Apprentice to Acolyte

By master yoda, in WFRP Gamemasters

I was wanting to do a test of some sort to graduate my apprentice into becoming an Acolyte. But I am unsure of how I would go about it. In Warhammer Lore is that something that happens or do they just get recongized as a higher level. I was thinking about doing something for Acolyte and Wizard careers, giving him a specialization or item when he passes. The apprentice is of the Grey Order.

I know Grey wizards go on secret missions to find and/or stop hidden organizations and the such for the Empire. I'm assuming this could be a test. Is there anything else I could do?

I'm going to start this test in "The Edge of Night" adventure with "Terror of Talabheim" following it. His story arc will climax with finding that Steeleye's was involved with his family's death when his was a child. I'm not sure if I want the test to connect story lines or be seprate. I'm thinking seperate.

I just thought I would post to try and bounce some ideas off you guys.

Thanks in advance.

i never had a grey wizard in my group but one of my players is an amber wizard and we just read the magic source books and discovered that everytime the wizards rises in ranks his staff his taken away from him for a short time to add attunement or charms to it.

in our case the wizard will have to get the charm that comes onto his staff for the acolyte career in the woods from an appropriate animal. that also wors.

i woul get the story lines together as the palyers really enjoy being made part of a already existent story!

I narrated that the PC was not really "the next rank" until properly reviewed and invested by the College.

This involved demonstrating their competence (make a Spellcraft or Channelling check) where how well they did, boons, banes etc. would then narrate into getting a nicely improved attunement item, being given a dogsbody job (here's a corrupt artefact to take to some location in hopes that can cleanse it), etc.

Nothing was structurally set out etc beyond the first bit about "college needs to review you".

Essentially, using the nice warhammer system's dice pool to create a story on the fly from all the different possible pool outcomes.

I am currently running a handful of connected episodes very much related to this exact topic, so I figured it would be a good idea to throw in my two brass coins here:

Seeing that adventuring apprentice wizards typically are out on some mission from their College, I decided to devote a few sessions to this before starting a proper campaign. This mission constitutes a practical exam that he has to pass in order to undertake his theoretical exams needed to graduate, and the first part of this mission consists in finding a reliable and competent adventuring party to join.

Before our 6th episode, the player was handed a "secret" letter from his master, briefing our young apprentice on the details of the mission's next phase. Upon completing the mission itself, he will be awarded with a reasonably powerful artefact, then he will have to write and send a report regarding how the mission went. Then, I intend for him to recieve another letter when he's approaching the end of his career, approving his report and calling him back to Altdorf to complete his other exams and hopefully graduate. This latter part will not play out as a proper episode, but rather during some kind of downtime, spanning a month or two in game terms. Then, by the time we pick up the thread, he will have graduated and trasitioned into the Acolyte career.
