Religious Dilettantes

By Nephtys2, in WFRP House Rules

Hey all!

so after a 2 week holiday and with that PLENTY of time pondering about new house rules and stuff to do in my campaigns i came across a thought that i had a few months ago together with the player of our flagellant:

we want her to be able to show her devotion to sigmar through also being able to do minor blessings.

so we came up with this idea, which has probably already been posted by someone:

in an ancient library she found a scroll which detailed the process of an initiate learning the advanced skill of invocation. to gain the talent of invocation she has to speak a self-written prayer to sigmar every night until she sees an omen that he has seen her. this might take about a month of game time i would say. then she will have aquired invocation and would be able to do blessing actions.

she will gain favour not rhough currying, since she did not find a scroll that explained that. so the only way she can gain it will be through being religious and devoted to sigmar. so when she speaks her prayer at night she might get FEL favour. anytime she does something that would appeal to sigmar as a good deed she might get 1 favour.

so she will never be able to invoke more than 1 or 2 blessings a day, but she will have the possibility to gather favour and maybe save it for when she really needs sigmars help.

i'm even thinking that i might grant her the option to turn 3 or 4 favour into 1 sigmar's comet on a dice pool result, to make sigmar's help visible and he has seen her zealous/devoted behaviour.

play testing will start this weekend

any suggestions? is it too much power for a flagellant?

It seems simpler to me to allow the character to take up Initiate career, using fluff to hand-wave aside the normal requirements (on understanding that means accepting consequences of being an unsanctioned worker of blessings) but still apply the core rules on the subject.

As a "not starter initiate" I believe that means paying for all the assocaited skills not getting them for free (not sure).

I would regard that as the "warrantied" version of handling it.

Otherwise, if you feel you have a better way at your table fine but no warranty on it.

the thing is that the zealot does not WANT to be an initiate, a zealot is a very fanatix believer but not with the intention to become an actual priest. and alot of the zealots skills might go lost through that…

You call then but in my setting then he would not be getting blessings period. It's a "looser feeling" set of rules but I would say the same thing here as in old edition D&D to a fighter who wanted to cast spells but not multiclass. In this case there is a strong Warhammer sense that you have fanatic priests and you have flaggelants and zealots but you don't have miracle-working flaggelants per se.

it's not necessarily wonder working that i want her to be able to do. i want her to be able to do some minor blessings, nothing more, as with the system we thought of there also not alot more possible

and there are some "blessings" with the sigmar trait that are not actually wonders per se but a sigmarite way of battling, and that's what i want her to have access to too
