Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Unfortunately, I seem to have struck a problem with the software, which was running perfectly well earlier this week. I think the problem is that I had my data directory set to a local SMB share; earlier this week I moved that share to a new address and now... well, now I can't get any of the four programs to launch (launcher, CharGen, GM Tools, Data Editor). I use the Manual Install, so I deleted the program directory and re-installed (I'm running 1.6.0). No dice. I hunted down the cache and other config files in Users\<my username>\AppData and deleted them, hoping that doing so would force the program to re-create them from scratch, again, no joy. I've included the error message I get from trying to launch the Launcher program below, and the system is Windows 7.

Problem signature:

Problem Signature 08: 219

Problem Signature 09: System.IO.IOException

Question, what do I need to delete from my computer to completely remove the software, so that can do a true clean install? The program files, obviously, and anything under AppData - are there any other rogue configuration files I need to delete that might still have a hint of the old SMB share address? Any registry entries?

If your data directory was set to a share that no longer exists, just set it to where your data currently resides. You can do that through the launcher.

Sorry, can't cut down quotes easily on my phone... Anyway, unfortunately, I can't load the Launcher at all - the error message in the spoiler above is from trying to start the Launcher, although launching the individual programs gives a similar error message.

I latched on to the change of folder share because it's the obvious change I've made since I last used the program, but if the Launcher isn't looking and crashing when it can't find it (which is my working hypothesis), I need to start thinking further afield.

Ah. I should probably do something about that :)

In that case, run RegEdit and go to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SWCharGen

Change the DataFolder value to your new data folder path, or just remove it to use the default.

I just added a check to make sure your data path is pointing to a valid location. If it's not, it'll display a warning dialog and revert the data path back to the default. That should clear up the above issue.

Yeah, modifying the registry entry fixed the issue - thanks for that.

So, yay, I found a bug. Sort of.

Given that one of the repair methods for the Manual Install is to wipe and start again, I was thinking that it might be good to provide a file inventory in the documentation, with things like entries in AppData, Registry etc spelled out... but given the copy-from-zip-file installation method, and the huge complexity of the data files, both default and potential custom, that wouldn't be easy...

Need some translation help. Skill categories are still showing up in English (unless you use the data editor to customize your skills), and I don't know what the proper translation for those would be. I'd need the following (Spanish, French, and German):

  • General
  • Knowledge
  • Combat

Thanks.

Here's the French:

General = Générales

Knowledge = Connaissances

Combat = Combat

Here're the german ones:

General = Allgemein
Knowledge = Wissen
Combat = Kampf

Edit: Just saw this question was already answered. Sorry.

Cool, I actually got them right :) Thanks.

As a general rule of thumb, when I'm finished updating a release, I wait until I keep my mitts off of it for two days or so before actually releasing it. However, I've been making little changes here and there with it in response to issues that have cropped up. Even today, I decided to modify the way Force talents look in the tree (they now look like the books), and add the conflict symbol, if appropriate. That took a bunch of tweaking and graphic work with GIMP, plus I had to update keys in the Print Tree feature to support it. It's finally done, so all I need to do now is add conflict to the talent editor.

The point of this is that the release won't get out before next week. Of course, more stuff will be fixed, and more features will be included, so it's a good thing :)

Probably asked before....how can I change the language of the char generator?

Click the "Language" button on the launcher. You may have to open "More Options" first.

Ogg is it possible to add a bank xp feature for the learning as you go rules?

What do you mean bank XP? You can give a character XP with the award button and it doesn't go anywhere until you spend it...

Minor bug, character generator:

When using tab to move through the fields on the character description page, the cursor will skip 'Campaign', jumping from Player name, immediately to Gender. It will switch to Campaign after pressing tab in the Eyes box, this has lead me to putting many characters into a campaign called "Has a cybernetic eye on left face..." and "Left over slave collar from past endevours." I'm sure they'd be thrilling campaigns but still. :P

Just redid the tab order for that pane, so it should progress logically now.

Learn as you go lets you put xp towards an ability in installments as you slowly learn how to do it.

Its a new thing in Keeping the Peace.

I looked over the rule, and what I suggest is to just purchase the ability and go into negative XP. Before purchasing anything else new, you'll need to accumulate enough XP to get the total back to 0 or positive.

Speaking of new rules in KtP, how would you guys want to implement Reputation? I was originally thinking of just having it selectable, maybe from the Description pane, but you can actually have different reputation effects for different spheres (Respected by Force users, Feared by ISB, etc). I was originally going to include die modifiers for the different levels (two boosts to Coercion, or whatever), but it doesn't seem like this would be across the board. Since I can't reliably apply the die modifiers, and since I have no idea where FFG is going with this "reputation" concept (will other careers get something similar down the road?), I'm now hesitant about including it at all.

Any insights or comments are welcome :)

Personally, I'd suggest waiting to see how/if it will be expanded on. I like it as a mechanic, but I think it's a bit too peripheral for adding it. It can easily be up-kept in notes until they decide to expand, clarify and mainstream.

Consider adding it as sets of skill groups. So there'd be a social group, a combat group, a knowledge group, etc. The groups could be created/modified to include/remove skills as needed.

Then, instead of having the normal icons (blue die, black die, black minus die), have a blue/black combo icon. One for minor reputation in that group, two for major, etc.

That way the player can see, at a glance, which skills might be impacted by that reputation and, in concert with the GM, they can apply the appropriate modification die to the roll.

This is an extension of the "potential" gear modification indicator that had been previously suggested, for when a player has a piece of equipment that -might- provide a boost to a roll in certain circumstances. The indicator tells the player that there's potentially something they're forgetting and to cross-reference with the equipment list and the GM.

Just a thought.

Another feature request, if possible.. As ships are expensive to repair and there are frequent discussions about keeping the party hungry, party ships can have less than a full hull threshold for extended periods. Would it be possible to add a "Current HT" box to the vehicles section? This way parties can track how much, if any, remaining un-repaired damage is on their ship within the character builder (and the associated GM tools).

What I would do is create a new pane for reputation. This pane would have the ability to add reputation for a sphere of influence.
You would basically click add then name the sphere then set what the reputation is.
I would do the same for the group sheet. As the group may have its own reputation.

Reputation is in Fly Casual, too! Pages 94-96.

I would love to see Reputation as an additional tab, and then print out as an additional page with plenty of room for notes.

Maybe it comes default with some, but with an option for write-ins.

Indeed it is. To expedite the release, I'll worry about reputation later. I'll try to get the new release out sometime this week (assuming I don't find anything else to fix) :)

Reading that sidebar in Keeping the Peace, I think banking is a poor term for it. It looks to be a mechanical framework for something extremely narrative and worked out between the player and the GM. As nice as it would be to have any dice penalties reflected on the sheet, IMO the process is just overall too specific and subjective to GM discretion.
