Player wants his character to be an initiate of Solkan in a party of rogues

By Emirikol, in WFRP Gamemasters

Solkan, Alluminas, and Arikanka are the WFRP1 "gods of law."

Got a new player coming in who desires to be an initiate of "Solkan" b/c he saw it on the internet.

Current party is all rogues (charlatan, charlatan, smuggler, and scout).

Is this just another case of the cliche of the person who creates a paladin in a party of assassins and doesn't 'get it' or should I entertain such an idea seriously.

Thoughts?

It seems to me that Solkanites are/were highly allergic to all and any cults of Ranald and those things associated with Ranald. Maybe he's not read everything about them, only a short description? If so, might want to educate him completely.

Unless he wants to play a hostage of the rogues, with very little to do except be blindfolded and feel a cold edge to his throat, I would have him reconsider :)

To me, it means turning the entire session/campaign/group away from whatever you're trying to achieve, towards dealing with a thorn in your side as a group. Meaning you're delaying the entire story for the ego of one. I wouldn't do it.

Since when the hell did you let your players tell you which gods are where?

Whelp... I'd let him, though I'd be more inclined to just give him an initiate of Verena, because you do NOT need the greif of coming up with an entirely new church heirarchy. If your players are good, (and they sound like a good group) then they'll take the opportunity to run rings around the poor sod.

Oh, I have zero intention of developing the church, etc. I told him it's a dead god that doesn't grant blessings. If he wants to espouse things through a zealot or spell-less priest, that's no big deal and it's up to him to do that (same thing if someone was going to be a priest of handrich).

It just seems odd to be a chaos-smasher in a party of rogues.

jh

I used Solkan as an aspect of Khaine in my games... gran_risa.gif

edit: But yes. It smells a lot like he is trying too hard to stand tall in the crowd. If LF9 and the article about probl... Ish! Did I say too much.

I can see an end-game playing out where he's a mole, gaining their trust over the course of the campaign only to sell them out to a plot development in the long run~

I think it probably partially depends on how the other players plan to play their PCs. The Scout and the Charlatans don't have to break the law. The smuggler might have broken the law in the past, but perhaps only to avoid certain taxes because they were unjust/unfair. I would suggest having the group discuss the issue, and see if the group can work out a group dynamic based on the PC personalities. Sometimes players come up with some great ideas for their own backstory by interacting with or hearing about other PC backstories, and they end up helping to tie all the PCs together into a group for you. I find it helps avoid the "you are in a tavern and someone posted a notice looking to hire adventurers" syndrome. Let the players work together to 'write' the story of how they came to meet and start adventuring together.

I know I'm very, very late to this thread, but for the benefit of anyone coming digging through these archives in the future, I'll leave my two cents (adjusted for several months of inflation):

Let him play an initiate of Solkan. He knows that Solkan doesn't exist in Third Edition's version of the Old World, and that no NPC has so much as heard of him, so when he's burned at the stake shortly after he starts preaching his heretical creed, he'll have no one to blame but himself.
