Career Transition Requirements

By Romus, in WFRP House Rules

The current rules state that to transition from one career to another, is 4 advancements - 1 for any similar traits and -1 of you are human.

When thinking of how a player of mine would trasition to a Witch Hunter from Barber Surgeon I started to wonder what the lore was on Witch Hunters and how would he join the Order of Sigmar (I may have that name wrong here). I thought that there would have be certain things he would have to be able to do to join the order before becoming a witch hunter, having piety for example, and literacy (education).

So I started thinking, what if transition points actually went to certain skills, or talents that the career demands?

For example, for my player to become a witch hunter:

The order demands study in the holy text and rites of Sigmar

  • Transition point 1 goes to having Education acquired
  • if the player needs 2 points to fully acquire education, due to not having it as a class skill, this increases his transition cost by +1
  • If the player already has Education acquired, then the player gains specialization (Holy Text of Sigmar or something)

From his studies, the character must learn proper rites to Sigmar

  • The 2nd transition point goes to Acquiring Piety
  • if the player needs 2 points to fully acquire Piety, due to not having it as a class skill, this increases his transition cost by +1
  • If the player already has Piety acquired, then the player gains specialization

The character must have a permanent insanity

  • The character either already has one, or during his time in training, the order exposes him to the reality of daemonic artifacts and text and the player acquires an insanity.

If a player is human, he still reduces any costs by 1 (in this case, only humans can be witch hunters)

So anyway, I was wondering if it would be cool to do something like this, or similar (throw in your ideas), with all career transitions. Any feedback or ideas are welcome!

I think that sounds like a great idea. I will deffinately be looking into this for my game.

I wanted to put it as though it was on a card. The "+1 Point" means an additional transition cost to the regular rules.

Witch Hunter

  • +1 Point - The character acquires Education as he begins studying The holy texts of Sigmar, or the character gains "Holy Texts of Sigmar" specialization if he already acquired Education.
  • +1 Point - The character acquires Piety as he learns sacred rites to Sigmar, or the character gains "Rites of Sigmar" Specialization
  • Event - During his studies, the character acquires an insanity (if he does not already have one) as he learns of occult practices, and daemonic creatures of chaos

isn't the normal cost for a non-career advanced skills 4 points to aquire or train ?

and you can only have a specilization in a trained skill ?

and you forgot the -1 on transition cost if you have the dedication bonus for your current career

Yes those are probably the regular rules. I would probably give a cheaper cost for transition flavor

People get sick of reading my posts, but I find the career transition stuff to be a pointless exercise. We ditched it. 10xp and you change. Keep your card. gain a new one. That's it. No fuss. No muss. In the future, I'll be making it 12 however as 10 was pretty quick (9 for humans).

The barber surgeon wants to be a witch hunter? Ok, make it so. The player just needs a good explanation.

I don't allow early career change however and people don't get "free specialization training in any skill they didn't train at creation."

I think this kind of thing is a cool idea. I'm trying to avoid too many house rules at the moment to allow my players (and myself for that matter) to get a better feel for the game and its flow. Typically, I won't add anything significant until it has proven to be problematic. What is "broken" for some groups on here simply hasn't come up as an issue ( so far ). That isn't to say it won't, it just hasn't yet.

All that aside and back to the point, I like the idea of requiring investment from a character perspective toward certain transitions. What you're doing here seems to add a systemic method toward that transition. Well done.
