Drowning Martyr

Quick question: Can the drowning martyr be discarded to kill a character, and then saved from being discarded by the likes of Maester Wendamyr? If that does happen, wouldn't the target of the kill still die?

ktom
Nope.

Discarding the Martyr is a COST of the kill. So if you save it from being discarded, it was never actually discarded. If it was never actually discarded, you didn't pay the cost. If you don't pay the cost, you don't get to resolve the effect.

As a follow up question then, why does the Zealous Deckhand have "(cannot be saved)" printed. Isn't that the same scenario?

ktom
Primarily a (common) templating inconsistency.

However, consider the GJ mirror match where I can stop you from killing my 2-STR character by saving your Martyr from the discard. Add 5KE-Aeron into that mix (so he's discarded anyway, but doesn't take my character with it) for some real fun. That bizarre, unlikely situation would not be possible with the Deckhand because of the "cannot be saved."
