Disguise, anyone?

By LETE, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hiyas, battle bros!

Quick question: Where's the Disguise Skill? I see it in the DW Core's Character Sheet, but can't find it in the book itself...

Is this a mistake or does this mean that this Skill isn't used in the game?

Thanks!

L

Hiyas!

Got a reply from FFG: There ain't no Disguise Skill in DW - d-uh!

I never noticed. Makes sense for marines though.

That does fill in a little blank, with their +30 starting fellowship they are naturally better at disguise than even a Hive Worlder in DH... if the skill existed for them at all.

Hard for a 7-8ft tall hulking monster of a person with a super wide face and massive oversized barreled chest to look like anything else than what he is.

Space Marines wouldn't get many opportunities to use disguise even if it were available. Only time he'd ever get to convincingly disguise himself is when he's hanging out with other astartes or with traitor marines. Even in these situations the observational abilities of fellow Astartes would likely out him before any time anyways. Astartes don't look like taller more muscular humans. The changes their body went through alters their physiology significanly. Their whole proportions change, which is one of the reasons they aren't muscle bound. Best example I can give is the cave seen in the Increadible Hulk, thats about the closest to what an Astartes would look like.

If we're talking about them looking like the Hulk, then all they'll need for their disguise is a decently-cut tuxedo. ...And maybe some Groucho Marx glasses and a greasepaint mustache.

Hi:

It all depends...

On which colour Hulk we're talking about. angel.gif

Of course Legion had Space Marines blending in with normal people... however this did seem to due be some sort of high tech perception altering tech, so may not be justification in itself.

In the novels that generally involve Marines running around trying to blend in with people (The Outcaste Dead and Legion) most people assume at first glance that they're gene-enhanced and augmented with vat-grown muscle. Those who eventually figure it out have all to my recollection been experienced soldiers.

I'd imagine, like so much else, giant brutes like that aren't common in the 'modern' Imperium, though worlds where it is, and those where humans have adapted to be bulkier than the norm (like Catachan), and maybe places with lots of Ogryns, it'd be possible to blend in to a crowd.

Of course, most Marines will never have the chance to put this to the test. The general mindset found within the Astartes along is extremely adverse to such behavior (the Alpha Legion are the only examples of Astartes commonly using such tactics that I can think of). Within the Deathwatch is the only time I can think of where this would be possible for a loyalist Marine, baring the extremely unlikely.
