Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I think he's asking for the Description data so he doesn't have to enter it all himself.

Ah. Sorry, won't help you there Zuty.

Thanks Satola.

Wasn't there a Hutt species choice a while ago? Was it removed or was that my imagination talking?

They do not have the descriptions. He is asking for someone to export a dataset with the descriptions.

As soon as I click on the option to update it pops up, so before it has actually updated.

Ah, criminy. I had to remove the reference to the database and add it again, which then reset the interface DLL back to being a prerequisite (which is why it yelled at you). I have to, yet again, turn that off.

Anyway, I re-published the install, so you should be good to go. DropBox says it has a minute to go, so give it 5 :) Oh, and this only applies to the web install, not the manual install.

I opened up the program and it said, "Hey, you don't have the latest program, do you want to download it?" I said yes, and it did, then it popped up with that error. I downloaded a new Web Install and when I ran setup.exe it verified application requirements then popped up with the same error, "Application cannot be started. Contact the application vendor." It doesn't give me the option of installing into a different directory.

Edit: Details...

That sounds like a DropBox issue, or maybe your internet connection. I'd wait awhile and give it another go. I upgraded from that same install and it worked fine for me.

There's a Hutt adversary, but not a species. Why, does someone in your group want to play a Hutt? :)

Of course, who wouldn't want to play a Hutt? :)

I've been champing at the bit to play a Hutt A-Wing Pilot for some time now.

True story...

hmm, I was just looking at the Gravity Belt. It says description is in Suns of Fortune pg 103. I have nothing in my copy of the book. Was it in during the Beta of the book & taken out before final printing or am I missing something?

Not to mention the bit where Corran Horn is talking to Jabba the Hutt in the book I, Jedi, and they're reminiscing about the fights they had before Jabba got so fat. Corran remembers Jabba beating people off with his fists, rolling around to squish people that had tried to jump on his back to attack him, etc.

Looking at the Hutt Crime Lord adversary, a first draft of the species (a young Hutt, anyway) might look something like this:

Brawn: 3
Agility: 1
Intellect: 2
Cunning: 3
Willpower: 2
Presence: 1

Wound: +12
Strain: +8
Starting XP: 80

Skills:
Resilience 1

Talents:
Durable 1

Options: Underworld +1 or Deception +1

Abilities:
Awkward (Hutts add setback x3 to all Brawl, Melee, and Coordination checks)
Ponderous (Hutts can never spend more than one maneuver moving per turn)

Of course, I'd have to add a "Add Setback" to the generator for this :) Feel free to chime in with your own opinions.

Yeah, that's what I was asking for. No problem, I've got plenty of time to add it all in myself.

It might be a pain to add them in yourself, but if you're just starting out, it's actually a good way to learn the game. You'll be amazed at how much you retain if you have to go to the page number and type in the descriptions.

And I agree 110%, it's how I was able to learn and understand the Star Wars RP system from Wizards of the Coast so well. And, since I plan on GMing this game, it will only be beneficial for me and my group if I know even just vaguely what everything does.

Anyway, FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC program you've made Oggy. It's already helped me immensely and help sway me and my friends to buy the books. I was hesitant at first about the game, but your program really sold the game for me and helped explain the game to me better than the core book did. Not saying the core book was bad at explaining the game, it was just really foreboding.

Cool, thanks :) I hope someone from FFG is reading this. I think a lot of companies have a poor outlook on projects like this, since they think it's going to cost them sales. If I had included text from the books, I'm sure I would have gotten a C&D letter by now. But I had a feeling that adding the page numbers for the descriptions would actually encourage people to buy the books. And it looks like it does :)

Per Andy Fischer they have a high willpower. Like Toydarians. This is how they resist the force.

They got removed from the game and left in the table. Oggdude should probably remove them as there is just the grav chute in the game.

" I'm guessing you're using the ZIP manual install? Have you tried copying it to a new folder? What is your data directory set to, and do you have data in it?"

Hi Ogg,

Wow...good call on the ZIP, that is exactly what I did. I did that the first time and this time when it opened I just moved all the "new" files over into that folder where I kept the other. Now I never put then in the C drive I just had a folder on my desktop so I dont know if that was my initial mistake. The new folder didn't clear it up.

