Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I sent you an email with some details of the bug I've been having.

Hey Oggdude,

Minor thing, but I noticed the Final Word Secondary Missile System Attachment is adding 3 Cumbersome instead of 2.

Thanks!

I have another suggestion Oggy. It's possible to increase items HP or add attachments without any HP cost?

OggDude, love the tool! It really helps collect everything in one place and streamline the process of creating characters/adversaries and such.

I found a bug, though, or at least some kind of issue...When you try to print the character sheet on Windows 10, the whole thing ends up being formatted wrong. Sometimes one of the pages will look ok, but then the other 4+ will be screwed up anyway. It's pretty inconsistent between character loads what works and what doesn't. This only started happening after I upgraded to Win 10 (with the latest version of the tool), and it looks fine on my Win 7 machine.

Ogg, this is an awesome tool.

Just been invited to join a group and found it so helpful in making sure my character was right. First session was so good with a print out of the sheet, managed to get the GM interested and the whole group is looking to start using it to keep track.

Only slight issue, I noticed that you suggest the web install as it keeps things up to date, however when trying to run the setup I keep getting HTTP 500 (internal server) errors part way through the download - each time seems to be a different file and after a differing amount of time. I've tried it on a system at work and my home PC and they both do the same. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, I'd totally agree that a section where the notes could be typed up onto the sheet would be super helpful!

Cheers

For the lightsaber construction rules, I just added item descriptors that will increase or decrease HP on an item. You can also do it if you have a talent like Intuitive Improvements, and I think Tinkerer also allows you to choose items to increase the HPs. As far as attachments that cost 0 HP, those are already supported.

Do you have an example of what it looks like? All sheets are basically just big bitmaps. As long as the aspect of the page is somewhere in the vicinity US Letter size (A4 should work fine as well), it should look OK. Of course, if they did something weird to the print drivers in Win10, there might be some other issues.

Hi Guys,

I've been using this awesome tool for a while, but this is the first time I've run into an issue I couldn't work around.

I'm trying to import two PCs that a player is sending me and I'm getting the "Not a valid character" window popping up.

He's on 1.3.6.0 and I just upgraded to 1.3.7.0.

Any ideas?

I am getting this as well, only this includes the default characters that came with the generator!

For reference, the first character I tried to load was generated with http://thompsonpeters.com/eote/ and then imported.

Is this a problem with characters or adversaries? If you email them to me, I'll see if I can figure out the issue. It might have to do with motivations, but they should be backward compatible.

Characters. What's odd is that the problem persisted even when I tried to load up characters that came with the program. I did a manual install before, so now I'm trying a web install to see if I mucked something up. What's your email?

There shouldn't be any characters that come with the apps. There are adversaries in the imports, however. You may have just had some old characters left in the default data directory.

I may have said it before, but if not, this is -- of course -- an awesome resource!

A question: Any chance to get an option for adding attacks to the Compact Character Sheet?

Yeah, they didn't show up with the web install. I must have been seeing adversaries. I was hoping that it was just a bad install on my part, but when I tried to load the character file exported from the online random generator again, it still didn't work. Just emailed you the file, hope it gives some insight.

You mean weapons? Any weapon set to "Show" has the potential of being on the compact sheet.

The file you sent me is an adversary. I imported her into Adversaries in GM Tools and it worked just fine. It won't import as a character, though.

Gotcha! I suppose I just assumed the generator at http://thompsonpeters.com/eote/ was putting out characters, not adversaries. Sorry about that! Fantastic tool, by the way. I love how it calculates group Duty for me!

Uh, so where on that site is there an Adversary Generator? I’m not seeing anything like that anywhere on the site I’m looking at.

Try here .

As always, Ogg, this is an amazing release. Thank you so much for the tool and your constant efforts to make it better.

Three quick things:

  1. Is there a way to display weapons with different talent or FP upgrades applied? IE, I have my Force Pike, and I'd love to show it when using Frenzied attack and when using the Sense: Control upgrade.
  2. I'm having some trouble with innate skills on attachments. Namely, I can't add them :) When I check a box and try to increment the rank or ability, I find that I cannot change it from 0. Thoughts on what might be going on here? I created a new data set and tried it in that with the same results.
  3. I love the new print option! Thanks much!!! Not sure if this is on the radar or not, but it would be awesome to print to PDF in such a way that it maintained the text as searchable.

