Another Character Generator

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'll admit, a loot generator seems out of scope for a character generator. Why not just a simple web page or web app. Anyone can make it and lets you focus on making your app the best character generator possible.

Besides, it's not like this game has random loot tables. I totally get the desire to want one, though.

I just downloaded the Google Web Install and came up with the following error when I tried to run the Setup.exe file. I have Windows 8 (well, 8.1).

It's a Google drive glitch. The file's there, GD just returned a not found error for some reason. I'd try again in a bit and see if it works.

For the sake of argument...say I have particular items that I don't want my players to be able to buy that is not restricted, say a special item held by an NPC. For example Mando armor. How should I stat it out in the char gen? Restricted or have a disclaimer in the description?

*shrug* Just tell your players. They can't buy something that you say is not for sale. It's your game.

A number of people are requesting a loot generator. I think I need this to be 'splained to me, Lucy :) Wouldn't "loot" be whatever equipment they have on them? And that's already part of the generator. I mean, it's not like you kill a gundark and out plops 1,000 credits, a +1 heavy blaster rifle, and a Staff of the Jedi :)

Of course, there's an excellent chance I'm just missing something obvious here...

The way I play loot is my players roll perception, and depending on how they roll I give them what's listed on the adversary sheet. But, a lot of people like random loot for some reason.

I'm in the same boat as Ogg with the loot; you just find what they were carrying and maybe a few extra credits.

However, this loot table is pretty helpful for those wanting more...

http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/88572-loot-table/?hl=narrative

I'm pretty much with them, I don't understand the purpose. But I'm always open to new things...

I ran into an issue when making a group in the GM Tools. When I "added" the group it would not appear in the list of groups. I tried to build it several times before I exited the program then came back in. Only then were the groups visible (all 4 or 5 that I made were there). When I tried to remove the extra groups I got an error message about an "unhandled exception" and exited the program. When I came back in the removed group was indeed gone. Removing each subsequent group brought on the same error message and a restart of the program to get rid of the group.

Keep up the great work!

Is there a way to print the skill tree as it appears in the character builder once I've bought some talents off it. I would like to have it still in the tree format with maybe an x or a check in the corner so I know iv bought it.

The random loot request was mainly to streamline building encounters as a GM. I add some adversaries and if i want them to have different loot than the norm to switch things up the tool would let me do that. For example, I have three rivals and I want to give them each a pistol. I set the parameters to only spit out pistols and it randomly picks a pistol for each of them.

Another case is when running modules which tend to be pretty loot light from what I have seen. All these guys have padded armor and a light pistol and nothing else. No comlinks, no stimpacks, no goggles, etc. This would be a very quick way to spruce them up a bit ahead of time without the gm having to come up with a bunch of random stuff on the fly during the session.

Edited by ianinak

Couldn't you just add gear to the adversary? Or a note in the encounter tool?

(I love the programs Ogg by the way and appreciate all your work) Ok, I am about as tech savvy as a one eyed rancor so please bare with me. I had the old version still in my computer when I grabbed the updated version today. I also made sure I had all the compatible programs that you listed in the FAQ for the new one. Now the old one worked fine, yet when I go to open the CharGen the little spinner comes on and nothing happens. I deleted all the old stuff and started fresh, just in case. Still won't open beyond the new launcher. Suggestions please?

I can't install this. Tried to install it on two different computers running windows 7 x64, both running .net 4.5 fully updated and it gives me this when i try to launch the application.

I've been looking into this one. I think what the problem is is that I only included the 32-bit versions of the SQL CE DLLs with the app. Until I get this fixed, try this:

  1. Install Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 , using the 64-bit MSI
  2. Back up your install
  3. Run the launcher
  4. Click the "App Folder" button
  5. Remove all files starting with "System.Data.SqlServerCe" (should be three of them)
  6. Run one of the apps

I'm guessing that will cause the program to use the GAC version of the SQL Server CE framework instead of the one I included. And since you just installed it into the GAC, it should work.

In the next release, I'll be including both 32 and 64 bit versions of the engine.

" I'm guessing you're using the ZIP manual install? Have you tried copying it to a new folder? What is your data directory set to, and do you have data in it?"

Hi Ogg,

Wow...good call on the ZIP, that is exactly what I did. I did that the first time and this time when it opened I just moved all the "new" files over into that folder where I kept the other. Now I never put then in the C drive I just had a folder on my desktop so I dont know if that was my initial mistake. The new folder didn't clear it up.

Um...data directory...what is that set to? Sorry bud my ignorance is showing for this one.

