Any info about mental asylums in the warhammer setting?

By dosan, in WFRP Gamemasters

I want to make an asylum , that is in a way run by shallyans from Bretonnia, in the Empire. Dont know if it is against any politics, just want to create an asylum, but dont know where to take the inspiration from.

I know that they used to be quite gruesome in the middle ages , and even in modern times, but, if somebody has any idea, especially in the Warhammer setting, i am all ears!! Mostly i want to show the misery of the people insight, but also, want to show that the caretakers are not monsters either.

There is the famous Frederheim Hospice (WFRP1: Apocyrpha Now, I think it was released by BI as a pdf but can't find it). According to Beastmen Armybook it was raided and destroyed (which is either going to happen or happened already at WFRP3 timeline).

Other than that I would recommend you to check out Asylums in Call of Cthulhu RPG setting. There you could find a lot of interesting information.

Frederheim hospice can be found in scribd

Frederheim and its associated asylum is also mentioned in "Sigmar's Heirs" (Reikland province section). Warning if you consult earlier edition stuff it says Frederheim is north of Altdorf but in 3rd Edition it's actually on one of the maps in book and that shows it south-west of Altdorf (of course maybe something about an asylum means map-makers are always putting it wrong place). Asylums are supposed to be rare, I can't quote source but I think Frederheim is supposed to be the only "real one" (e.g., only one not just the equivalent of a room you keep Auntie in to hide her away).

An early edition beastman army book has a snippet in it about the Frederheim Asylum being overrun by beastmen at some point.

I believe there's also an asylum in Marienberg ("Sold Down the River") though that doesn't contradict the idea that Frederheim is one of the few, perhaps the only officially sanctioned, asylums in the Empire since Marienberg isn't in Empire.

There's also a (excellent!) scenario that takes place in what you call an asylum (?). It's called "That Way Madness Lies", and you can find it here:

thanks to all for the answers, especially the link to the strike to stun site! REally want to do it right for my group, although still want to have more info about the mental asylums in real life medieval age! :)

There are prices for time in asylums in Liber Fanatica 8.
