Confused newbie: Combat breakdown

By dave9au, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Cool, so I'll only take the ROF into account for the initial roll and DOS, capping at the ROF limit.

Next up, ammo types gran_risa.gif

Is it a hit? I thought it was a flat point of Magnitude damage.

"Weapons that inflict Explosive Damage (X) gain a bonus against Hordes, and count as having inflicted one additional Hit per Attack after all other Hits have been applied."

Devastating, in the other thread, was flat mag damage, as is the explosive bonus as per 'future errata.' Storm of Iron doubles mag damage. Dev/Assault squad mode abilities do mag damage. I think that's all that applies straight damage, but I'm probably forgetting something.

Ok. I mainly ask since as you undoubtedly know, one hit can end up being more than 1 Mag especially when talents and Devastating come into play.

So, with (X) type damage, it generates 1 additional hit per attack against hordes, regardless of ROF. So even in the case of the Bolt Pistol, or Bolter as a standard attack if you sucessfully roll the BS test you will achieve 2 hits. Now whether the hits do damage is up to a the dammage being greater than the TB+(AP-Pen).

Ammo types and traits/talents can/will change the amount of damage per hit

Man, these rules. For some reason I thought there was an effect other than Storm of Iron that doubled either ranged hits or ranged Magnitude damage (I know there is a melee parallel to Storm of Iron but the name escapes me). Am I imagining that there's another ranged effect that does this?

I know, they're hard to keep track of. Sometimes it's not a surprise that developers missed a couple of holes here and there.

  • Bolter Drill adds one to the RoF of all 'personal' bolt weapons
  • Cleanse and Purify adds 1d5 hits on a horde with flame weapons increases hits on a horde with flame weapons
  • Unrelenting Devastation adds 1d5 hits after all other hits are applied (though it used to add one mag damage per hit pre-errata)
  • Storm weapon trait doubles the number of hits inflicted
  • Explosive damage type adds one hit per successful attack to a horde
  • Metal Storm Rounds for bolt weapons have the Blast (2) quality
  • Storm of Iron doubles magnitude damage (not hits) of autofire weapons and flame weapons
  • Devastating adds one mag damage (not hit) per successful hit

Those are the ranged ones I can think of right now, but that's just from core- there may be things in FF I'm not aware of. It's also totally possible there is another mag damage doubler in there, just not sure what it is.

The melee equivalent to Storm of Iron is Whirlwind of Death...

I think I was thinking of the pre-errata Unrelenting Devastation. Thanks!

Not quite.

Unrelenting Devastation from Errata:

“When the Devastator Marine successfully attacks and damages a Horde with a Heavy weapon, he deals an additional 1d5 damage to the Horde’s Magnitude. This additional damage stacks with any other additional damage dealt to the Horde, such as damage from a Blast weapon or a Flame weapon. This additional damage applies per attack, not per hit (so unless there are exceptional circumstances afoot, it will only apply once per Turn). If the attack deals damage to multiple Hordes, the Marine chooses which Horde takes the extra damage.”

So this is straight magnitude damage. You only get 1d5 if you are using a HEAVY weapon. And it applies only ONCE per attack irrespective of how many hits you get with one or more hordes.

When using a non-HEAVY weapon you get no bonuses.

Missed it, I stand corrected; put UR in the mag damage column, not the hit column lengua.gif
