Hello Rozial

Nice work, but one question : if that's allowed, how can I download this into the Generator ? I only have access to images of ships and their characteristics

Thx

You can download the images but as for adding them to the generator it takes manually entering them through the data editor but you can copy the stats from there if you want. I've also since added more vehicles if you look on the site. It has over 50 vehicles, I believe, for the Old Rpublic.

I'm having a problem trying to use the new 2.3 build. When I tried manually installing it I could start it but the character generator would only show the small box in the middle for a while before closing and never bringing up the full generator. I then tried web install from Ogg's profile page and the installer says it can't install because it already exists on my dropbox. I deleted everything from my drop box, completely emptied it, but I'm still getting the same error message when trying the web install.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26990628/deploy/SWCharGen/SWCharGenLauncher.application

I used the web install and have the same problem. I found if I load it as Administrator and run in combatibility mode it works but sometimes I can’t see all my characters and have to close and reload to access my characters

I started suddenly having this problem yesterday, when I try to use my Generator it comes up with:

Unhandled exception has occurred inyour application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

The type initializer for 'SWCharGen.CacheList'2' threw an exception.

I have tried to continue and the Generator will appear with all numbers showing as 5s, Characteristics actually are 55, but the is no other information available, all texts are blank.

? HELP PLEASE!!

So far, he’s seemed pretty well settled on keeping it closed for the reasons mentioned. But, no...no reason you shouldn’t state your case. Just like there’s no reason not to point out his existing responses to the request. Fair enough for both sides, right?

Fair enough points. The thread is pretty dense, and sifting through to find a small handful of posts can be an undertaking. (I know this from experience, looking for any one of about four posts with some info I was looking for last weekend.)

The vibe I get is that he’s not inclined to change his mind on the issue. Not because he’s “embarrassed” of the old, bashed together code as one person suggested. But because he knows what shortcuts and happy accidents are in that code making him best equipped to build on it, and even the best of intentions in correcting those things could bring down the whole house of cards.

Honest question: If one of the factors of the open source crowd not working on a new tool is holding out hope that he’ll open it, and he’s pretty consistently declined the request, aren’t they getting in their own way in that respect?

Anyone just thought it might be simply, he was told as long as you don't open source it we won't shut it down by FFG. Also you open source it you could invite Disney to take notice and then you have no character generator. If you read the early days of this generator he actually mentions the changes he had to make to not get it shut down, that doesn't mean there weren't other non disclosed concessions made too. But maybe I watch to many conspiracy films lol. But on a real note anyone into 3d printing will know disney has stopped thingiverse from hosting any fan created star wars content for downloading and printing.

It's been a while since I browsed through (been fighting with my printer for quite a while), but last time I did, I noticed there seemed to be less there.

Back in the OCR/RCR days of WotC's tenure with the license, an enterprising chap by the handle of Balrog created a stand-alone character generator program that was a godsend with regards to creating and maintaining characters. Unfortunately, it was set up in such a way that it made needing the books unnecessary, and eventually he got a cease & desist from WotC, who had been informed by LucasArts that either the program gets shut down or there would be "consequences." Balrog being a stand-up fellow stopped sharing the program on public message boards; I'm sure it was still being shared and maintained privately by folks who'd installed a copy before the C&D, but that was out of his hands.

So yeah, OggDude's concern about having this program shut down by FFG and/or Lucasfilm are warranted, and was something I mentioned to him the thread that he'd have to be careful about what was included in the program to lessen the chance of him getting a C&D order. FFG seems a bit more lenient than WotC was, seeing as how there's not only this program but at least one active thread where copies of the specialization talent trees that include the basic rules of all the talents are being shared for free.

I think the reason why FFG isnt issuing any C&D orders even from lucasfilm is that this generator is used by possibly thousands of FFG gamers using the star wars system, its free, donations are useful if you want t odonate, and to FFG its an asset that apparently has driven many people to using their system easier and faster. I forget the website, but its an international gaming group using this generator. Its how I first found out about it actually

Balrog's generator also had a very large fanbase of users (even having its own thread on the WotC forums at one point), and he didn't even ask for donations much less receive them, and he still ultimately got shut down by WotC once LucasArts took notice of the program. JD Wiker (who was in charge of the Star Wars RPG prior to his being let go) was even going to pitch to his bosses that they see about contacting Balrog to make his program an official WotC product and work out some sort of deal with LucasArts that wouldn't require an entirely separate license, but he was let go before that meeting could take place. So WotC was aware of Balrog's program, knew how much the community appreciated it, and yet it still got shut down for treading too much into LucasArts' domain.

