Bringing Back Grim and Gritty: Elf/Dwarf corruption threshold is now 5+T and no disease resistance

By Emirikol, in WFRP House Rules

While bemoaning how broken the swordmaster and ironbreaker characters are, I decided that a big part of the problem is their corruption threshold and disease resistance.

I'm making all race CT's a 5+toughness and eliminating disease resistance for dwarfs and elves.

I'm also allowing dwarfs to gain mutations (elfs still do the insanity thing).

Sounds good to me, it's halfings that are resistent to mutations anyway! ;)

Why is it people think the iron breaker and sword master are broken? The only thing they gain access to that other careers don't is their career item (armor and sword).

I'm forcing the iron breaker to progress so he's first iron breaker and get a gromril chainmail. Then after completing that he can take iron breaker again to get the plate. I also have the iron breaker as an advanced career, so players will be at rank 3 before they get the gromril plate.

IF you have limited the iron breaker cards and sword master cards to those careers for the sake of fluff, then I think you have caused the issue yourselves, because their items aren't that good by themselves.

It's also very easy to pick a few cards and remove them from play if they are problematic in your game.

Our last campaign we had a fully decked out iron breaker who had done everything he could to get the best defense... still combat was no walkover for him. His toughness+soak was 10 normally plus a bit when he used some cards. Even with 12 soak he got challenged. 5 goblins attacking him in one round was 5 wounds (he had around 20 I think). When they met a chaos troll the iron breaker barely survived. The group really needed him and his ability to withstand the punishment.

Swordmaster's not broken: The stackable action cards are broken.

Ironbreaker's not broken: The fact that a dwarf is immune to all other forms of attack is broken when combo'd with Ironbreaker. Since the Chaos Dwarfs and the novel Drachenfels came out, i've been fascinated with the concept of MUTATED DWARFS. Evidently, the staff didn't have access to those products when they wrote wfrp3 ;)

..and I just don't like Elves..so they get the nerfing as well :) (and their "High Magic" isn't a tool for Powergamer/Munchkin/Whiners to say "oh, they should be able to weave together whatever the hell they want, whenever they want..even though the WFB books on elves say that this ISN'T how it's done..but WFRP2 probably went and broke'd it all by making up stuff as they went without thorough playtesting (shame on you wfrp2 writer for making such a bad idea ;)

So, for the swordmaster, I'd have to go through and nerf some cards..or just disallow the dang things altogether ;)

I was personally never keen on the idea of letting players being Iron Breakers and Sword Masters from the beginning anyway. These are meant to be elite warriors, yet to allow them to be played from the beginning they have to be balanced against starting careers.

But then I didn't like what they did to Sisters of Battle in Blood of Martyrs.
