Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm getting an exception with opening the GM Tools

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Oggdude,

I'm having some difficulty running the new version of your software. The last version I used was 1.1.0.9. It worked perfectly, and I went to upgrade to the new one. I have no issues running the Launcher or DataEditor. But I have a problem with the generator and GMTools.

I have the same issue whether I install is manually or using your web service. The error log below is from the web service.

This is the error report I get, (it crashes before anything even opens.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

The reason I have them as separate pages is because each page has its own header, followed by variable-sized information. I could make it all one continuous sheet, but it might look kind of funny, and you could end up with the header block at the bottom of a page.

If other people are interested in having this as an option, I could look into adding it.

I concur - it would be great to have an option of reducing the sheet length by eliminating some of the paging (which leads to the 'notes' placeholders).

It seems that without strict paging, and with the headers dropped (or printed on every other page only), in the 'compact' layout we could save almost half the trees being used up for the char sheet.

And yeas, it would be like a dream to have the possibility to adjust or edit the character sheet templates. I'm not familiar with .net, but is it some templates engine you're using to generate the printouts?

Love this thing, but a quick note: you seem to be missing the Incom A-24 Sleuth-class scout ship, mentioned on page 59 of Enter the Unknown .

But definitely keep up the good work, man. I'll donate after my next paycheck.

Ermmm... The A-24 is the 4th ship on the list when you first open the model list.

Do you have any stock vehicles created? If so, ZIP them up and send them to me. It looks like it's having an issue with a stock vehicle.

The reason I have them as separate pages is because each page has its own header, followed by variable-sized information. I could make it all one continuous sheet, but it might look kind of funny, and you could end up with the header block at the bottom of a page.

If other people are interested in having this as an option, I could look into adding it.

And yeas, it would be like a dream to have the possibility to adjust or edit the character sheet templates. I'm not familiar with .net, but is it some templates engine you're using to generate the printouts?

I'm not talking about the text header at the top with the character's name, I'm talking about the section headers, like the description/portrait header for the social page, the XP/Species header for the talents/powers page, and the Enc/Credits page for equipment. These help keep the sheet organized. As I said, I could just stop forcing these section headers to appear on their own pages and treat them like any other section, but it will make it more difficult to find certain information. Even then, it won't eliminate the notes sections, since they're added to fill out the sheet whenever the next part of the sheet won't fit on the current page (it adds the notes, then goes to the next page).

I'm not using a template, or a report generator, or anything like that. In fact, the first two weeks of design for the app was me trying to figure out the best way to present the character sheet. I tried using HTML to define the sheet, but I just didn't have the control over the content that I wanted. I ended up just using an off-screen form, dynamically adding what I need, then taking a bitmap of the final page. I then get rid of the dynamic controls and start another page.

Yes, Windows 7 64bit.

I'm getting the following exception when trying to remove a stock vehicle in the GM tool. I've confirmed that the file is not actually in use (other than by the tool).

Here's the error info. I'm using a custom data path. I'm using version 1.1.4.0. Please PM me if you need more info.

There is a file sharing violation. A different process might be using the file. [ <My custom data path>\CacheDB.sdf ]

Huh. It definitely wasn't there earlier. I wonder if it didn't load them all?

Well, problem solved, at any rate. I withdraw my only complaint and leave the accolades.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Are you running a 64-bit OS?

Yes, Windows 7 64bit.

Check your install directory and tell me which .DLL files you see there. Also, verify that it contains an X86 and AMD64 directory and that each contains seven .DLL files.

Are you running the character generator at the same time?

Hmmm, maybe I'm daft, but I can't seem to find the option to have multiple careers. I opened the generator without problems and can not add a second or third career.

On the Specializations page, click the Purchase button at the top, select the Show All Specializations option, and choose a new specialization from the drop down menu.

You don't technically ever get a second career but you can pick up specializations from other careers for extra XP cost.

When I add the special ammo for the Corellian Long bow, there is no option to specify quantity. The arrows have a limited ammo quality and I would rather not have to keep adding arrows manually.

The three long bows are just profiles. Purchase the main bow, then add the two other profiles if you plan on using them. Click on "Show" to have them displayed on the first page. To keep track of the arrows, purchase them in the Gear pane.

No, GM tool only. Even tried closing the launcher, just to be on the safe side.

OK got the database thing sorted out. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I would suggest that if the program can tell its your first time running the editor it just prompts you to make a new data set.

On a side note. Its possible that this is the fault of my printer, but the grey on the first page (simple layout) is barely visible. Would it be easy to make it a few shades darker? Or just add an underscore to the lines with the grey highlight?

Thanks :D

Ah. So this happened when you ran the editor before running the other apps when you didn't have a cache? Interesting, I'll look into that.

The editor launched fine, as it doesn't use the cached list object that the tools and chargen uses. After recreating the cache, I was able to remove a stock vehicle with no problem. So, I'm still not sure where the issue was.

Feature Request:

Can you add some options to disable printing the credits/XP/encumbrance? These things change fairly often, so just having a blank space there that can be filled in with pencil would be helpful.

Thanks. :)

Looking good.

However, I can't see more than two weapons on the character sheet. I've selected all of them to "show" on the builder.

With simplified style and a single-line weapon, you should be able to see 15 of them. At full color, 8 of them (there's actually a formatting issue and it'll show about 10, but it should be limited to 8). If weapon descriptions take up more than one line, it'll cut that down. This is on the first page of the sheet, at the bottom.

Hmm, I don't know what it is. My droid created character deselects Arc Welder after I select it and go to the print screen. None of my other created characters have done that.

Perhaps its an Arc Welder thing? Switching between color or simplified doesn't change it.

Well, I created an astromech droid and added a bunch of weapons to him. They all show up fine, whether or not arc welder has been set to "Show".

You can export the character in question and email him to me. I'll see if I can replicate the problem.
