Weaving the published adventures together (tips sought)

By Evilref, in WFRP Gamemasters

I've been looking at and pondering how to weave the published adventures together into a campaign, probably intermingled with some of the better pre-3rd ed adventures.

My current thoughts are:

Eye for an Eye -> Edge of Night -> Witch's Song -> Gathering Storm

Interspersed with those will be Three Feathers, Noblesse Oblige and probably another 2-3 smaller 3-4 session adventures or stories.I don't have a wizard so Winds of Magic isn't on my radar at the moment (though might come up as one player has a wizard as a back-up). Horror at Hugenol with a revved up plot is a potential as well.

I'm also playing with the idea of moving to run Power Behind the Throne after Gathering Storm. I'd run through Enemy Within up to the end of DotR with this group (we'd burned out on 2e's combat and the miss-parry-dodge repetitiveness) and, while the above would need some rework for PBtT's story, it should fit in reasonably well and is the best of the series arc.

As for the tips, I know I'm going to have to heavily rework Edge of Night in order to get a better fit and flow for the conclusion. I might tweak the skaven into cultists, though it's also tempting to leave them there as they'd be a nice variation for the campaign.

I''m particularly looking for any advice or tips from those who've worked the main adventures together, how they did so, what tweaks they made and so forth.

I plan to run: Eye for an Eye -> Edge of Night -> Horror at Hugedal -> Terror at Talabheim (2nd edition).

My idea is to have the Skaven manipulating the cults of Übersreik (and to make the PCs find one of them in EoN, instead of the Skaven). When they find the note from Dr. F at Hugedal, they will track him to Talabheim, where they will meet the Skaven and Dr. F (the Skaven mastermind behind the plot of TaT)...

Hope it works. We just started E4aE. I'll keep you posted on the details...

I find it long-winded to let the PC from Übersreik to Fauligmere near Marienburg and the back to Stromdorf. Übersreik and Stromdorf are practically neighbors, so why the detour? But that's just a thought.

Another thought: You don't need a wizard to run Winds of Change. Just send the PC to Altdorf with a messange or a package for Hermann Gratz from a relative or a loved one who the PCs befriended on their way somewhere. Or maybe one of the PCs knows the Gratz family from back when he was young (in my group I will have a PC to have had a crush on Hermann's sister, before he became adventurer, and she will beg the PC to bring her brother something). So on arriving in Altdorf Hermann's teacher tells the PCs that Gratz is missing. There you go. Just another thought.

I am connecting the dots between the various adventures into a sort of sandboxy spiderweb kind of thing. So far it's looking like a political game of intrigues between the various noble families; mainly the von Jungfreuds, von Bruners, Aschaffenbergs, von Sapopnatheims and von Holzenauers (and possibly the von Wallensteins of Auerswald) as the main movers and shakers.

On top of this is another level of power struggles with High Elves, Skaven and possibly Dwarves and Beastmen who all have a staked claim in the general area in and around Ubersreik and Stromdorf.

Add to this the clear and present danger of chaos in the form of the eldritch Order of the Unblinking Eye and the vengeful Gregor Piersson and the stage is certainly set for interesting things to happen to unsuspecting PCs.

The beastmen are drawn to all this power, chaos and warpstone like moths to a flame and indeed several other parties are too; the Cavalcade (Horror at Hugeldal) to name but one.

In general the noble families is after power and influence with Ubersreik as the main price - the von Jungfreuds being the main antagonists and driving force. The Skaven is after warp stone, portend to fall from the sky in large quantities by the greey seer Rasknitt (the meteor in Gathering Storm), the High Elves of course drawn by the nexus (also in Gathering Storm). The Dwarves being opposed to the Skaven but also interested in the supposed treasure buried underneath Ubersreik or even in the very bridge their ancestors built in the city!

