Star Wars: Edge of Empire v. Warhammer Fantasy Role Play

By MechaBri.Zilla, in General Discussion

Not sure if this has come up before, but from what I can see Edge of Empire looks like it will be using similar mechanics to the Warhammer FRP game.

For those of you who have played, how similar are they really? Specifically, I played a little WFRP, and in my admittedly limited experience found it to lack the character customization that I love, and felt like it was extremely deadly for the characters.

That said, I want to stress that my experience with WFRP was very limited, so I may have missed out on some of the things that would have added more customization, but I'm not sure how you get around how dangerous that world was.

It is very similar to Warhammer, but now that you mention it the character creation is not. The dice mechanics, combat, initiative, force pool, and other things are very similar to, or version 2.0 of Warhammer. The character creation of FFG Warhammer is NOT being used in FFG Star Wars.

What about the lethality of the game. I seem to remember WFRP as being a deadly game for the players. Is SW:EoE the same.

I can't speak to WRFP3e, but combat in EotE can be dangerous, particularly if the opposition is using blaster rifles or carbines, as a couple of hits will result in an unconscious PC. Even thugs with blaster pistols can be a threat to non-combat PCs, though it'll take a few more shots.

Note the unconscious part, as actually winding up dead in EotE requires a critical hit with a result of 150+ on the crit roll, which is pretty hard to acheive on your standard percentile unless that poor schmuck is already suffering from an excessive number of critical hits already.

Good to know.

I like the dice mechanic from WFRP since it allows for non binary results, but the lethality of the game was something that surprised my group. Sounds like EoE is trying to straddle that line by making combat serious, but not necessarily deadly.

WHFRP was very lethal. Combat could kill in a couple of hits even for a warrior.
And if the combat didn't get you disease mutation or good old insanity surely would.
I can see EotE PC's looking for force fields and flak jackets etc. after the first few goes at combat.

Similar in the way it has the diferent dice types, dice face meanings, and how they work in general. But not enough to be able to use WHFRP dice in EotE (boo hiss as i have to get new dice)

Careers came on cards that listed the advances you could buy before moving on to a new career. Similar-ish to ho you get and move between specialisations. But not as flexible.

Actions (i.e. combat and spell abilities) came on cards and were affected by a conserative vs aggressive stance system. Most rules or effects were tracked via cards or tokens so not much rummageing through the rule book, but a bucket load of tokens and talent cards and party cards and fatigue and recahrge tokens etc. to take care of. Everything at hand but could be more bookkeeping than roleplaying in my opinion.

All in all EotE is like a updated and improved WHFRP system with the tokens relegated to 'if you want' rather than being a must.

WFRP has negative results on "positive dice" - strain or time. EOTE doesn't. This means more "good" dice imposes no further risks, unlike in WFRP.

WFRP base pool is Stat dice + Skill Dice + Difficulty Dice; EOTE Better of Stat or skill, plus difficulty, but with some of the stat dice replaced ("upgraded"). This means smaller pools.

Color and the Dice:

Color is less important in the dice pool, too. The dice basically are dark and light in each size, with Force dice being white. This makes it MUCH more color-blind friendly a dice set than the WFRP3 dice sets. (I'll note that the particular shades used for the X-Wing minis game are, when simulated using http://www.etre.com/tools/colourblindsimulator/ , are still distinguishable.) The WFRP dice have issues with the blue and purple, and the red and green… one acquaintance walked away in frustration when he couldn't tell those dice apart without looking at symbols.

The game also isn't much more blind/visually impaired friendly, but it is more so in a slight bit. Because the information is intended to be transcribed by hand, it can be typed in in the brief format much more easily than the WFRP3 cards. The dice, however, will probably be hard to read. And the die-roller doesn't do totals - it just presents the images. It's nifty, but not adequate for the blind nor visually impaired.

And, as I know that if I demo it at my FLGS, I'll have a blind guy show up (he's a great gamer - but he's utterly reliant upon touch to read his dice). And a couple color-blind folk are likely, too. So, I tend to be a little more aware of the issue than many.

I wouldn't describe FFG Warhammer as lethal, but as debilitating. It was actually difficult for a characer to die while it was easy for him to get knocked unconscious or have permanent injuries/insanities/diseases.

Would it be easy to port parts of Warhammer 3e to EotE? Thinking of things like social system from Lure of Power. Note I own EotE Beta but not Lure of Power or any Warhammer 3E stuff so don't know if this is a good idea or not.

I did not get Lure of Power, but I would assume the main task for a conversion to FFG SW would be converting the dice.
