Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey Ogg? Why do the items, armor and gear not have a ® marking like the tables in the core rulebook? It's rarity value doesn't determine if it is a blackmarket item or not. For example:

The book lists a bowcaster as having a rarity of 7, but not a Restricted ® item. Meaning you could buy it from a respectable if up market weapon store.

However the Disruptor pistol, which has a lower rarity of 6 does have a Restricted Item Icon ®.

Personally, I think there should be a flag that you can tick to determine that the item is restricted and only avalible on the black market. It would also then enable more filtering options for "Show Purchasable items only". You could have one saying "Include black market weapons" or even "Black Market/Restricted Items Only"?

Been thinking about that myself, particularly when adding some of the newer toys from Enter the Unknown.

I'm thinking a tag that notes the item as Restricted, or possibly just an entry line with a Yes/No indicator, would be the simplest way to indicate an item is Restricted.

Admittedly, in terms of building a character, the Restricted tag doesn't really have that much of an impact; once a PC acquires a piece of gear in play, all they'd need to do is add it to their character's file.

Adding a Restricted flag is easy enough. But other than using it as a filter (which could also be accomplish with categories), what would it be used for? All I can really think of is to remove the "Black Market" entry on the buy/sell screen, since the price of a restricted item is supposed to already be the black market price, so it wouldn't have to be doubled. Of course, that would probably confuse people, and I would have to explain why the "Black Market" price is removed when buying or selling a black market item :)

So, if all you want to do is filter by restricted items, I could just add a "Restricted" category. Would this suffice? Or am I missing something?

Hello

I have donwloaded and used your character generator, and I find it awesome.

Meanwhile, did you planned to have translation in other languages? I'm french, and even if english is not a problem for me, I kow other people that are not friendly with that,

If needed, I can help to translate, I already participate to translate other application in the past.

Well the point about having the flag, for me at least is so I can look through the list and know what items are restricted without having to look inside my book, which is helpful when I am planning a session and also when I am playing the session since I use the tool while running the session. That way if the players visit a market stall that I hadn't planned and created an item list for, I can read out some items in character as the merchant and not accidentally read out a restricted item they can't get.

Also, it may be useful from a game world aspect. Some places may not allow restricted guns, armor, etc. Like If I was running around with a restricted slicer box in an Imperial Station without a very specific license, would be a baad thing. =) I do have to be careful about that. I would like to see the big R listed on my character sheet otherwise the GM might slap me down. =)

Plus, also from a between game perspective having restricted as a filter may make it easier for people to buy things. Perhaps the GM will say you can buy anything of a rarity 4 or less and is not restricted.

OK, you convinced me :) Restricted items will now have a restricted icon (red circle with white horizontal bar) next to the rarity. You'll also be able to filter on it from equipment, attachments, and vehicles. I'll also add the icon to equipment on the sheets.

Sweet deal!

You are the man!!

Loving the generator. We tend to play several rpgs and rotate around, so it's nice to have one rpg that is easy to make characters in.

I apologize if this has been asked: I've been filling in some information via your wonderful database editor. If you drop an update to the program, will that eliminate my changes? How would I go about using a new version while making sure my changes make the transition?

On another note, you are a wonderful man for making this generator!!! You've done a fantastic job.

Nevermind. I actually did the intelligent thing and read the FAQ. Sorry!

But, again, fantastic editor!!

New release! Let me know how everything works :)

