I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with coverting the rules for tabletop. We love the game but have no way of knowing how -28 meter move can be translated using models. If we go straight to inches it seems to be too much in some cases. We very much would NOT like to use the actually 40k tabletop rules as we have all pretty much learned to hate that game after 15+ years of insanity. Does anyone have a better alternative?
I would like to ask some help with using minis in the game.

As the stats and mechanics are now, you really can't have a workable tabletop system that covers everything. When you have an Assault Marine or other fast character that can cover 50 meters or more in a turn, not to mention some of the ranges on weapons, you're looking at some pretty big distances that you need to account for. But if you scale up so that an inch equals more than 1 meter, you'll have trouble accounting for when someone makes a sidestep. It just can't be modeled accurately (at least, not easily; maybe 1 meter in-game = 1 millimeter or something).
Personally, I use a battlemap and abstract movement. If I show a group of Tau that are about 100 meters away, and a character moves 20 meters toward them, then I just move that token about a fifth of the distance there. I keep track of the distances myself so I know when someone is in range or not.
If you wanted to use tabletop-style movement, you'll likely have to scrap the given movement and range stats and use your own, something closer to the TT game so that characters move so many inches, weapons have ranges in inches, etc. Good luck trying to balance those out, though.
Thanks Brand- That helps me out. It sounds like I may have to do it your way for it to make sense. It was just I was having flamers shoot halfway across the tabletop- LOL.

LOL Some of the flamers have decent ranges (for flamers), but if they're making it halfway across the table then you're gonna run out of space when someone breaks out the really long-distance weaponry.
Although, I suppose 1 inch/meter could still work if you had a nice, big backyard that you could convert into a battlefield...
Well, without using a map, most of our firefights have been at ranges of 30m or under. Given the height of the minis, I would say one inch for 2 meters is best.

I dont know why, but I figured out that if a TT model is 1-1/8 inches and is about 2.5 meters tall that it would probably be best to use about 1 inch = 2.5 meters wheen using a TT model. Also, this means a flamer will be closer to 8 in.
i get bored easily
