Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Oh, btw, is there any way of translating the application? or at least the char pdf sheet?

Some of it is. You can change the names of the characteristics by editing the XML file, and you can do whatever you want to the descriptions of talents, gear, etc. But for the rest, I'll need to do a major overhaul to make the text available for translation. I'll get to it eventually :)

Hi and thanks for this great application.

This new version hangs when trying the char editor (downloaded from google drive, chrome blocks me the dropbox donwload as "malicious", tho it is not):

Deleted all forlder content before updating. Also, just in case, I deleted the cache.

Is this from the web install, or the ZIP?

Google Drive zip

Hi, After our last session we were able to choose between 15xp or add the specialization tree: recruit. The problem is that i can only "Purchase" the tree and not "add" it. Is there a way to only add it?

We also manage to blast asunder a Dark trooper and take his PLASMA SHELL ASSAULT CANNON!!.. awesome. but i can't find it in the SWEchargen. Can i some how make my own or import it somehow?

from a rebel scum named Gar-Nak

I've manage to add the plasma shell assault cannon to SWEchargen but now i can't find all of the info for the weapon.

What i need: Encumbrance, Hardpoints, Cost, Rarity, Restricted?

thanks

Oggdude

First up, awesome, awesome work, thank you very much.

Secondly, I just updated to version 1.2.0.0, and I was having the problem listed above - The launcher, data editor and gm tools programs would all load, but the character generator would not.

This was with the Manual (zip) install from the Google Drive link in your signature; I tried clearing the cache and deleting all items in the folder and re-installing from the zip, no joy. I then downloaded the zip from your dropbox link, and that version works. I think that you may have the incorrect version linked for the Google Drive version after the minor update you mentioned on July-28 (8:14pm forum time).

Well, thanks for debugging that problem for me :) I copied the ZIP to both locations, but for some reason, Google Drive didn't sync properly (there's a red X in the icon). I'm re-copying it right now, so hopefully, this one will work.

I have to say, it makes me so sad that you don't take advantage of those extra zeroes on the version number for every time you release a hot fix. Why aren't we on 1.2.4.0? Or maybe 1.2.2.1? Why!? :P

I am using Windows 8 and I am having a problem the char. gen will not load but all the parts of the program load just fine can someone please help or let me know what I might be doing wrong.

I'm having issues with the ZIP file on Google Drive. Download it from DropBox until I get it worked out.

Yeah, yeah... :) I was just being lazy. I'll try to up the version on the launcher so you'll see the bug fix version displayed on the bottom.

OggDude: Great software! I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but I think I found a bug. Every time I try to add the Strength Enhancing System to Laminate armor, I get an "Unhandled Exception" error.

I just tried it and it worked for me. Can you send me your character with the unmodified armor? I'll see if I can replicate the bug.

Unfortunately, I can't send the file, since every time this bug kicks in, the file is deleted (for some ungodly reason), even if I've saved it before the bug happens. Oh, I should have mentioned, this is only happening in the GM tools when trying to make a NPC, not when making a character.

The problem occurs if you select the Athletics optional mod without having given the adversary the Athletics skill. I fixed it for the next version, but in the meantime, either don't select that mod, or give the adversary Athletics.

You know what would be helpful? an equipment notes sections. my character has equipment that is not in the books. And I have to out it in other note sections but it would be nice to have a notes section that maybe appears if you enter stuff into it. Maybe lines with the ability to put encumbrances etc.

You can add custom items in the data editor. I added a few pistol mods and Mandalorian armor. Its really easy if you can find something that's close to what you want then make a copy and edit it. Or you can just make something up from scratch.

If its your first time in the data editor you need to make a custom data set, Its pretty easy to set up.

OggDude, I believe the data for the Commander's Commodore specializations don't quite match up. The lines between talents in the rulebook are a bit different than the lines in the program.

What he said :) although the "Default Dataset" (which is your DataCustom directory) is always active. If you plan on sharing your custom items, though, creating a data set can make it a lot easier.

Also, you can add notes to inventory items that are already present. Just select the item and click "Notes".

Fixed. Thanks :)

Does it really make sense to add "set of baron formal wear from chandrilla" to the data set? Or grand Moff whatsit code cylander? Seems silly to add crap like that to the database. It really is only relevant to 1 character. That kind of stuff makes more sense in a not field in the equipment section.

For things like that, using "Notes" would get the job done. For instance, "Heavy Clothing" with note "Set of Baron formal wear from Chandrilla", or "Datapad" with note "Contains Grand Moff Elmerfudd's code cylinder", or whatever. It's not as flexible as having custom items, but it'll work in a pinch.

I'll see about adding custom items for characters like I do for adversaries, but it might be awhile.

Im not looking for a custom items field. More of just a simple note type field in the equipment section.

This is an awesome tool, but sometime I need to use it on my Mac. I can get it to run in CrossOver (a commercialized version of Wine from CodeWeavers), but it has a few issues that I was wondering if anyone else has resolved:

1. Cannot get talents text to show up in interface correctly. I get a big blank box, which appears to resize based on the amount of text (I have descriptions of all talents in the db).

2. Probably related to above, but the sidebar in the DB editor that shows all of the strings used to generate die symbols displays all of the values huge.

3. Can not get a print dialog to open. Crashes entire application (Would like to print to PDF).

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure about the print dialog, but those other boxes are web browser controls. I believe the web browser control is just a .NET shell around the standard ActiveX web browser control that comes with IE. Because it's not a native .NET control, that's probably why they're not showing up correctly.

Still, a lot more of it seems to be working than I would have thought possible

I'm having some trouble with the GM Tools. I'm tinkering around with the groups but for what ever reason it doesn't actually save my player characters that I add to it. it remembers the group name and the ship I added to it. but the characters just disappear when I reopen it or try to use the print options.

Update: OK I think the issue has something to do with the way I have the folder shared between mine and my roommate's computer. cause I closed it all down on his machine and go to mine and I open up the same group I had made and everything's there even though it wasn't showing up on his computer.

My group just found a graphical error tonite in the char generator here and it carries over to the PDF here

That icon means "Remove a setback dice"

It might be worth adding some kind of legend to the printouts or something to indicate what that symbol means.

It makes sense, and I think it's very useful, but the question does come up often.