Release 1.1.0.7:
New Data:
  • Added the "Dunelizard" starfighter from "Long Arm of the Hutt" adventure.
  • Added the "YKL-37r Nova Courier" freighter from "Long Arm of the Hutt" adventure.
  • Added "TIE Defender" from "Age of Rebellion". This was unintentionally omitted.
New Imports:
  • Added adversaries and stock vehicles for "Long Arm of the Hutt" adventure.
  • Added adversaries and stock vehicles for "Escape from Mos Shuuta" adventure from the Beginner Game.
New Features and Enhancements:
  • Added custom armor to the adversary editor in GM Tools.
  • Added tracking to vehicles on the encounter sheet. Vehicles now have the same style of tracking as adversaries, with hull trauma, system strain, a place to put damaged components, and critical hits.
  • Also added minion vehicles to encounters. Vehicles used as minions must have the "Single-Pilot Craft" option enabled (see below), and you must have at least one minion adversary group selected for the encounter. Minion vehicles are designated in the Rosters pane by checking the box next to the vehicle and selecting a minion adversary group. Such a group cannot be used in any other roster. On the encounter sheet, a modified version of vehicle tracking is displayed, similar to minion adversaries.
  • Added the "restricted" setting to all equipment, vehicles, and attachments. You can now filter on restricted items when purchasing them. When descriptions are displayed in the dialogs, the restricted icon (red circle with white horizontal bar) will be displayed next to the rarity. On the sheets, each item grid will now also display the restricted icon next to any restricted item.
  • All data has been updated to reflect the new restricted setting for restricted items.
  • Added Rarity to attachments, as well as the restricted setting.
  • Editors have been updated to reflect the new setting(s).
  • Added the "Single-Pilot Craft" option to the vehicle editor. Check this box if the vehicle is a starfighter, speeder, or some other craft that requires a single pilot. Such vehicles can be used as minion vehicles in encounters.
Bug Fixes:
  • Changed the source for the "Driver" specialization to "Enter the Unknown".
  • The I-Class Star Destroyer and the Victory-Class Star Destroyer had mixed and matched portraits and silhouettes. They both now have the proper images.
  • The Gundark adversary in the CRB import directory had its "Meaty Fists" misspelled. This has been corrected. The Gundark was also duplicated in the AoR import directory. It has been removed.
  • The Shortened Barrel attachment had an incorrect HP cost. It now costs 1 HP.
  • The Augmented Spin Barrel attachment had its application limited to the Blaster Rifle and Heavy Blaster Rifle. This has been changed to be usable by any weapon with the "Blaster Rifle" category, which includes several new weapons from recent supplements.
  • Fixed other assorted spelling issues.
  • If you created a new character, added equipment and vehicles to it, then performed an equipment transfer, it would say that the character must be saved, but if you returned to the character pane, the new character wasn't there. The character was saved, but the character list was not being updated. It is now updated properly.

Hey OggDude, I love this program and I admire your dedication. The biggest thing on my wishlist right now: An automated installer.

I love the fact that you put out updates often, but I often skip a few updates because it feels like a chore to merge the files in and everything.

Keep up the awesome work.

I'm looking into it :) There's really no merging required anymore. Just delete the Data directory and copy everything over. All your custom stuff is safe.

Btw Ogg, have you looked into the possibility of being able to use the Tool as a session tool. Basically using the sheets as they were intended but digitally, not printed out?

I would disagree with the installer option (IMO, of course). I like the fact that you can have it sit on a flash drive and plug it into any PC making your "standard" version available to you essentially everywhere you go.

That's a good point--I have the generator on a shared Dropbox folder so anyone in our party can use it if they wish.

Bug report: J-Type Star Skiff's silhouette picture is the wrong way around.

This is brilliant Ogg.

I had an idea about the Intergrated aspect of equipping droids, I added this as an attachment option for Gear, Armour and weapons, with mod options of concealed and spring loaded, which should be self explanatory. This might be something that would be useful in the base program for future releases.

The Scientist track appears to be misaligned... the latter half is inaccessible.

There was a line missing between Respected Scholar and Natural Scholar. Fixed.

how do you plan to internationalize the generator ? would it be possible to custom every word? it would be easier for you to maintain with the update

I couldn't figure out which way was up on that ship :) I flipped it.

For the code, I'd need to use resources for everything. Since I was a bad boy and used string constants rather liberally, it might take awhile to do that :) There's some other issues as well. For instance, ranges are stored as strings, not range band codes. Mods that increase or decrease range expect the string to be in English. I'm going to have to research the best way to go on this.

I'm playing around with ClickOnce as a deployment strategy, but haven't had much success yet. If I do have an installer, I'll also keep the ZIP around for people who prefer it.

So basically, you created a 0-HP cost Droid Integration attachment that works for everything and has various options for how it's integrated? Excellent idea! What options are available in the CRB? Do you have a page #? I haven't looked into integration that much...

Awesome. Dude, I have so much respect for what you've done with this program. There are a lot of interesting challenges to solve!