3 odd things =
1) I can open the SWCharGenDataEditor and the SWCharGenLauncher and use them in limited fashion. (its how i got to the forum) But not the other two.
2) All of the file extentions end in .dll so as an example "Ionic.Zip.dll"

3) Ya know how window docs have that big W on them now as symbol when you look at your files, for quick reference at a glance I imagine. Well all of those .dll files have an image of two gears on them. And when I try to open them they ask me "what do you want to open it with?" Which confuses me as I tried to download the Miscrosoft .Net from your FAQ and that told me I had a "more" advanced version so I didn't need to get it.

I know I am asking you to to armchair quarterback this so whatever info you need let me know and I will do my best to dig it up.

Are you running 64 bit Windows? If so, try following the directions in this post and see if that clears it up.

You shouldn't have to touch the DLL files. Just use the launcher to launch the three apps.

As for the data directory, it defaults to a place under your user account's AppData directory. If you have your data in another directory (and this is user data, not the "Data" directory; user data includes "DataCustom", "Characters", "Encounters", "Groups", and "StockVehicles"), then using the launcher, make sure "More Options" is checked, then click "Data Path" and change your data directory to wherever your user data is located. You can optionally transfer your user data to the default data path by clicking the "Transfer" button. It's kind of the opposite approach :) Either way will allow the apps to find your user data.

Here's the new release. The big change to this one is that the apps will now auto-refresh to match the current data. This is especially useful for people sharing their data on a cloud service. If you make a change to something, any other user will see the change within seconds (however long it takes their local sync drive to catch up). So, you don't have to close the apps and reopen them again. This includes both GM Tools and the character generator.

Release is currently being uploaded. Wait until about 10-15 minutes after the post time before you download.

Release 1.1.2.0

New Features and Enhancements:

  • Added auto-refresh to both the GM Tools and Character Generator. Whenever a character, encounter, adversary, group, or stock vehicle is modified outside of the application, it is automatically detected and all lists are updated accordingly. This is particuarly useful if you're using a cloud storage system or network share for your data. If someone on another computer (or another instance of an app on the same computer) creates, modifies, or deletes an item, the changes will show up in all other instances without having to manually refresh.
  • Added a summary for encounters in GM Tools;
  • The apps now keep track of the last time a character, encounter, etc., has been updated. This value will show up in the summary for those items, and will also be displayed in the character summary panel in the Character Generator.
  • The GM Tools load window now uses a background worker thread for smoother UI. The percentages in the progress bar will now more accurately display the progress of the objects being loaded.

Bug Fixes:

  • Unranked talents were not contributing die modifiers properly for characters. It will now work for characters.
  • Adversaries were also not being properly recalculated, which could cause die modifiers not to show up. They will now always be recalculated.
  • Quality overrides for vehicle weapons were incorrectly changing the quality counts for the weapon stored in base data, not just the vehicle weapon. This was causing current weapons systems to not match up properly with their vehicle weapon or upgrade, which could cause a crash when displaying a vehicle summary. Base data should never, ever, be changed by anything. When figuring out quality overrides, cloned copies of the quality descriptors are now used instead of the actual descriptors for the base weapon. Base weapon data is no longer changed, and vehicle weapons systems are matched properly with the current weapon list.
  • In the vehicle summary control, the default silhouette image was being taken from the incorrect location. This has been fixed.
  • The last install included a local copy of the SQL Server Compact 3.5 framework so you didn't have to install it from Microsoft. Unfortunately, I just included the 32-bit versions of the DLLs, which won't work in 64-bit Windows (the apps would either crash or lock up). The install now includes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the DLL, so 64-bit Windows should now work out of the box. If you're installing from a ZIP file, be sure to install into a new folder, or remove all files from the old folder before copying the new release.
  • There was a bug when importing certain items, such as adversaries, where equipment was not being imported. This is fixed.
  • The summary panel at the bottom of the Add Adversary dialog was not scaling properly at higher DPI settings. This is now fixed.

Big thanks goes out to Sven Bott for his donation. Thanks, Sven!

Loaded the new version. Everything came across perfectly except the Encounters I had built. They were all wiped. Everything else was just as I had left it.

Not a big deal for me since I was planning on deleting them all anyway. My game is moving to the next part and I don't need the old encounter sheets.

But if you are planning a manual install be sure to back up things before you do just in case.

Yikes, yeah. I'll get a fix out for that soon. Until then, all you have to do is close the GM Tools and open it again and they'll be there.

And they are. I feel stupid now

Hey, you caught a bug. I think you're a genius :)

The release has been re-deployed to fix the encounters problem (it's kind of a biggie, or I would have waited a bit). It should be available in about 10 minutes or so.

Belay that order, Lieutenant! DropBox got filled up, so I'm making more space. DropBox downloads will be offline for a bit. I'll let you know when it's ready.

OK, it's ready :)
