Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Sorry if this has been asked before, but in a 305 page thread...I guess I'm kinda' lazy. So, anyway, I made me a baddie for my last session using the GM tools. A 900 XP Force Witch! I then made the stat black into a file and printed it it out. I know I'm old, but I couldn't read a thing on there! Everything was so tiny! I didn't really want to make her in the PC builder, but I guess I could have. does any one have any suggestions on how to better layout/print out the BBEGs from the GM tools? Thanks.

There's a "Text Size" combo box on the statblock dialog. Just set the text to something larger. With really complex adversaries, the block can get quite long.

I do have it set extra large. I guess it when it goes into the PNG file, then prints. It prints out the whole block on one sheet paper in a column that is about an inch and 1/4 wide. leaving the majority of the paper blank...

I don't know if something I'm doing wrong, or if it's just the way it is. But there is no point in trying to print these out. I don't know how to make it larger and print on multiple sheets if I needed to.

Try copying and pasting it into a Word document. Being an image, you can resize on the page as needed.

I havent had to mess around with this, maybe i will later, but can you go into print-preview and change the options? so instead of "fit to page" manually resize it? and then print it in pieces (or hope it prints in 2 pieces itself)

Question as to the best way to handle something:

I've currently got a Starhawk speeder bike and a little repulsorlift pallet that can hold 50 encumbrance. The idea is the bike can tow the pallet behind with its rear-mounted tractor beam. I'm thinking the best way to handle this would be to make an item with 0 weight that gives 50 encumbrance capacity and equip it to the bike, but I'm not sure it works that way. I could also see making a separate vehicle for the pallet, but considering how it lacks any sort of self-mobilization, that would seem pretty overboard. Any suggestions?

Edit: Maybe best to make a custom vehicle attachment that doesn't require any hardpoints?

Edit 2: Tried to make an attachment, found that I can't add more than 10 encumbrance. Also unsure of the difference between adding encumbrance threshold & adding encumbrance capacity.

An attachment is the right way to go. Have it cost 0 HP, but maybe limit the usable vehicles in some reasonable way. You could limit it to the "Land Vehicle" category, for instance, since a star destroyer towing a palette with one of it's heavy tractor beams is a bit silly, but whatever fits your concept is fine.

I limited count to 10 so nobody would go hog-wild with mods. You can, however, edit the XML yourself and change it to anything you want. I'll change the cap to something larger.

For vehicle attachments, you'll want to use the Encumbrance Capacity mod, not the threshold mod. The threshold mod shouldn't really show up, but item descriptors can only have one "type", and if typeless, they show up for everything. Since the threshold mod can be used for weapons, armor, and gear, I made it typeless. I'll fix it some day :)

Thanks, that works great. I appreciate the quick response!

If the issue is that it's too long, then set the text to something smaller. That'll cinch it up a bit so it takes up less vertical space.

One thing that I do with Force-using adversaries is I forego using Force powers altogether and Just add a single Special Ability with a description of the Force power including any upgrades. For instance, say you want to give the adversary Move basic, 2 Magnitude upgrades, 1 Strength upgrade, and 1 Range upgrade. Just create a single Special Ability that says "Force Move: <Adversary> can move up to two objects of silhouette 1 up to medium range.", something like that. It'll save a bunch of space.

OggDude, just want to say thanks for doing this and supporting this software.

In my experience as a gamer over decades, often someone does something cool, ad then years later you see a link, and it's a dead link, and there's no more support.

Last night, I set up to run a EotE game here in Thailand (where I am essentially one of maybe 3 Gms in Northern Thailand, and the others are running D&D.)

My group is 3 new to gaming, one guy has played D&D 3.5 for three sessions, and one guy from Bavaria, who has played lots of Die Schwarze Auge, and some Cyberpunk for about 20 years.

That's the extent of their experience. so your Character generator is great. We sat down, they narratively described to me what they wanted, and i went home and typed it up and worked out their PCs for the game monday night using your version 1.0.0.12. I figured it was old software. But no, there's a 306 page forums thread. so thanks for keeping this support going. I got the new 110 Mb version last night.

Hoping to Bring Star Wars / FFG gaming to Thailand over the next few years.

With both Nexus of Power & Special Modifications out. What is the plan for the next release? I know there was a lot already set to be released with an equal amount that is still being worked.

I know for me, I am really interested in seeing what the data exports is going to look like. Even if it's a beta. Just so we can begin messing around with it and seeing what can be done.

I'm glad it's helping your new group! There's been lots of changes since 1.x back in 2013, and the current version supports up to Keeping the Peace.

I know The Dark Eye RPG has been really popular in Germany since the 1980's, but to be honest, I've never played it, nor do I know anyone who has played it (unless it was in the form of some old computer game). I don't even think they had an English version until the early 2000's. When they translate the latest version, I might actually take a look at it, though.

With both Nexus of Power & Special Modifications out. What is the plan for the next release? I know there was a lot already set to be released with an equal amount that is still being worked.

I'm hoping their release back-up has now been smoothed out and that there won't be anymore multiple releases in a short span of time. Now I have to add everything for two books (again), which takes awhile. Plus, I haven't bought SM yet, and only bought NoP less than a week ago.

Anyway... I'm thinking of having a command-line utility for the exporting, but I haven't done anything with it just yet. It'll be a lot of work, and I would need more information on exactly what people would want out of it. My thought is that you'd specify basically three things:

  1. What you want exported (master data table, characters, adversaries, etc)
  2. Which ones you want exported (apply filtering to above)
  3. How you want it exported (the format: XML, MDB, SDF, CSV, JSON, whatever)

From there, you can do whatever you want with the data. You can use it in your own apps, generate reports from it, or whatever.

