Lure of Power nobles and Ubersreik (locations and other thoughts)

By valvorik, in WFRP Gamemasters

Others are welcome to jump in with their thoughts/plans for the material on pages 10 to 14 of "Lure of Power, Nobility in the Empire".

I like the additional information about the nobles though would have appreciated a bit more, can live with that.

Graf Tobias Aschaffenberg is the one I don't think I will use, likely taking his role and persona and making him Tobias von Jungfreud and part of the family of Graf Sigismund von Jungfreud, otherwise keeping him much the same. Strengthening the von Jungfreud holdings and role in area makes sense to me as the Graf Sigismund should be an important guy. I didn't like "suddenly discovering Lord Rickard has a more senior family member he's accountable to" as it didn't fit well with my use of him in my campaign. Relatives are fine but ones that overshadow him as a candidate in Ubersreik's political games no.

Graustadt (grey city) isn't placed by the mention it gets Some googling suggests it existed in older warhammer (maybe WFB). Anyone have any ideas? It's not on Glitzman's wonderful map (as far as I can see looking in the region of Grey Mountains, Ubersreik).

Victor von Walfen , Archduke of the Upper Teufel is an interesting addition - in his castle "somewhere west of Stromdorf". This would likely be on the Teufel or overlooking it at least, between Ubersreik and Stromdorf - I would put it on the western bank (with Reikwald behind it). The page 12 diagram indicates he is not related by blood to any of the other major players. This can be explained considering the text with the idea that the family has been marrying "up" into Altdorf and other provinces' nobility not "down" into local nobility.

Heinrich von Bruner , Baron of Graustadt (there it is is again!), Magistrate of Ubersreik doesn't have his relationship to Lord Heissman von Bruner spelled out given that in Edge of Night Heismann is stated to be head of the family. He sounds more important than Heismann then again Heissman has the background of breaking up chaos cults etc. (events before Eye for an Eye ). Heinrich is also stated to be a member of the Ubersreik town council in Lure of Power, but is not listed on the town council in Edge of Night on page 18, and if he was more important than Heissman logically he would have been the one invitated to the Ball.

One connection to make is that Lure of Power says he's an imperial appointed official in charge of justice and Edge of Night says an unnamed imperial judge levying tarrifs on goods down the Teufel triggered the escalataion of Auerswald incident (EoN page 12). Heinrich could have been the judge and this fits with the von Jungfreud enmity in LoP.

Other thoughts, notes on canon or other sources about any of the forgoing?

In my games Heinrich is heissman's younger brother-heissman actually now resides in altdorf where he is a magistrate but he returned for the party in EoN to save face of his family. As heinrichs daughter is now an aschaffenberg, Heinrich himself wasn't trusted to represent the family.

Andreas relationship is not heissmans son but that of the son of another line of the family potentially an unnamed 3rd brother, this would fit with him being ludmilla's cousin.

I wouldnt have Heinrich as the judge of the auerswald incident as that would have him going up against the von jungfreuds directly, whereas I believe von bruners power comes in part by being related to the graf

Heinrich would advise the council on all matters of law and therefore would be a member in that sense

Thanks - brothers! I like that, and thus Lord Rickard's father-in-law. Excellent!!!

Thinking more.

So if they're bothers then we have Lord Heissman von Bruner - (wife unknown), with 3 sons - eldest not named, 2nd born Andreas (vanished at Grunewald Lodge 6 years ago - at this time he must have been officially adult, say 18), youngest Leopold "just come of age" in Lure of Power (let's say 16 in this sort of time period).

Lord Heinrich who is father of Ludmilla von Bruner (wife of Lord Rickard von Aschaffenberg, recent). In my campaign Lady Agnetha (hugeldal) is sister to Ludmilla so a 2nd daugher to Lord Heinrich.

Heinrich is a Baron of Graustadt and Ludmilla his daugher is a Baroness of Graustadt (wikipedia says in Germany a daughter is a Baroness doesn't mean they're running show), whereas Steirlich von Bruner is Steward of Grauwerk. (grey town, grey works).

If one is then both are cousins to Graf Sigismund von Jungfreud . I would make them true first cousins, by virtue of a mother or father's sister having married the Graf's father. It's a bit odd that Heissman is said to be a cousion of Graf Sigismund but the table on Lure of Power 12 doesn't show the Bruner/Jungfreud connection to be blood based (I'm thinking FFG isn't really keeping track of family trees effectively, Edge of Night says the Eye for Eye von Bruner was minor branch of family Heisman is distancing from, Eye for Eye says it was Heissman's son).

I'm thinking Graustadt and Grauwerk should be in similar area, though Grauwerk is in Hagercrybs and there are no signfiicant towns in the hills. I'm thinking there was a town there near a mine (thus the "works" in name of Grauwerk) but it played out and town has vanished. The titles are still kept as they were among the first titles the von Bruners gained and so have a precedence value (you keep the title of lands you got when made noble rather than switching out for the profitable villages you bought later).

I think there is a mistake in the table on page 12 - as you've mentioned, Von Jungfreud and Von Bruner aren't blood related in the table, but previous fluff has clearly stated they are and the table shows Von Jungfreud and Gregor Schadelfaust as blood relatives when again in the fluff it says Schadelfaust is not of noble birth and has been granted his patent of nobility by the Emperor.

I think these two connections are simply the wrong way round in the table

The lineage of Andreas isn't clear at all - even in Eye for an Eye he is referred to as first son, second son and a distant wastrel relative of Lord Heissman!

So In my campaign, Heissmann and Heinrich have a third brother, so initially Heissman granted the lodge to his nephew, until his own son comes of age, then his niece and her new husband (Aschaffenberg).

If Andreas was Heissman's son, the shame upon his direct family would simply be too great, whereas it is the unnamed brother and his family who take the main brunt, while Heissman and to a lesser extent Heinrich try to save face for the family as a whole.

The fact that Heinrich's son in law (Aschaffenberg) is causing more trouble for the Von Bruner's even if indirectly is causing rift between sHeissman and his brother, Heinrich.

The PCs aren't really directly involved in the politics (at the moment) so I've kept the direct relationships all a bit vague anyway - the common man probably doens't know exactly how the Von Bruner family tree does play out, so as that's the only info the PCs have been able to obtain so far, the fact that the info from FFG is a bit vague helps give that overall impression, luckily!

From reading Lure of Power, Heinrich is Ludmilla's Father while Heissman is her cousin. Graf Sigismund J. is also described as Heissman's cousin. So you have the generation of Tobias A., Heinrich vB., and the unnamed parents of Sigismund J. and Heissman vB.

The next generation are cousins Sigismund J., Heissman vB. & Ludmilla vB., and brothers Rickard A. and Edmund A.

Then the young noble sons are Heissman's Andreas & Leopoldo, and Edward's Maximilian.
