Another Character Generator

So I added two powers, one an original creation and the other is Farsight. I made an error in the latter, so most of the boxes are unfilled (and I didn't notice). So that makes sense.

The problem with Farsight may be in the editor? Most of the powers is a 4x5 tree, while Farsight is only a 4x4, so I left the entire bottom row on the editor blank. Could that be causing the problem?

I figured that one might be hard to implement, I have no problem with common-sense rules.

(Ah, I see the problem; we were using a self-made version of 'MMTM' and I've now corrected this to your version! Thanks Ogg!)

My general philosophy going into this was that it should, obviously, follow the rules :) but I also wanted it to be flexible enough to allow people to do things that aren't strictly by the rules, but are only disallowed because they may not have enough of something. Mechanics, however, should always be followed. So, you can add more stuff to your character than your XP allows and it doesn't balk. However, you'll still see the XP deficit at the top. You can also add more characteristic points than your starting XP allows no problem. It will, however, tell you that you're over the limit. Same for the cybernetics limit; you'll see you're over, but it won't yell at you. You can even take extra goodies from all three of the unique mechanics of the three books (obligation, duty, and morality), even though, strictly speaking, it should only be from one. This is supposed to be a tool to help people with the game. It's not designed to be your mom :)

So, you have the exact right idea: common sense! That and a GM that will let you know what you can and can't get away with :)

I ran into an error trying to update, and tried to uninstall for a fresh slate, but ran into the same error. Any ideas would be outstanding! Disk space isn't an issue, I have 20+ GB available.

Any number of things could cause that. It's not actually a problem with the app, it's an issue with launching it. You could have an issue with your hard drive, you could have a permissions problem, or you could have a bad install. I would suggest uninstalling the app and reinstalling it again and see if it clears up the problem.

Strange thing: after updating to 1.7.0 the Character Generator does not show any of my characters. My data is stored in a custom directory, so this is unexpected.

The Data Editor correctly shows my custom DataSet, so I assume I have things setup correctly.

I tried exporting all my characters using 1.6.3 and then importing into 1.7.0 but I get the error: "Not a valid character".

Any help would be welcome.

Clear the cache from the launcher. As I said before, it should do this automatically and I don't know why it's not.

Heal/Harm is also a 4-row power. This was an issue before with this, but it was fixed awhile back. Try editing the power with the current Data Editor and make sure the bottom row shows "No Ability" and that there aren't any lines connecting to any node in the bottom row. If nothing else, re-save the power, since I added code to remove rows that aren't there.

I was using 4.0 which worked with SWCharGen 1.6.3.

I updated to .NET 4.6.1 and everything works fine now!

Hmmm... that is very strange.

Before upgrading .NET it looked to me like SWCharGen could not read any character XML files at all.
I tried a clean installation and even the new characters I created were not loaded. And export/import did not work either.
Anyway, I am glad that it is working with NET 4.6.1, but if you are using 4.0, then I would not recommend others to upgrade unless they seen a similar effect.

I had a customized data set for 1.6 (Talents, Sig Abilities, and Force Powers). I installed 1.7 and did the clear cache as above and the data was loaded properly. Then I went in to the data editor and added data for talents and Sig abilities for Special Modifications. When I went back into the CG, the data is not showing and I cannot import it I, smartly made an archive copy prior to this.

Selecting <Remove> on the Motivation (Specific) tab resulted in an Unhandled Exception: Index was outside the bounds of the array.

EDIT: You can probably glean this from the exception text, but neither continuing nor closing will delete the item; however, modifying the item, removing the item, and then saving does.

Great app, Ogg! Just have one bug of a sort to report.

When the 1.7 update dropped, the first thing I did was add all of the info from Special Modifications into my dataset. This worked mostly as expected, with one exception: Talents. I'm not sure if this has to do with any talent or just the Special Mods ones, but it seems that when I add info from even one of the Special Mods talents it cuts my Talents xml file off early, dropping it from a 1.1MB file down to a 40KB one. It seemed to cut off partway through the information for the Indistinguishable talent.

EDIT: The end result of this is that it doesn't load any of the descriptions for the talents, since the file doesn't end properly. It seems similar to the issue that Nytwyng reported, though his seemed to only cut off on the closing tag, whereas mine chopped off a good portion of the file. Thankfully I had a backup of the pre-1.7 file to put back in place.

To go along with my previous post, I created a specific Creed motivation in a custom dataset, linking it to the parent category, In the parent <Motivations> tab I selected the specific motivation. However, it does not appear in the character generator.

I had a customized data set for 1.6 (Talents, Sig Abilities, and Force Powers). I installed 1.7 and did the clear cache as above and the data was loaded properly. Selecting <Remove> on the Motivation (Specific) tab resulted in an Unhandled Exception: Index was outside the bounds of the array.

EDIT: You can probably glean this from the exception text, but neither continuing nor closing will delete the item; however, modifying the item, removing the item, and then saving does.

See if you can replicate it and then tell me the steps. It worked fine for me, so there's something else going on.

I have done that and the old data was gone as well, and I keep on getting "This Zip does not contain any SW data" when I try and restore or import the archived file

Until I get the next bug fix release out, don't customize any of your data. There's a problem that might cause it truncate files.

Meep, and here was me going to add those talent descriptions, oh well!

Any eta on the bug fix, I know it hast been long but it is kinda a big issue, heh.

Bug Fix Release 1.7.0.?
  • Fixed misspelling in the Optimized Energy Cell attachment.
  • When determining defense ratings for a character, some sources of weapon defense would be applied twice, or possibly three times, depending. This will no longer happen.
  • Fixed, and simplified, logic in the routine that totals the counts of item descriptors for weapons.
  • In the Edit Reports dialog, some invalid properties were listed in the property list of step 2. Now, only proper base properties of the item will be listed.
  • In the Edit Reports dialog, the Prev button would sometimes be enabled even if you couldn't leave the step (if something in the step wasn't valid, for instance). Now, the Prev button will be disabled in this situation.
  • There was an error in the efficiency routines for custom data that would cause saved XML files to be truncated. This will no longer occur.
  • Signature Vehicle mods to custom or new talents weren't being saved properly. They will now be saved.

OggDude, the reporting feature is awesome. I would love to see an export as feature. If I could get the results in a csv, I could really do some interesting things with it.

And when I do bug fixes, I normally only change the release on the launcher because I'm lazy and it's a nuisance. This might change with the next actual release, because I'll get to get rid of my old-style resource files that I was forced to use because of the WebBrowser control. When you use old resources, you need to include a "version" resource, which basically means I have to change version numbers four times for each project. Hence, my laziness in upping the version when doing bug fix releases.
