Character creation question

By Split Light, in Game Mechanics

My wife was building a character for an upcoming game. She's making a human slicer, and adding the doctor specialization from the colonist.

She did the basic start on her character, picked her skills for tech and slicer. She then put points into her two non-class skills for being human. She chose medicine and gunnery. She then went to spend her experience points, and added the Doctor specialization and we realized that that would also make doctor a class skill, and she had already put that free non-class skill point there.

So the basic question is, when in the process do you use your two points for being human. Is it at race selection, or after you have already spent experience points. If it's after exp spending, she won't be able to put a rank in medicine.

Thanks all.

You'd select your non-career skills before you start spending any of a character's initial XP budget.

So for your example, your wife is fine in selecting Medicine as one of her non-career skills, since she won't be able to purchase the Doctor spec until after selecting her initial career & spec.