Um...data directory...what is that set to? Sorry bud my ignorance is showing for this one.

3 odd things =

1) I can open the SWCharGenDataEditor and the SWCharGenLauncher and use them in limited fashion. (its how i got to the forum)

2) All of the file extentions end in .dll so as an example "Ionic.Zip.dll"

3) Ya know how window docs have that big W on them now as symbol when you look at your files, for quick reference at a glance I imagine. Well all of those .dll files have an image of two gears on them. And when I try to open them they ask me "what do you want to open it with?" Which confuses me as I tried to download the Miscrosoft .Net from your FAQ and that told me I had a "more" advanced version so I didn't need to get it.

I know I am asking you to to armchair quarterback this so whatever info you need let me know and I will do my best to dig it up.

Are you running 64 bit Windows? If so, try following the directions in this post and see if that clears it up.

You shouldn't have to touch the DLL files. Just use the launcher to launch the three apps.

As for the data directory, it defaults to a place under your user account's AppData directory. If you have your data in another directory (and this is user data, not the "Data" directory; user data includes "DataCustom", "Characters", "Encounters", "Groups", and "StockVehicles"), then using the launcher, make sure "More Options" is checked, then click "Data Path" and change your data directory to wherever your user data is located. You can optionally transfer your user data to the default data path by clicking the "Transfer" button. It's kind of the opposite approach :) Either way will allow the apps to find your user data.

Hey Ogg,

I wanted to let you know that the bug fix that you suggested in the thread (and apparently corrected in 1.1.2.0) corrected the problem I was having. I can now open all aspects of the program including the CharGen and GMTools. Thanks a lot. Love this stuff and keep it coming.

So 3 willpower and 2 cunning? I suppose that since they get stuck with two negative "abilities", maybe they could have 3 in both. I'm also thinking 14 might be a better starting wound.

I would like to make a suggestion for a new feature:

Data Path is proving a little...inconvenient for me as a GM.

I am running 4 games of EotE right now (although that will soon go down to 3) and I thought initially if I just use the exe in the relevant dropbox area, it would provide me with the characters from that group. However because the data path is saved it doesn't matter the program I use, I have to change the data path to the relevant group.

Maybe add a way for someone to set up data paths that you can quick select between to make it easier for managing GMs?

How about being able to specify it as a command parameter, such as: SWCharGen.exe /data "C:\User\Fred\DropBox\MyData" .

That would be great...can it work?

I decided to take a look at parts of your awesome work that I never before had looked at, namely the Encounters. However every time I try to import an Encounter, the program returns an error message:

Forum wouldn't allow me to post image directly, see link here for error message: http://tinyurl.com/kr3xmec

If I choose Quit, the application quits. If I choose Continue, it seems to try to load the encounter and the program remains unresponsive.

EDIT: Also, once upon a time I went through all talents and added the proper description from the book using the DataEditor, this was using version 1.1.0.3, is there an easy way to transfer these descriptions to the new one?

Edited by Morridini

I just figured out that the command line thing won't work Ogg since it would be synced on dropbox to match up with my command line, so unless everyone else has their username the same as mine and have their file structure set up in the exact same way (which they haven't) the character generator would break for them but work fine for me.

I have version 1.1.2.0 and it looks like there may be n error in the Soldier:Medic Specialization tree. Unless I missed an update from the age of rebellion beta, the node links on the bottom level of the tree don't match up.

AoR Beta has a link between It's Not That bad (cost 25) and Dedication. The software lacks that link, and instead has one between It's Not That bad (cost 25) and Supreme Stim Appliction (cost 25).

I'm guessing the error is in the software's data set, as that would be a redundant link.

Just an FYI in case this is a bug. I can always fix my own copy for now.

[EDIT] Another thing I've noticed as I've been experimenting witht he program, It is my understanding that Brawn factors into one's total Wound threshold. However, when I applied a Dedication for a +1 Brawn, the wound threshold did not increase. The encumerance threshodl did, but not the Wounds.

So the character generator, that had been working fine unitll last night, now refuses to work... running windows 7, reinstalled the .exe files and the .net stuff for windows and STILL no joy, any suggestions?
