Psychic power damage X

By Rakear, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Greetings.

Have a question regarding the X in the damage formula for psychic powers.

Example 1D10+4 x psy rating.

We have been playing it as ex PR 6: the above would yeild 6d10 +4 damage, and I was curious as wether or not this was correct. I recently picked up Mark of Xenos and noticed Warp Lance was 2d10 xPR, which would yeild 12 dice the way we are running it and it didnt seen correct.

How do you do the above properly?

is it d10 +4 then multiply by pr = total

pr = number of dice +4 = total

or

d10 multiply by pr, +4 = total

I can see mitigating reasons why any of the above forumla's would be correct, but would like a clarification on how its intended to be run.

Thank you.

You multiply the number of dice rolled, as per the FAQ in the errata. Personally I'd run the dice x PR. In the case of 1d10+4 x psy rating, if your PR was 3, I would think it would be ((1d10+4)+(1d10+4)+(1d10+4)). So yes, for Warp Lance, 2d10xPR with a PR 6 would be 12d10 damage. 2d10x6 would just net you more extreme results, you'd be more likely to get 12 damage one time and 120 the next. With the dice multiplier you're more likely to get the averages, which in this case would be closer to 66.

Warp lance is an AT attack, and could, in theory, be dodged. See this thread: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?efid=214&efcid=3&efidt=588343&efpag=0#588723

And the line from the Errata:
Question: Where the damage is listed as 1d10xPR, is that 3d10 for a Psy Rating 3 character, or 1d10x3?
Answer: 3d10.

These are, mathematically, exactly the same thing.

To clarify:

PRd10 is the same as 1d10xPR.

Now, for your example the equation should read:

(1d10+4)xPR, or, in more readable form:

(1d10xPR)+(4xPR)

With PR 6 it should look like:

6d10+24

There is a big difference between 1d10x3 and 3d10. yes the minimum and maximum are the same but with 1d10x3 you are just as likely to do 3 damage as 15 damage. with 3 dice you get a bell curve. this is quite a difference, especialy as you get to the bigger powers and higher PR.

The multiple dice is the correct version.
