open world - good idea?

By Nephtys2, in WFRP Gamemasters

hey all!

my players asked me for a new approach on playing in our next campign. they want to have an open world style

is that a good idea? it is doable? i already have alot of little scenarios and sidquests that i can use, but i guess for something that great i'd need even more…

it should be taking place all over the reikland, i think that is a decent size so it doesn't get out of hand.

but still i think i need a main quest somehow. mine would be centered around skave, since we never touched them in 3 years of playing. but how to do it? i was thinking on certain triggers for the quest to ocme forward, for expample having to visit certain cities at a certain level or several times before the quest occurs, maybe they have to be favoured somewhere first before they get certain quests

so, do you think prepping for something like that would be too massive or can it be done?

appreciate any input!

greetings
neph

An open world campaign must be centered on your PCs. They should have a detailled background with many relations that will have their own objectives.

The PCs will have their own motivations, so that you can start the game session just by saying: "it's morning, you wake up, what do you do today" and let the players act.

So if you want the campaign to be around skavens, you need the PC's background or their relatives to be entangled in skaven plots. Have you read "Terror in Talabeim"? It is a very good campaign setting aronusd a skaven plot that can eaisly be transformed in an open world campaign.

thx for the input. gonna go and read that asap
