Old World Phrases

By Romus, in WFRP Gamemasters

Does anyone have a list of phrases that fit the Empire?

For example, would anyone say "What the hell" or "What in blue blazes was that?" Those don't seem to fit, so what takes the place of those?

I've seen "Sweet Shallya", but would love to have a long list of common used phrases.

I'm sure I've read 'Shallya's ****!' somewhere. Generally through, I'd stick with British swearing. Fantasy Germany it may be, but the tone of the game has typically been British.

There was an "old world slang" pdf doing the rounds for a while, it might be in the LF site...

Yes there a couple of old world slang PDFs from earlier editions, with a slant towards the gutter of course.

Friend of ludwig is halflings, for the emperors who gave them moot. Glow bug is a wizard of light. Snotling, which is a weak goblin, is general insult as in "manners of a...". The generic exclamation of "Sigmar's sausage".

Awesome Alp. thanks!

Only have one, but one of my players said: "I bet on Morrslieb", which he interpreted to be when you let everything be up to chance, in a last desperate attempt.

I really liked the term, sadly we haven't seen any other phrases.

the one i have herd a lot is "Taals teeth" and "by Sigmars hammer"

I've always liked "Great Sigmar's Teats! What the hell is that?"

My favourite is " a few cultists short of a conspiracy " (for being dim witted/not all there, a play on the English phrase about being some pennies short of a shilling).

@James Sparrow: That is why all the names are borrowed from german and not british. Perhaps on some little island in the old world a few snobs are speaking british and thinking they are the best, but that is not the gernal case :)

Sigmar's Heirs is a good resource for the Empire in general and breaks down each province nicely giving 3-5 common provincial sayings.

Examples would be...

1. Stirland Saying. " It's dark over Drakenhof way." ; bad things are afoot.

2. Wissenland Saying. "No more than a stones' throw." ; it was easy

3. Nordland Saying. "A soiled conscience only makes brown britches." : Only the guilty have something to fear.
