Unworkable Prerequisites

By CaptainTrek, in Game Mechanics

Hokay. Basically, the Psyker player in my group was looking over the Talents when he noticed something interesting… Warp Lock (a Tier 3 Talent) seems quite useful, but it has a prerequisite of Strong Minded. Unlike Warp Lock, Strong MInded (a Tier 2 Talent) is tied to the Willpower and Defence rather than Willpower and Psyker, and Psykers don't get the Defence Aptitude. This doesn't seem too bad though, as having at least of the two Aptitudes still isn't too bad.

However, Strong Minded requires a prerequisite as well, and that prequisite is Resistance (Psychic Powers), a Tier 1 Talent a Psyker has neither of the Aptitudes for (Defence and Toughness). Leaving aside from the fact that it doesn't even make sense for Resistance (Psychic Powers) to require the Toughness Aptitude since it's about mental fortitude… this means that even with the updated advancement costs a Psyker has to spend 1,050 XP just to qualify for a TIer 3 Talent that only Psykers can take or benefit from! This really seems like too much and I can tell you that the Psyker player in our group certainly isn't going to be investing that much XP…

I was wondering, then, if you guys had discovered any other unworkable combinations like this… where something very specifically useful (and intended to be useful) to your Specialisation is locked off to you in some way because of problems relating to prerequisites and/or Aptitude problems…

1. The two pre-req talents are good.

2. 1050 xp is not that much. Technically it can be awarded from the module in the book.

3. Given that it takes about half as much XP to get to the next psy rating (a slightly marginal improvement that scales up to 10) 1050 for pre-reqs seems hardly that bad.

What KommissarK said. Pretty much every well-rounded build will have to buy some expensive or medium-costed advancements, such is the nature of the system.

Firstly, any Resistance(anything) is both mental and physical. If a psyker uses Haemorrhage, the power is oppposed by Toughness , which would be aided by Resistance (Psychic Powers). If a character pushes himself to go on while exposed to freezing cold, Resistance (Cold) would help him make the WP check.

Secondly, I'd say the psyker has it pretty good. Most other characters can't fulfill their specialities by taking lots of advancements with the exact same two aptitudes.
