What kinds of guidelines should I use for "pickpocketing" scores? Particularly, how much "coinage" or whatever?

Successes equals, obviously, that you succeed, boons equals actual amount.

Dependant on social tier of target.

Job done?

I need coinage amount ideas. Should it be like a month's salary, week's salary? They have that guide that shows what the average mercenary makes (for example).

jh

But he's hardly going to keep it all in his pocket is he?

I'd say a cutpurse earns, at best, a shiny silver or three from his endeavours.

Well, first I would say "goose and gander equal", in that what a PC gains doing this is what they might lose having another do it.

I've only had to deal with if from the PC as victim side.

I use with my PC's, assuming the target is "your wealth", that you lose up 1/4 of your carried wealth, to a max of 20 coins of your tier (e.g., silver tier loses 20 silver even if they're carrying 2 gold and 40 silver). This assumes people "distribute wealth a bit" (which I admit I do when travellling for example, the subways of Paris are notorious). They resist with Observation vs Agility of pickpocket (with modifiers for skill etc of pickpocket), on a Chaos Star and failure they might lose a random non-trivial item (healing draught etc.) or all their coins etc.

Thinking of what I carried in my wallet before the debit card age, I think perhaps around a day's pay. Glancing at some tables for a day's pay I found:

  • Peasant 12b
  • Laborer 1s
  • Innkeeper 4s
  • Artisan 5s
  • Merchant 1g
  • Noble 4g

It looks like a good rule would be just a few coins of your Tier. So you might have:

  • Pick Pockets uses Average (2d) Skullduggery. Opposed by target's Observation?
  • Each Success gives you a coin from the target's tier.
  • A failure with more Banes then Boons means you are caught in the act. More Boons then Banes and you get nothing, but aren't noticed.
  • A success with more Boons then Banes means you double the amount of coins. A success with more Banes then Boons means you get the coins, but the target noticed you.
  • A Chaos Star means another person nearby, perhaps a Guard, notices you in the act.
  • A Sigmar's Comet means your target was holding coins of a Tier above him for some reason, if Gold Tier, triple the coins.

PS: How in the world do I remove double-spacing indents in this forum without using bullets?

To remove double spacing: hold down the shift key when you hit enter.

Now, let's talk consequences if you get caught...

Peasant 12b - probably no consequences of note
Laborer 1s - 5 of his friends (gang) rough you up, you made an enemy
Innkeeper 4s - 25 of this friends (patrons) rough you up, you made an enemy
Artisan 5s - you made an enemy of the guild
Merchant 1g - You're put in jail, lose everything and owe a debt
Noble 4g - You're put in jail, lose everything..and then owe a debt..and then have an adventure to "pay off"

yes?

Something else to consider on a banes or chaos star results. Perhaps you don't get caught right away, but the victim carried very distinct coins. A pocketful of Tilean coinage may have the same value (for simplification), but when you go to spend it...
