Another Character Generator

It’s pointed to the right one. I’ve even tried moving the data and pointing it to that new location, with no joy. I’ve changed it back to the default location and put the data there with no luck, either.

Is everything in DataCustom, or do you have it in a data set? Or a mixture of both?

In DataCustom. No extra data sets.

Could be a Windows permission problem. Try running the generator as an Administrator and see if the problem goes away.

I think I found the culprit (at least for me)!

Running as admin didn't work (at all...it wouldn't open...threw the "Do you want this app to make changes to your system?" message, but didn't open after clicking "yes"), played around with the compatibility troubleshooter, and thought that might be it, because it seemed to make an impact, but only when I'd change the data location to the local drive from the network drive.

Then, thinking of permissions, I took a look at the DataCustom folder itself. And, while the files within it were all fine and not set to read-only when I checked earlier, the advanced sharing options for the folder were only marked as anyone being able to read. I changed them to Full Control, reopened the software, and the data was visible. So, I just didn't look deep enough after @Stan Fresh 's suggestion.

Looks like I might have a little bit of data reconstruction to do when it comes to some of the descriptions, but I should have a backup somewhere to help speed that up.

Thanks to you and Stan for helping point me in the right direction.

Aaaaand...I spoke too soon.

I reentered some of the descriptions, saved, closed, reopened...and the descriptions were gone again. Checking the xml files, the descriptions are there.

Still...it's progress...I've at least gotten the "invisible" items back. Now I just need to figure out what's up with the descriptions.

It sounds to me like you have more than one data set. I have experienced the same and it had to do with multiple data sets. also double check you have the user data checked off in the options.

As mentioned several times, I have no other data sets. At all.

User Data is selected as a source, but I have no custom items flagged with User Data as their source; it’s all been given the appropriate sourcebook title as a source, or been assigned an appropriate source name. It wouldn’t apply to some of the missing descriptions, at any rate. After reentering about a dozen descriptions and having them disappear (all of which are from FFG sources), I narrowed my efforts to the YT-2400 for testing purposes.

Is it possible you're making some mistake in the data entry process? I have done only very, very little in that regard, and usually had to fiddle around to get things right. Maybe post a screenshot or two of your process?

(sorry if that comes over as annoyingly basic, totally not my intent to frustrate you; sometimes people overlook a basic/early mistake or their assumptions betray them, happens to everyone)

When you add new items it adds them toncustom data. Not to the base.

Also when you add items you need to click save. Then you need to close then reopen the character gen.

Well aware. Been using it for years. As I’ve noted, the DataCustom xml files show the updates. They are not in a separate data set, but in the primary DataCustom folder (or the appropriate subfolders). After saving, closing, and reopening, the changes - present in the xml files - are no longer reflected in the software.

As you've been doing this for awhile... when did this problem start? Do you remember doing anything (installing new software, changing Windows versions, etc) around the same time? If it used to work, then something's changed. I have both the default (DataCustom) custom data, as well as different datasets, and they all play nicely with one another.

It started long enough ago that I don't remember. Just as I wouldn't expect you to dig through all 445(!! holy frak) pages looking for my first post about it, I find that a daunting task, too. I've always had Windows 10 on any computers that I've used (and experienced the issue with). It is or has been present on my desktop, previous laptop, current laptop, wife's laptop, son's old laptop, and his current one.

A couple of weeks ago, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, but there was no change. During that same troubleshooting session, I noticed that, even after uninstalling and reinstalling, if I'd used the source filter on before the uninstall, that was still present after the reinstall. (Ex: If I'd filtered by Lead by Example, after uninstall/reinstall, it was still filtered by Lead by Example.) That made me think that there might be something wonky in the registry key for the software, but I couldn't find anything that was obviously the software's registry key, so I didn't mess with that. If I could, I would have uninstalled, removed the registry key, then reinstalled for a truly scratch installation.

The only next thing that I can think of to test would be to export all of my custom data into data sets, move the files in the network folder to a thumb drive, then totally nuke that folder, uninstall, reinstall, create a new folder, and start adding data back incrementally to see when the issue starts occurring.

Look in this directory: C:\Users\<Windows Login>\AppData\Roaming\SWCharGen

There's a file in there called Settings.xml. Try removing it or renaming it and see if things improve. If your data folder is somewhere other than the default, you'll need to choose it again. But... before doing that, try copying your custom data into the default directory and see if things improve. If they do, then there's probably some sort of a permission or sharing issue.

Edit: Make that the default DataCustom directory 🙂

I knew whatcha meant. 😁

I think I've tried nuking the settings.xml file before, but tried it again, with no luck.

Trying the data from the default location didn't either.

I'm currently starting the copy process to data sets for each book, so I can start adding them back in one-by-one to see if the problem begins immediately or at a certain point.

Failing that, I think the only option left is to wipe it all and rebuild my custom data from the ground up and see how that fares. 😳

OK...thinking I might just have to suck it up and rebuild the descriptions.