Again, all very minor quibbles in a consistently fantastic program!

1. If you click on "Show" next to your weapon, it'll show up on the front page of the character sheet with all of the modifiers applied to the dice pool, including upgrades, boosts, setbacks, advantages, and Force dice as applicable. Situational modifiers that only apply in certain conditions are not added, however.

2. Not sure what you mean here. If an attachment gives you a skill rank, you'll see it in the Skills pane under "Attach".

3. I'd have to change the way I do the sheets in order for that to happen. Right now, I just create a big bitmap. You could, possibly, print to a PDF, then run the PDF through an OCR processor, but I've never done that, so I'm not sure how it works or what software to use.

Thanks for the answers. Some quick thoughts:

  1. Giving a way to show two or three versions of a weapon's dice pool would be a really nice add for the future! IE, one as normal, one with Sense: Control applied, another with both that and frenzied attack applied, etc. It wouldn't even have to read from the character's talents, it could just be a user defined pool.
  2. Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm using the Data Editor, and I cannot create a new attachment that has an innate skill mod. The program will not allow me to increment the skill or ability ranks using the arrow buttons, nor can I type in a value.
  3. Totally understood, thanks!

Oh! I saw that page before, but I thought it just generated text that could be manually copied over to a character sheet. I didn’t know that it exported the XML.

Cool!

Hi Oggdude

I had a quick look through the Inquisitor creator in the GM Tools section and noticed a couple of minor issues; in stage 3 a spelling error in the abilities (Intimidating Presence has an extra n at the end of Intimidating), and one stage four there are two identical Heavy Blaster Pistol entries. That said, it is a brilliant piece of programming and is going ton make things so much easier for me.

One other issue I have found though, I was trying to modify one of the antagonists that I had imported from the CRB import folders you provided, but every time I tried to add ranks in Athletics to the Pirate Captain it failed to remember the extra ranks even if I made a copy. The annoyance being that if I want or need to modify an NPC for my game instead of simply tweaking a copy of the Antagonist entry I have to type it all out from scratch.

Thanks so much for your work, I have found this to be of immense help with my campaign.

Fixed the spelling error. The two blasters are there on purpose so the Inquisitor can use them both if you want. As for the skill ranks, after modifying them, click somewhere else. That's when they're actually saved. It's an idiosyncrasy of the grid I'm using. There's a way around it, but it causes other problems, so I'm just living with it :)

Edit: Well... since you brought it up, it got me thinking... The numeric spinner is actually a custom control for the DataGridView grid, since it doesn't come with one stock. So, since it's a custom control, I just went in and modified it to automatically set the cell's value each time the spinner changes. This bypasses the normal Commit you have to do with the grid, which never really worked the way I wanted it. So... I think I found a solution to the problem. I'll need to test it some more, however.

Hey there Oggdude.

My group and I really love your tool and use it alsmost every day to either develope or create our characters. In a way, you have become a part of our everyday live. :D

That said I'd like to enter here with some criticism.^^

We are a german group an spend some time translating what was translatable. With the new upgrade I saw that the motivations have to be reduced to description only. In my oppinion, that's a step back. I understand that you separated motivations and specialMotivations in two files. basically a step forward. But connecting both based on the name and not the id of the motivation seems like you where half asleep when you did this. The result is, that we can't translate the motivations anymore.

I'd advice you to keep translateability in mind when working on the editor. You implemented the possibility in the first place. Please don't take it away now.

Being able to translate more of the tool would be even greater.

My second comment: Performance. You did a great job in increading performance between 1.4 and 1.5. Keep up the good optimization work. :)

And last but hard: I got the feeling that with the new update you where more focused on implementing content and not optimizing the tool. Performance is a lot better, yes. But a lot of data-handling and the way the tool works in the background seems to be unfitting for your actual programming-abilities. If I were you, I'd take some time to optimize the code and the data-handling and the structure of the databases and zhe code. This way you could stabilize the programm, implement better translateability and editability (is that a word?^^) and maybe even push performance even more.

I love 1.4.6. So please don't get this post as a negative statement. But my group and I won't be using 1.5 for now. We have the feeling you could've focused more on the basics than more content.

That said: Keep up the good work. I am eagerly waiting for the next update to see if we can hop on the oggdude-train again.

Best regards

Wogister
