First Adventure

By Pallomides, in WFRP Gamemasters

Our club is running a Warhammer Battle campaign game at the moment. The scene is set in the bloodlands where General Aloise Condor has been sponsered to establish an imperial outpost in oder to help the magical colleges gain access to the long lost secrets. (Fozeriks Tower)

Because the detailed events that have taken place during spring and the beginning of summer I found this to be a rich setting. All my players also play in the warhammer campaign. I have set the following scene for my very first 3ed WHFRP game:

The heros are part of an imperial battle group consisting of various artillery units on thier way to fortify Castle Grimfang. The route however is across a steep dangerous pass, with sheer cliffs going up and down. After a gruelling journey up the pass the wagon train comes under fire from Stone chukkas & goblin suicide bombers. Lucky for the imperials the schooting had started to early and they only lost 2 wagons while the rest of the wagontrain was still in a blindspot. There is still danger from the suicide bombers and the wagontrain is stuck on the pass. Capt. Bregosconi rekruts 4 volenteers to go and scout out the Goblin artillary on the other mountain.

Heros are 1 X hunter, 1 x Swordmaster of Hoeth, 1 X Soldier & 1 Mercenary. One of the perceptive players will have noticed that there was an old ruined bridge back down across the lower end of the pass. As they journey there the will have a fright encounter with a doom diver (getting them used to the dice) Untill they get to the bridge which has been broken in the middle. The heros will have to make a challenging jump, as the last one jumps a river troll will try to catch one of them as they jump and then pelt the party on the bridge with large riverstones.

On the way up to wards the peak they will get stalked by a Sabertooth tiger. Later they will encounter a goblin watchpost (with about 8 goblins) and the trick will be to make sure that none make thier escape towards the peak. Finally they will get to the top where they will have to deal with the warmachine crews and a nasty goblin big boss. The reward will be finding a wagon (incl. ponies) with 6 big barrels of premium Nulner Lionbrew beer. If the battle is going bad for the gobbos the boss will run away to go and get a mob of orcs nearby thereby opening the scene for the next game. Escaping off another steep mountainpass with a mob of motivated orcs in persuit.

I am going to keep the plot simple & semi linear at first in order for us to get use to the system. I hope they enjoy it because they (including me) are all old Rune Quest players. And when it comes to good, simple, realistic roleplaying rules; Rune Quest still ranks as one of the best RPG systems out there. IMHO

Interesting, for a combat-heavy game your players will need the right character choices (do I smell Sigmarite priest, Bright Wizard, Trollslayer, etc.)

A little social encounter would show how system handles that - whether has simple as dealing with a quartermaster to see if you get some useful supplies (superior gear, healing draughts), and you can have environmental checks/travel obstacles as well (the free dwarf adventure on FFG downloads page may give ideas).

Sounds like a great plan. What are you going to do if they fail the jump across the bridge?

How about if they are seen by the goblins and the goblins sound the alarm?

Since I am going to run this game the pulp fiction & grimm & perilous style, (my players know & love me for this style) my players know that the game is deadly. I wont hang the game up because of a dice roll. The bridge will be easy to jump & I will still allow a reaction roll if some one fails. Its more about the river Troll who would be quite happy if he could at least eat one of them,.

In all my years of running games I have discovered that the players need to know that they can die in any combat, & that there are consequences for the decisions they make.