So... everyone, give me some suggestions for what you want it to do.

I opened the png in MS Paint. Then I selected some part of it and moved it to the side, since it normally just makes a tall bar - boom, two columns. Fits much better. Size as needed, print.

Weird question looking over 'Special Modifications'... Is there any way to house-rule 2 PCs working on the same Signature Vehicle?

I could just make a custom ship I guess but was wondering if there was some way to simulate it in the Character Builder.

Is that in Special Modifications (two characters having the same signature vehicle)? Currently, when you get the signature vehicle talent, you get to choose a vehicle from whatever vehicles you have access to. These are personally-owned vehicles and vehicles from groups that you belong to. It specifically excludes vehicles that have been made signature vehicles by other characters.

Tell me more about what you're trying to do, and maybe I can come up with something.

Yes, is there any way to stop it excluding 'vehicles that have been made signature vehicles by other characters'.

In other words, to allow two people with Signature Vehicle to apply their skills to the same vehicle. (Say, a bickering husband and wife team who built a ship between them...)

Am I also right that there's currently no way to add the 'More Machine Than Man' Talent that increases the cyberware cap?

I'll have to check on this. I could make it an Option to allow multiple techs to have the same Signature Vehicle, but the real problem is combining the changes. What I basically do is go through all the rigger talents and create an on-the-fly "attachment" for the ship that includes all of the upgrades. Whenever this changes, it's deleted and re-created. This is also done for groups in the GM Tools that have ships (it loads the group member and applies its rigger talents).

To be honest, the code is a bit fragile :) and is more complicated than I like, but it currently works, which is why I haven't touched it in awhile. This might be a good excuse to redesign it. I'll let you know when I figure it out.

Am I also right that there's currently no way to add the 'More Machine Than Man' Talent that increases the cyberware cap?

You are correct. Species has an "add to max cyber cap" option, but not talents, and I don't have a mod for it either. I usually get a curve ball or two thrown at me whenever a new book comes out that has some new mechanic that the generator doesn't support. This sounds like one of those pitches :) It'll be easy enough to support, but for now, you won't be able to create the talent yourself. When I pick up the book (maybe today if my FLGS has it), and when I'm finished going through Nexus of Power and adding all of its new data, I'll add support for all the new weird things in Special Modifications which, I have the feeling, is more than just raising the cyber cap :)

Oh, and sorry for the baseball metaphor above. I just don't know enough about Cricket to make an equivalent comment for a UK native :D

Thank you! I don't allow characters to take out of career Specs, so I was thinking of allowing two characters to work on one ship. And narratively, I could see more than one person contributing towards a Signature Vehicle.

Thanks - I might have to create a custom droid species just for this PC at the moment, then, just as a work-around.

The other talents aren't especially tough - the only other thing I had a problem with is the pistol that allows extra benefits of Jury Rigging.

I assume that every crafted droid or weapon will need to be manually created anyway, like the Armourer rules. That's easy enough.

I do follow sports, but I know next to nothing about either cricket or baseball! I'm Welsh, so rugby is our national sport!

For now, the customized species is probably your best bet for increasing the cybernetics cap.

The Jury Rig thing will take some coding...

The way I ended up doing Armor crafting was creating "template" items, and having a "Craft" attachment. I'll probably do the same thing for droids.

I have Prichards and Hughes in my family tree, so I've got some Welsh in me as well :)

Dunno if that's what you're asking, but...

I'd like an export to export data in a form i could print a list (and yes i'm complaining, but not against you, is against FFG that force me to bring along several books just for 2-3 ship/weapons/NPC stats...)

so a CSV is good

1 - i'd like to export data list. Ie: list of all ship, all weapons, all armor, etc

2 - filtering as type and/or rarity could be cool (but if in csv/xls format i can apply filter on the final file)

3 - in CSV or other formatted list form i can easily manage with office programs

Thanks :)

and still +1 for your program that make things easier (even if i can't use while playing 'cause not using a windows computer while GM'ing, is still a good tool to planning and administer GM stuffs...)

i keep a running list of all species, gear, motivations/obligtations/Duty/Emotional strengths and weaknesses, attachments and such. However, I am lagging far behind on general equipment and I have nothing on vehicles.

An exporting feature would be a huge help in catching me back up.

Also, I like the idea of exporting a filtered list to generate an inventory for a shop.

So this is probably a minor issue for some, but I need the High Contrast setting for Win 10, for my eyes. This setting really screws up the Generator, even when I am printing out the sheet.

Not sure why, but I am having issues creating one of the new cybernetics skill implants in the custom data editor. I go to gear, click new, and highlight the skill in the list and click update, update, save. Loading into the char gen then, I pick the item, equip it, and the skill doesn't increase. When i go back into it, the first option in the drop down is 'add advantage to initiative checks' and not the skill I chose. Ideas?

Hi oggdude First keep up the great work,

1). any chance of a group diary/calendar function in GM tools, ie some way of recording the days/time planning scenerio's start points, noting key plot points due to happen, I am currently just got a simple excel sheet where i cross off the days in my game this is due to the characters running contracts and also to allow me too plan when other things start. But a 10 day a week starwars calendar with the ability to add planned adventures to the days and additional notes etc ... would be cool if posssible.

2). the ability to randomly generate shop inventories, by shop type, location and rarity would be cool.

3). In the adversaries section of the gm tool kit you can sort by category ie: book they are out of, any chance you could add in the ability to sort by type, ie: droid, imperial, rebel etc.... at moment i just rename all the adversaries with this descriptor followed by hypen and there name.ie: Droid- C3PO Translator.

It sure makes it easy to sort through them quickly.

On data export the ability to export character inventories seperately or view them in gm tools with out having to open the corresponding character sheet would be cool ta

many thanks