This is all still up in the air as I haven't really absorbed the Gathering Storm yet. So far I am very impressed with how everything is falling in place quite easily and how much mileage I can get out of the whole Ubersreik region. Currently I am trying to compile a list of the most interesting NPCs and factions and I've also created a mind-map to reign in the chaos a little.

For those interested in the political side of this there's a great thread that I wouldn't mind linking too if you want.

After all of this I imagine the PCs will be quite tired of the region for a while and will probably save the Witch's song for something completely different.

I have run: A Day Late, A Shilling Short -> Eye for an Eye -> Gathering Storm -> Horror of Hugeldal -> Winds of Change

The main thread (and quest distributor) have been Lord Aschaffenberg and Master Wizard Vant (two magicians in the party) in Ubersreik. The party have been given the Grunewald Lodge as a gift after saving the manor and they havbe now started to rebuild the old keep and they launch their quests from there.

Graf von Jungfreud and his family are also pulling the strings in the background and ask frequently the party to help them and in return get their protection and gold.

No adventure is only based around a single quest distributor or around one party member.

I'd certainly appreciate seeing the thread and/or mindmap if you can link them.

Warning SPOILERS

Started with Eye for an Eye run straight.

Then the PC's were asked by sister Sonja to deliver the hammer to a dwarf stronghold in the grey mountains. Once they arrived the dwarves were grateful and trusted the PC's. As they were trusted they were tasked with finding a missing dwarf.. a few tweaks* to the adventure later and they were off on..

Journey to Blackfire pass

When they returned from blackfire pass they got word from the dwarves that a letter had arrived for them from Lord Ash. He had found some very worrying texts in his library that he believed belonged to the cult, he was going to send them to the pcs via coach... which then was late... which led to

A Date late, a shilling short

In his letter Lord A wanted the PCS to get the books and deliver them to the authorities in Uber. They did this and when there were approached by some merchants who had dealings with lord A and had heard of the party helping lord A. They told them about a merchant that was missing which led to

A Gathering Storm

When they returned with news of the merchant to Uber. they met up with Lord A (and a few other people who had heard of the PCs) and ended up getting into

Edge of Night

I am not sure if this will work, haven't really used dropbox before except as a go-between between my computer and phone:

Let me know if that works. Just bear in mind that the mindmap is far from complete and more of a personal tool than a presentation. Hopefull it'll give some inspiration or the like.

The link to the thread that I have mined for a lot of info:

http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?efid=165&efcid=3&efidt=411294

For what's it worth here is the list of NPC tied to the region that I have started to compile, it's far from done yet though and especially the traits are more of an experiment than anything (also if this violates any copyrights I'll of course remove it):

Andreas von Bruner (noble, gold) -
Eldest son of Lord Heissman and second son of a cousin to Sigismund von Jungfreud. Disappeared (presumed dead) at Grunewald Lodge shortly after moving there in 2520 (was in fact a member of a splinter group of the Eldritch Order of the Unblinking Eye lead by Gregor Piersson, and was subsequently absorbed into a chaos artefact).

von Holzenauer mercenary, adventurer
“Old money”
A landless minor noble family from Stirland; they lost all their lands in the Vampire Wars of the 2000s and are vying for a cleansing of Sylvania at the court of the Elector Count of Stirland, Graf Alberich Haupt-Anderssen (whom they are distant cousins of). Many family members take sacred vows to recover their lost lands or die in the attempt.

Baron Manfred von Holzenauer (noble, gold) mercenary, adventurer
The third son and one of only three surviving von Holzenauers through the male line and the only one who has not taken his family’s traditional vow to reclaim lost land (believes his ancestral lands to be lost and that the family should seek a new home). Has served as a pistolier in the Grey Mountains.

von Bruner infamous, academic
A small branch of the von Jungfreud family and minor noble family from Ubersreik. They have recently been disgraced due to their connection to a chaos cult activity.