What's likely saving OggDude's bacon is that his version still requires folks to purchase the books to get all the crunchy details, such as what the various talents, Signature Abilities, and Force powers do, as well as any special rules regarding new equipment that's not reflected directly in the stat block. Also probably helping him avoid a C&D is that LucasArts (which could be very protective of it's domain of Star Wars electronic media) has since been reduced to an oversight portion of Lucasfilm in the wake of the Disney purchase rather than a game publisher in its own right, and EA (who currently has the license for SW electronic media) probably isn't worried about the generator since it doesn't impact their video game revenue stream.

OggDude's is definitely generating business for FFG. When I was introduced to the game, I was just going to use my GM's books. I found this app, though, and it really fueled my interest in the game, to the point where I couldn't wait to borrow books, so started buying all of them for my own. OggDudes is great so that I don't have to do character sheets manually.

For starting characters I recommend that if you have players using this tool that you make sure they are using the filters. The special equipment in the generator appears much like the Core Book Equipment and it's rarity is bypassed in Character Creation so it's just a grab bag of stuff they should probably be looking for in-game and using the rarity system.

Or...if it's available in-universe, it's fair game (if they've got the credits) but - like everything else - subject to GM override.

Yeah thank you that's a good point, GM needs to keep an eye on that stuff and make purposeful decisions there in my opinion. The game has a lot of great axes of progression and the items are one such axis.

Sure absolutely. I'm not disagreeing with people sharing them, but the reasoning being shared. I don't think the reasons given are sufficient to not open source it given all the potential upsides.

This is the reasoning I've disagreed with. It's not really enough, all the cards would still be in his hands; he can pick and choose what goes in. Better yet maybe he can get help cleaning it up if it's really that bad off.

Admittedly there's a level of "I'm new to this debate and haven't seen him say no / disagree with my reasoning." That said, I think that's the minor factor. It's more the amount of work (even ignoring data) combined with it largely working as-is.

As an aside, here's another bug: When I go to add a special ability and special dice, every adjustment I make resets the dice type selector back to "Add Boost".

I did it rather grudgingly because I didn't think you were supposed to do it., but this rather makes me challenging.

Printer problems are an OS issue

I'v looked trough the guide and the data editor and i was wondering if there was a way to add our own crafting template, especially for cybernetics, where the book encourages the GM to create his own.

As far as I can tell, as far as making your own templates goes, from my own searches, the answer is "You Can't."

However, you can create your own cybernetics. Here's a step-by-step guide how. If you already know, feel free to not read the rest of this comment.

Open up the Data Editor, click on "Gear," and then "Add".

Then next to "Type", there's a dropdown menu. Select Cybernetics.

From there, make up the name and stuff, typing it into the appropriate field.

Once that's done, go to "Built in Mods," and select New. Give the item the properties you want. (One property per time you click New). Once done, click "Add" until you're back at the main screen. Click Save. Repeat as many times as you want.

I tried to create an Inquisitor using the GM Tools, but the program crashed when i clicked the button. Can anyone help out a fellow GM? Tried it in German first, then switched to English, without any success.

The error message is partly German, so sorry for that, but the juicy bits should still be legible.

i might be late in posting this, but i just found it. I was wondering why my program was never updating. I've been stuck at 2.2.0

Apparently 2.3.0 is available here

Found an issue tied to tinkerer, if you have it applied to a crafted object, and that object has an "Integral Attachment" through the crafting process, then if the tinkerer specialization is removed as a talent, it'll wipe all of those integral attachments when it removes the tinkerer HP. Doesn't seem to matter if all of the HP are used or not on the item when tinkerer gets unchecked.

I've also noticed that when making a crafted object, you can end up with a level 0 schematic for that template, which if you try later to modify you'll throw an exception as it can't be a level 0 schematic. "Value of '0' is not valid for 'Value'. 'Value' should be between 'Minimum' and 'Maximum'. Parameter name: Value" at SWCharGen.frmAddSchematic.OnLoad(EventArgs e)

Looks to be the "Create or Modify Schematic" form.

Yes, you can, but you'll need to modify the actual xml files, I don't believe its supported through the data editor. I've tossed a couple templates in for a game from a while back.
In the CraftTemplates.xml you'll need the <CraftTemplates xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"></CraftTemplates> tag to wrap the individual <CraftTemplate></CraftTemplate> block. You can get an example block from one of the existing templates the program's data folder. You'll need to put the new template in your Portable Data>DataCustom>DataSet folder, otherwise it'll go away when you update your version.

I'm probably just missing it, but is there a place to enter a new quality?

Haven't found it myself yet

Are folks still having problems with the 2.3.0 version?

I was getting ready to download (I think I'm still using 1.7!) but want to make sure it's working clean.