  • Pointed the software to a new folder, so all data was empty and fresh.
  • Copied and pasted the description for my test baseline (the YT-2400), saved, closed, and reopened. Description was there.
  • Closed, copied and pasted the entire xml file of another that I know the description disappeared for (YT-1300), reopened. Description was there.
  • Closed, copied all vehicle xml files into the new Vehicles folder, reopened, and several were missing descriptions. Checked the xml file for one that I know had been previously edited (YT-2000), and the xml file had the description, while the software didn't display it.

Looks like a decent chunk of the holiday weekend may be spent copying and pasting descriptions from the old xml files into the Data Editor to create new ones, then try introducing the files for ships that I've added slowly to see if they take.

So some vehicles are displaying descriptions, while some are not. This makes sense because each vehicle is a separate xml file. For something like weapons, which are all in a single file, it would make sense for NONE of them to be displayed.

As for why... there has to be something wrong with the file. For instance, the YT-2000 has to have a problem with it. What you can do is send me a few vehicle files that you know don't work and I'll see if I can find the issue.

I can do that a little later. (About to log in to work and be in a series of boring video meetings. Yay?) While I appreciate the help, I’m afraid I’ll be sending you on a wild goose chase. All three of those were ones that the description disappeared on. The YT-2400 description reappeared when I reentered the description with no others present; brand new XML file. The YT-1300 reappeared after pasting the same XML file that was in use, complete with description, when the description hadn’t been showing up, but now was one of only two xml files. (I hope that made sense.) The YT-2000’s description remained unreadable after pulling all of the old xml files into the new folder.

Is it possible that, after reaching X number of xml files (for some reason, seemingly limited to vehicles) that the software just “stops reading” them? It seems unlikely, because even after pulling all of the others over and the 2000 being unread, the 2400 (brand new xml file) and the 1300 (old xml file) still displayed their descriptions. (Mostly just thinking out loud here.)

I’ll pull a few later to send. Definitely those three. I didn’t look last night; since being a new folder, I didn’t think to check/change sharing permissions, so I’ll see how - for example - the Starships and Speeders content looks. (It was the most obvious of examples of entire vehicles not showing up at all.) Will those three do?

Thanks for your assistance.

While I’m here, looking back, I’ve been a bit snippy in some of my responses to some people on the subject. Working in a support call center I should know better than to snap at someone just trying to help - reconfirming information and making sure simple stuff hasn’t been overlooked is part of the gig. I didn’t quite go full “custmonster,” but I was on the path. My apologies.

I have a PC who is using the Jedi Career from Rise of the Separatists and had the Padawan Specialization -as well as Niman Disciple out-of-career. I had created the Career and its Specializations in the Data Editor and everything was fine. I changed the character's name and after saving and reopening, it has changed his career to Smuggler and completely messed up his XP. He still had Niman Disciple listed and all the purchased talents look correct. I used Remove to take him out of the Characters list, cleared the cache, and imported a saved xml of that character (I've been backing them up after every session in case something like this happened), but even when I import the character it turns him into a Smuggler. If I go to Career I appear to be able to manually change his Career back to Jedi, but his XP is all janky and I didn't memorize the order he bought everything in - so the only option I see for fixing this is to literally delete the character entirely and use a printed sheet to re-enter everything by hand.

(EDIT: All of his purchased Force Powers have also been removed. It looks like his new unspent XP is about right for all the missing Talents and Force Powers, but I wouldn't know unless I pull out an old sheet and redo it - at which point I might as well just re-enter the sheet).

(ANOTHER EDIT: Another character's options inexplicably changed so that the GM Grants turned off. I turned it back on and everything looks fine, but wtf.)

This is infuriating and I would happily try any advised action.

(Also edited for spelling)

I have added a Dataset to my generator and it caused characters to disappear. I had luckily exported them before I had done it. When I try to import the character now, a error box pops up and the character tab freezes. Below is the error I get.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

I have added a Dataset to my generator and it caused characters to disappear. I had luckily exported them before I had done it. When I try to import the character now, a error box pops up and the character tab freezes. Below is the error I get.

Would you mind editing that with the error in a spoiler tag to avoid the wall o’ text? Thanks!

Not sure how to do that. I did it as a quote so it could be open and closed.

Unfortunately, quotes are “open” by default on this platform, while spoilers default to “closed.” Just makes it a little easier on those of us to whom error logs are Greek, given their length. 😁

For a spoiler tag, type (spoiler)at the beginning and (/spoiler) at the end, but replace the parentheses with brackets [].

Hey There!

I got a question. How do you handle the Under-Barrel Flame Projector in the Character generator.

The Attachment only says in CG "Adds a flame projector to the weapon", but it is written that characteristics are [Damage 10, Crit 2, Burn 5, Blast 2] in the books.

Meanwhile, Flame Projector weapon has [Damage 8, Crit 2, Burn 3, Blast 8] in the same books.

Do I miss something or should I add a Under-barrel Flame projector in the weapons of the Character generator?
