text box, or the preview box? :) I know that I'm always pasting into the preview and wondering why nothing is happening, then it's doh! wrong place!

Not sure what you mean by the second one. Force powers show up whenever you have a Force rating of 1 or more, either through the FS speciailzations or FaD careers. I do filter Force powers by their FR requirements, though, so if you have a FR of 1, you won't see powers that require FR 2 or 3.

Turns out that I just bought a new computer and I still needed to install an update and that is why I could not cut and paste anything.

As far as force powers, my character's race begins being force sensitive and in old versions of your program it would allow for the buying of force powers, but now it seems that I cannot unless I buy a force career or specialization. I hope this helps for a better understanding of the issue.

On another note, I noticed that you can only juryrig an item once when it does not say you cannot do it multiple times. Is it possible to make it where you can juryrig an item at least twice in the program?

With FaD, I had to add a check to make sure someone was Force sensitive before applying Force talents. Unfortunately, that prevents a species with a free Force Rating talent from taking advantage of it. There's actually a way of adding a Force rating that doesn't require the talent, but the editor doesn't support it.

I'm going to have to look at the recalc code and allow species talents to count, regardless of Force rating. That should fix the problem.

As per RAW (and a developer-answered question), each rank of Jury Rigged must be applied to different items. You can't make multiple Jury Rigged changes to a single item.

So I have a bounty hunter with the gadgeteer spec. Added the Force Sensitive Exile spec, and now anytime I try to modify their talents in the Gadgeteer tree, I get a prompt saying "Specialzation will be removed." If I click, it pops up once more before staying gone. But if I hit yes, the entire gadgteer tree gets removed and replaced with the assassin tree.

If I remove the force sensitive exile spec, everything works fine, so I think something with having multiple specs is messing up my initial career specialization choice and resetting the dropdown box on the career tab when the program recalculates after getting a new talent.

Well, I got home and tried the installation from Google again and it worked. So, not sure what the issue was on my end, but it appears to be gone now.

Loving the updates. Keep up the awesome work :)

So maybe something changed and my brother isn't an idiot??? I refuse to believe this. Let's just keep it between us...

Not yet. I'm guessing it takes them awhile.
