Ditching Universal Dice Effect Accounting (2boons/2banes)

By Emirikol, in WFRP House Rules

I just ditched the "Universal Dice Effect" accounting from our game. That's when you get 2boons or 2banes and nothing else is on the card. We found it petty, annoying, and just more unnecessary accounting. We've not seen any wierd effects yet. Any thoughts?

Hm. I would never ditch that since it's one of the effects I love.

When describing the result of a roll, knowing that the character has suffered stress or fatigue or has vented stress or fatigue has a big impact on how the story goes and how the player roleplays the PC. It adds mechanical impact to description, it adds tension and drama. Since you need to count boons and banes anyway to see what happens, why not use the universal effect ?

I've never seen it as a problem at the table, but if your group has issues with it, then it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I would imagine it is fine system-wise. Losing the ability to recover is offset by the ability to gain, so it should balance out.

Out of curiosity, do you as a GM come up with on-the-fly effects for boons/banes/chaos stars/sigmar's comet, or do you stick to what the card says? I think that would be more of an indicator of how much this change would affect your game. If you only stick to the card, then without the universal die effect , rolls may get somewhat flavorless.

I would never ditch it. It is part of what makes "dice hitting the table matter" and it's part of my using the extended options for various other "universal/open possiibilties" from GM Book.
