Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi, I'm a new player using this generator to build my character.

I ran into an issue with the Armor Insert attachment from Cyphers and Masks. I want to add it to the A/KT Tracker Utility Vest. When I add it as attachment the character's Melee and Ranged Defense is increased by +1, but the Soak value stays unchanged even though "Soak: 1 " is listed on the item.

I tried the inserts on other eligible armor options with the same result. Adding the optional mod to increase soak to +2 adds +1 to the character's soak value. (I use this as a temporary workaround)

This seems to be a bug in version 2.3.4.0, is there a place to properly report it?

Hey @OggDude love the character generator.

I'm pretty new to the hobby, but since I have started using my first Force sensitive character one thing that I have noticed that would be helpful is to have the Force Rating and Current force rating (minus any committed die) on the front page rather than back on page three. Maybe right in that central column on page 1 where soak and defense are listed. It could have the total force rating on the left and then a blank space for the current force rating right next to it. Thats where I have ended up writing it on my printed out character sheet as its much more convenient.

Hey @OggDude

I miight have found another bug, it doesn't seem like 10 enc 0 items are adding up to enc 1, specifically 5 stimpack, 2 emergency repair patches, 2 field rations, and a protective amulet aren't adding a point of enc.

Is there anything that needs doing to continue the development of this Character Generator? Is there anything I could do to assist in its continued improvement?

Can you give me a book and page number for that rule?

Encumbrance values sub-header, last paragraph on the left column, p159 in FnD core

Reads more like a suggestion/case-by-case thing than a hard and fast rule.

Yeah, it doesn't look like a hard, fast rule unfortunately. Could be 10, could be 20, or maybe add a few here and there, etc. I guess I could have it as an option (None, 10:1 or 20:1), something like that, if anyone is interested. If not, I won't bother 🙂

Thanks Stan... it would have taken me a while to find that.

I'm having an issue that happened once before:

A character is simply... gone. When I open the Character Generator, he's no longer listed. When I open the Group in the GM Tools, he's missing from there, as well. The last several times I've opened the app, all changes were on other characters - his wasn't even opened, much less changed. He's still listed as Char9.xml in the Data Folder (AppData>Roaming>SWCharGen>Characters). He just doesn't seem to load with the rest of them for some reason.

This happened several months ago, as well, but with different characters. After a few weeks they simply reappeared just as inexplicably - but not until after I tracked down old sheets and manually re-entered all their information from scratch.

This is the second time this app has done this. I'd rather not deal with all that frustration, again. Any advice?

Fellow players in the groups I’m in and I have encountered this on a small handful of occasions, but have found it to be resolved by just completely closing the software (including the launcher) and reopening.

I've opened/closed the app several times, both before and after clearing the cache. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

I had a similar-sounding problem. The culprit was some gear from RotSep which I had entered in the Data Editor. When the latest version of the program with material from RotSep came out, there was some sort of conflict (I'm not using that as a technical term).

Removing my own versions of the RotSep gear solved my issues. I did need to re-equip the character in question, but that's far less traumatic than re-typing a full page's worth of backstory.

I appreciate the idea and I'm glad it was able to fix your character. However, I did a manual install originally and haven't installed any updates, specifically because I've been afraid the significant amount of information I've entered into a custom data set might be lost and/or cause an error. It's not possible, that I know of, for an update to have caused a conflict, because none have been installed. There were also no changes to this character or items/powers/talents/etc. that are part of his character sheet (that I can think of, anyway).

As yet, I have been unable to get this character to load. Thankfully, it's another week before our next game, but at some point I'm going to have to manually re-enter an entire character - again - and since this seems to be a known problem with the app, I'm willing to try other options.

(EDIT: Update - I regularly export the characters' individual xml files as a backup in case something like this happens. I was able to import the character. In the DataFolder, there's now Char9.xml and Char11.xml for the same character, with the new one showing up in the app. While this temporarily addresses the immediate concern, I'm growing a little wary of continuing to use this app if it's sometimes going to just randomly eat characters. )

I'm trying to use the editor to add some custom species I have discovered while exploring this site. (The creator is a member of this community, and I'd give him due credit, but I have a lousy memory for names.) Anyway, I am currently working a species called an Abednego. It's stat block looks like the following. I figured out how to add the skill rank, but I haven't figure out who to do the Sensory Tendrils so that they will show up at the correct place when creating a character for the species. Is there a tutorial available for us slower users that offers examples to follow?

WT 10+Brawn, ST 10+Willpower
110 XP
1 rank in Knowledge-Xenology
Sensory Tendrils: Remove setback for lighting conditions

As you're entering the species, under Option Choices, click "New." Enter a Choice Name and click "New." Under Option Name, enter "Sensory Tendrils" and enter the condition in the Edit Description box. (For something like the effect listed above, since it only applies under specific conditions, just the description will do.)

I highly recommend the web install. His installs never touch user created data. So while it might not see it itnis always there.

How would I go about changing to the web install without losing any of my game data? As mentioned, I've exported the characters as separate xml files, but what do I need to do to keep all my hand-entered information: characters, careers, specs, talents, items, vehicles, etc.? I assume I'll want to make copies of a file(s), uninstall, reinstall using web install, and paste the file(s) into the new data folder? Do I just copy/paste the "DataCustom" folder wholesale?

I apologize if these are simple questions, but I have minimal programming knowledge and don't know what exactly needs to be done. I'm happy to go with the web install to keep things updated if that's recommended, but I absolutely do not want to have to re-do all the work I've already put in. I'm happy to take the process private so as not to clog the thread with a how-to conversation.

Uninstall what you have installed, then install the web install version from the link on the “about” tab of OggDude’s profile. All of your custom data and characters are stored in a different location than the program and it’s core data. If you’re concerned about loss, you can copy all of the contents from there, accessed by clicking the “data folder” button on the launcher screen.

Uninstalled. Clicked the link. Immediately encountered an error.

Clicking the url leads to another error.

" 500 Internal Server Error

((EDIT: The "
To install via the web, download and run the setup executable from here" link in the Documentation section leads to a 404 error. Am I doing something wrong?))

It is because where he has the files is simetimes abused by hackers

Hey @OggDude .

It seems like there might be a bug with the armor inserts setting soak value to 1 and then adding that to a character's calculated soak. I tried to do it with the cargo clothing and while the soak and defense updated correctly on the listed item stats, the soak did not get added to my character soak. This was his only piece of armor/clothing btw.

I made a temporary fix by copying the item attachment and making an alternative for just 0 soak armors where instead of setting soak to 1, it increases soak by one and that solved the issue. Not sure what might be causing the root problem though.

I am on the auto updated version.

If it's not too hard to put it in there as an option, some Gm's may use it.

I know I certainly would.

Oggdude should start a patreon so he can invest in a codesign certificate. This will prevent the OS from complaining about the installer.

Strike and reverse that. That could be seen as profiting from FFG and enters a very dark place legally speaking.
