Dodge/parry horde. Frag Granades. Unaware.

By Reclusiarch, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hello!

A few quick questions:

1. Can a horde Dodge and/or Parry attacks?
2. If I read the erratta correctly, hits from explosive damage now creates one extra hit per hit. Does that mean that a grenade with blast (4) will hit eight times?
3. If an opponent is unaware of an attack the attacker gain +30% bonus. Does that mean that a sniper that aim for a round automatically gain +60% with his first shot (+30 unaware, +20 aim full round, +10 for accurate special quality)?

Just want to make sure I got things right. :)

Thanks!

1. For the life of me, I actually can't remember this. I believe the answer is no. A horde can't collectively dodge all the attacks. More important to remember, hordes are meant to be speed bumps and resource burners, not so much the actual meat of the resistance.

2. It is one extra hit per attack , after all other hits have been applied . So if a bolter on full auto scores 2 hits, then that is 2 (from hits) + 1 (from X type damage) + remainder (all those other bonuses I don't want to consider). For your example, a frag grenade (blast(4)), would deal 5 mag damage (assuming the weapon damages the horde).

3. I don't have the modifiers table in front of me, so I'm not 100% if that's the right bonus to be using, but yes, the bonuses would add like that. The important thing to consider is if the target can make a dodge check. which in the case of an unaware defender, is not the case.

1. No hordes may not dodge or parry. Conversly you may not dodge or parry hordes.

2. +1 hit per attack as komissark listed.

3. Yes your modifiers would stack on top of each other up to the +/-60 cap. As long as they are unaware, so take those 800 yard shots or be really good with your silent move skill. Interestingly I've ruled in my games being shot from behind by a non-primitive weapon counts as being unaware for dodging (you can try to dodge the 3rd and higher shot from auto fire though). "By the time you hear the supersonic bullet its already too late to dodge." But this is just my ruling.

Unless you're a Tyrannic War Veteran with 1000 experience to blow, in which case yes, you can parry hordes.

Smurf domination 4 life.

My Tyrannic War Veteran player and I call that ability "I CAN PARRY EVERYTHING". I freely admit that the whole Advanced Specialty is incredibly boss.

I can only imagine the backpedaling and seemingly useless sword motions involved in warding off hordes in melee. I like to think it looks ridiculous when a Tyrannic War Veteran does it, and it deeply disturbs everyone else that such silliness works.

"Seriously, what in the Emperor's name was that?"

"THAT WAS WAR, BROTHER. THAT WAS WAR. GUILLIMAN WOULD BE PROUD."

"Guilliman would be laughing."

"BECAUSE HE WAS SO AMAZINGLY PROUD."

…also, my Ultramarine player speaks in all-caps and has a madness-tinged come back for everything. Really, my group has more fun than anything, I admit it. They're still getting used to the fluff, really. I think we laugh more than we roll dice, it's great.

But yeah, parrying hordes. Dang .

That's awesome, at least he isn't playing Better Than You Smurf, that'd be such an easy route to take.

I'm sorta working on a Damocles Crusade-based Deed available to like 4 Chapters that would allow you to Dodge Hordes, incompatible with taking Tyrannic War Veteran (for the reasons of you can't be in two places at once, and an Ultramarine in Damocles could not have gotten back to Macragge from the Damocles Gulf fast enough to participate in the Battle for Macragge).

Still working on it, would like if Deeds could scale somewhat or give access to a table. I might make Damocles Crusader a flat Advanced Rank 1 Specialty, we'll see.
