"Extending" Careers.

By Crazy Aido, in WFRP House Rules

I don't like the fact that a career is finished in ten advances. It makes it... I don't like it, Ok? I think if someone wants to stay within their career for a little longer, they should be able to do that.

My current fix is:

After completing a career's ten advances, a player may choose to spend one advance to stay within that career for another four extra advances. They must then choose a new career to advance into. A player may not spend experience between these two advance stages to purchase an attribute increase.

Essentially this compels a player to either a) fill out the rest of their career advances or purchase an attribute. Obviously, the standing rules on attribute advancement still stand.

Opinions, analysise and fixes other people have used?

There was talk of this sorts early on in the forums. I think the conclusion was to allow people to simply finish the career but allow the player to take the same career at rank 2. This allowed players to keep their character the same yet still be able to increase training ranks and such. Obviously careers like wizard and slayer do not need to use this rule, since each rank is provided a new career sheet for essentially a more powerful version of the same career. I had a rat catcher player however who just wanted to stay a rat catcher at rank 2, so this worked for him.

I like this idea! I've been pondering what to do once my Ironbreaker ranks up to Ironbeard. It seems to me that he would naturally stay an Ironbeard, as that is the pinnacle of dwarfen defensive combat. I could see a transition to Thane, as that would be a societal Promotion, but after that... not many more places for him to go. Being able to take the same career again would be awesome, and you would have the drawback or trade off of not being able to get a new career ability.

We just let them keep going and grant the title: MASTER. This should grant some token ability such as a bonus skill specialization (which would be the equivalent to most career abilities).
