Another Character Generator

So, I updated the Morality table in groups to use the CRB, rather than the beta. I'm guessing not a lot of people use the group feature from GM Tools, or this would have come up sooner. If you're a GM, and you already have all your players' characters in the generator, it's probably worth it to add a group for them, if for nothing else than to print out the group sheet. It's very useful during play, as it has obligation, duty, and morality rolls, plus common skills, group equipment, etc.

Anyway, here's what Morality looks like now:

I have used it in the past, but this is the first time I am really pushing the narrative subsystems. Your group creator makes it very convenient, so thank you!

So the image you shared looks like how I thought this part of the GM Tool would look, but I must be doing something wrong. I've added all the PCs into a group. It shows their total Duty on the Description tab, but it doesn't actually bring in any of their Duties in from their character sheets. Is it supposed to? Or do you have to add each with the "New" button in the Obligation/Duty tab? Is it because in my game I'm letting them use Obligation, Duty, and Morality in tandem? Does that break the Group tool?

When you go to print, it shows a list of everyone in your group. You need to select the members that you want in your group sheet, as not everyone in the group is necessarily at every game session. You can select them individually by checking the box next to them, or click the "Select All" button. Also, check all the options you want on the sheet. The obligation, duty/contribution, and morality boxes should all be checked.

You might also want to check the "Show Member Detail" button if you want to see a summary of each selected character, including stats and ranked/common skills.

The Obligation/Duty tab is for group obligation and duty; that is, obligation and duty assigned to the group as a whole, rather than to individual PCs. The obligation and duty displayed on the sheet will be a combination of individual and group duty.

Hahahahaha...

So, it apparently also helps to scroll down to the next page of the pdf. *facepalm* I feel so dumb.

I'm sure you've answered most of these questions before. I appreciate the patience.

Just checking but what version are we up to as of today?

I have a few questions about the OggDude character generator.
First: I noticed this was using the .NET libraries. Purely out of curiosity, is this programed in C# or VB?

Secondly, the Users Manual wasn't clear enough on how to select which Data Set the Character Generator is using. I have created a custom data set called "Filled In" and I would like to use it as my Data Set on the Character Generator and GM Tools.

If you have already answered these in the Users Manual or FAQ and I missed it then I apologize.

Thank you,
Craftidore

v. 2.3.4.0

Done.

(Assuming that you meant the .xml file for the character in question.)

I replied in email. Basically, your character had two user-defined specializations and one of them was no longer available. It's supposed to handle this without crashing, but there was a bug (so, yay, another bug fixed).

Happy to help with (accidental) bug finding! :)

@OggDude

Typo found: in the RotSep material, the Mk II EMP grenade's description lists it incorrectly as the AP-M1 Armor Piercing Grenade.

I found old video on youtube of old version of this program. It has decribtion text of every characterstic or talent.

But in new version I have only "see page X of roolbok X for more info".

So, the decribtions was removed in new versions because of copyright or somewhat?

As far as I know, the full descriptions have always been absent for that very reason - to avoid a cease and desist for copyright infringement.

But, then, as now, the Data Editor feature allows you to enter descriptions from the books that you own (or to create custom items and descriptions). The creator of that video most likely entered the information in themselves.

So I have added another medal/ribbon to the reward section in the data editor. When I add them to a character, close the program and then get back in, the character disappears and I lose everything. Any ideas?

I'd need to see the reward you added.

I may have found a bug. When taking the Adaptable feature in the generator under the Padawan Tree, it seems to grant 3 Force Rating to the character, despite the talent not actually granting that effect.

Nevermind, I forgot that a friend had added in a bunch of stuff not in your official version yet that was shared with me, and after looking, they'd accidentally marked it to add 3 FR.

realized there wasn't a bug

I'm getting the "The application is improperly formatted" error. I see it was a problem for a lot of people a while back and I read through those posts, but didn't see a viable fix. What do I do?

I disconnected from the internet and it loaded, but that is 100% not a viable long-term solution.

This morning, I tried an uninstall/reinstall to see if it would resolve the issue of the random invisible custom data. It did make all of the custom items (vehicles, in particular) show back up, but wouldn't read a bunch of the descriptions I've entered in. The descriptions are there in the xml files, but don't carry through to the software. Tried uninstalling the web install version and switching to manual install and, despite being in a different location, it was still recognizing the last "source" filter I'd applied with the web install (and, the "invisible" information was still not being read). Removed the manual install and reinstalled the web install, and random custom items were missing again.

I'd like to try reinstalling completely fresh, but I can't seem to find anything for the software in the registry editor. What does it write to in the registry so I can clear those items and restart fresh and clean?

Thanks!

Not to be a broken record about this...

I was figuring it was just something on my end, but in casual conversation with my GM over the weekend, he mentioned that he, too, has custom data (like me, usually vehicles) become randomly invisible. Neither of us have any additional data sets. Just wondering if @OggDude or anyone else had any thoughts on the matter. Sure, especially if it's an entirely custom ship, it's possible to just toss a copy of the xml file into the app's own data folder, but it'd be nice not to have to use that workaround (especially for official release items that I've added, and you'll add in, as well).

We are gonna need more info.

Not any more info to add that I haven't said in that post or previously:

Random custom data - some descriptions, mostly (but not entirely) confined to vehicles - is entered, saved, the xml files are present and/or reflect the custom data, but do not appear in the Character Generator app and disappear from the Data Editor app when it's reopened. No additional data sets are present in the DataCustom folder to conflict with this data and cause the software to ignore it.

Examples:

  • I'm looking in the Data Editor right now, and the descriptions for all of the vehicles from Rise of the Separatists are at the default page reference and not marked as modified ("DescOnly"), while the xml files for those ships in DataCustom show the proper descriptions.
  • None of the new vehicles from Starships and Speeders (all of which I've added) are visible.

Clear the cache seenif that fixes it.

Also verify that your data folder is what you think it is. It might not be finding anything because it's in another directory.

It’s pointed to the right one. I’ve even tried moving the data and pointing it to that new location, with no joy. I’ve changed it back to the default location and put the data there with no luck, either.

Is it possible that some of the data files are set to read-only? Does the data editor throw up an error message if it can't save changed data due to file restrictions?

Unlikely, because the Data Editor created and/or edited the files. Just in case, I just checked one of the “invisible” files, and it is not read-only.
