Ratling's Set-up Shot and non sniper weapons

By KommissarK, in Game Mechanics

Do people think set-up shot should be usable with non-sniper weapons?

Have a ratling be the gunner on a tank, and his comrade up at the pintle gun (i.e. able to perform the text of the order), and all of a sudden you have undodgeable battle cannon shots. Hand a ratling a heavy bolter, and you have full auto death thats not going to have its DoSs decreased. Hand a ratling a flamer, and watch as enemies can no longer jump out of the way of getting hit. Hell, watch him throw grenades and nobody notice.

I get that its balanced by a particularly low amount of wounds, but the fact that the only limitation on set-up shot is that its a ranged attack can allow for some "interesting" results.

Now, I hate the notion that ratlings should be pushed into a sniper role, but a comrade order like that kinda calls for it.

I'd argue it can only be used with clearly sniper-style weapons.

With regards to Ratlings being pushed into being a sniper, it is what they do. They are mission specialists who's main offensive action is sniping.

From the strict reading of the rules it doesn't really matter whether a shot from a battle cannon is dodgeable or not, because:

1. The action vehicles use to avoid hits isn't called "dodging", and thus shouldn't be affected by the rule.

2. Against organic targets, Blast 10 makes the battle cannon practically undodgeable anyway.

Well it had more to do if you were on the edge of the blast zone, and able to actually get away. Realize its more of a group thing. Every target in the blast can't dodge. Realize not every battle cannon shot hits dead center, most of the time, you're going to be dealing with a bit of scatter, and the size of the blast being what hurts. The comrade's order doesn't choose a particular subject, it just makes it so the attack cannot be dodged. Flavor wise, all that is required is a half action order, cohesion, and the ability for the comrade to actually fire in the direction the ratling is shooting.

The point of the ability is that the comrade is using a pinning tactic to make the enemies stay where they are so the Ratling can do his job. Though it's more powerful the better the weapon he's using, it's not at all op. Th GM can have enemies with force fields if the fight needs to be more challenging.

Also remember that this is a "Profit Factor" style system. A heavy bolter is "very rare" Making it's logistics roll -40. If the players characters have been fighting long enough or the mission is vital enough to mitigate that, they should be able to be a boss.