Ludmilla von Bruner (noble, gold) dedicated, social
Married to Rickard Aschaffenberg and while fond of her family is fully committed to her husband’s cause and mindful to distance herself from her family after their fall from grace.

Agnetha von Bruner
von Saponatheim criminal, mercenary

Aschaffenberg idealistic, social
A minor noble family from Ubersreik, the Aschaffenberg star is on the rise since the head of the family, Lord Rickard, personally rooted out a chaos cult not far from Ubersreik. By many they are nevertheless still considered little more than up-jumped commoners since their elevation to nobility in the aftermath of the Great War against Chaos.

Lord Rickard Aschaffenberg (noble, gold) Idealistic, social
Lord Rickard is the hero of the hour after he were “instrumental” in rooting out and destroying a chaos cult. While the actual work were done by hired hands Lord Rickard has been quick to capitalise on the victory and has reinvented himself as the very image of a faithful, pious, pillar of the community. He is essentially still a good man and perhaps because of this, not quite as adept at the political game as many of his peers. Lord Rickard were given custody of Grunewald lodge as a dowry when he married Ludmilla von Bruner, until Leopold von Bruner comes of age.

Ludmilla von Bruner social, devoted
Cousin to Andreas von Bruner and married to Lord Rickard Aschaffenberg.

von Jungfreud dedicated, social
A very old and powerful family which control a number of villages and lands all around Ubersreik (including the Hugeldal). Not long ago they were also liege lords of Ubersreik but due to a family feud with the von Wallensteins in Auerswald that very nearly escalated to a civil war their patronage of the city was revoked by the Emperor and Ubersreik given its own charter. Black Rock fortress in Ubersreik is their ancestral home.

Graf Sigismund von Jungfreud dedicated, social

? Matthias von Jungfreud -
Lord of Hugeldal manor in 2514, married Agnetha von Bruner 2519 and died of Ghoulpox in 2520.

Captain Anders Blucher (silver) military, idealistic
Captain of the Aschaffenberg’s house guards and brother to Erwin Blucher. He takes his position very seriously and suffers no fools.

Captain Erwin Blucher (silver) military, dedicated
Commander of Ubersreik’s garrison and brother of Anders Blucher. He is also secretly in love with Andrea Pfeffer and has been trying to court her for years, though she is none the wiser.

Burgomeister Ernst Maler (silver) urban, bureaucrat

Ubersreik Town Council urban, bureaucrat
The council is made up of Burgomeister Ernst Maler and the heads of the town’s leading guilds: the merchants, the Boatmen, the Boatbuilders, the Metalworkers, the Carters and the Carpenters. The chief priests of Sigmar and Verena often attend council meetings in an advisory capacity, and representatives from the dwarf community have a standing invitation to address the council. The council is worried about the possibility of losing power to a new liege lord and letters have been sent to the councils of other free towns in the Reikland, asking for advice and subtly suggesting the formation of a league of free towns for mutual support.

Klaus von Rothstein (silver) urban, specialist
A self-important merchant from a relatively influential family; obstinate, choleric, dishonest are all traits the rest of the world easily associates with Klaus. Klaus on the other hand has a habit of not agreeing with the rest of the world. He is working hard to build his small scale export import business and increase his revenues but no matter what he might believe he is not a major player among Ubersreik’s merchants. His main claim to fame is that his uncle Konrad founded a very successful mercantile guild in Marienburg when Klaus was but a lad

I think it needs to be in your public dropbox folder for anyone else to see/grab it.

Thanks for the breakdown though, that's going to be handy to work with. I'm playing around with mixing some of the short 1st/2nd ed adventures (like Noblesse, fear the wurst etc.) into a drawn out campaign around Ubersreik. Internecine nobility makes for a great framework and motivator.

Haha! I just noticed this thread, and you've done exactly what I've done (and I think using the same tool - Curio, right?)! Even down to copying a zoomed-in view of the Ubersreik from Giztman's map tool!

Great minds really DO think alike!
