Talent Purchases

By Sinkaro, in Game Mechanics

I apologize if this seems like a dumb question, but it didn't seem like the answer was directly in the book… I may have been sidetracked by how much information there is to absorb, though.

How do you purchase talents, in gameplay or character creation?

Short answer is - by spending XP.

:)

Longer answer is that each career has a number of specialisations, plus there are such things as "univeral specialisations" which are not associated with a career - i.e.: Force Sensitive Exile.

At character creation you get to pick one career and specialisation for free, then can buy additional specialisations with XP. You can also buy additional specialisations after character creation, again by spending XP.

Each specialisation has a talent tree associated with it. This displays the list of talents for that specialisation, and the costs (again in XP) associated with purchasing each talent. You buy talents form any talent tree associated with any of your specialisations, either during character creation or afterwards, by spending the appropriate amount of XP. Talents in the top row of the tree cost 5 XP, in the second row 10 XP, in the third row 15 XP, etc, and you can only buy talents that are in the top row, or connected to a talent you have already bought in the tree.

Make sense?

Yes. Most of that I got already. But I wanted to verify that the cost associated with the talent/tier of the specialization tree is the blue numbers on the side. That clears things up nice and dandy. :)

Just to make sure I understand it perfectly, though, I can only purchase talents in higher tiers if they're linked to previously purchased talents, correct?

AND, it goes "both ways". Another point of confusion some people have had. You can purchase "sideways" or "back up" to a lower cost talent on the tree, too. Basically, any of the "first row" 5xp cost talents you can get without a prerequisite. Any others you buy have have a direct line on the tree to another talent you already possess.

And man did I misinterpret that rule at first. there was a character in a playtest that bought row 2 talents because he (and at the time we) didn't think there were any reqs for them, so do it.
