Buying Advances

By Grimmlock, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hi,

I bought the Rulebook a long time ago and since I really want to give it a try and play the game, I finally got the time to read it.

After the first parts I started to create a Test-Character. Everything worked fine until I was about to spent my first 1000 XP.

Awareness seemed to fit my character so I wanted to pickt that. Than I saw that Space Marines already have Awareness on "trained".

So here is my question:

Do I buy the Awareness (or any other) advance, just so I can get the +10 and +20 version later on or can I skip the "Awareness" advance and start buying the upgrades for that on the next rank?

Really confusing for me so I'm looking forward to your answers.

Thanks in advance :)

No, you need to buy the Awareness +10 to get that bonus.

What you're seeing is how the book is "future-proofed." You should notice that the general advancement table contains many of the skills/talents a starting marine is trained in. This is to allow for future rule changes that could possibly take away skills like Awareness or Dodge away from a starting character, without hindering that character too much.

Basically, if you start trained with it, ignore it on the advancement table.

Thanks for the quick answer.

So ignoring "Awareness" and than later just buy "Awareness +10" (what my first thought was) is right. Good to hear. Tells me I'm on the right path.

Thanks again and peace out :)

Sounds like ya got it right.

Once you get to the point where you're spending XP, ignore examples that let you buy a skill/talent you already have (except of course for the talents that are intended to be purchased multiple times like Sound Constitution).

Also, it is possible for two different things to offer the same skill/talent. In this case, you can certainly get it for the cheaper price (and once again, certain talents can be purchased multiple times).

Already been told about multiple skills/talents. Thanks.

But yea. I gues if you dont watch out, you get lost in all those skill/talents-tables and a second later, you spent 300XP too much.

I gues i got the hang of it. At least in terms of building a character.

Once I have a basic understanding of the game and its rules. I wanted grap some people and start off as the GM.

Is there a topic about "GM first timer" or so in this Forum? (Since double topics are the worst^^)

Theres usually a few threads floating around in the GM section on the topic. If you have specific questions about GMing though, you might as well just ask them in your own thread (unless you can find a similar question thread).
