silent running on a chainsword

By Hardrainfalling, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

the party i run are about to do a covert op where stealth is key , combat knives and silent weapons only

the assualt marine is rather handy but only has a chainword and combat knife could he turn off the motor on the chainsword and still use it?

if he did what what would be suggested stats? I think i would begin by removing tearing :)

i'd just have the tech-marine or forge master incorporate a stummer into the hilt with expanded battery life.

Yeah, he'd probably just punch his enemies in the face ;)

Couldn't he requisition a Power Sword? Or just stick to the good ol' methods. A marine's punches are surprisingly violent. I mean, the guys who ate my Blood Angel Assault's fury didn't like that. Fury of Sanguinius + Feat of Strength + Swift Attack + good WS = teh sh*t, and really it's priceless to pummel down the baddies.

the party have no access to requistion as they deep behind enemy lines between them the party has to do the mission with no armour , combat knives , 2 clips of stalker ammo (between the party not each) and the librarian with a force sword :)

eventually the assualt marine intends to get a power sword , he hasnt the renown yet

Given that situation, I don't see any options for him. He could use it without turning it on, but it's essentially going to be a big club, and it's not even going to have a particularly good cutting edge. Best use of it would be to simply parry with it (because it'll still have the Balanced quality) and then desrcibe various ways of punching and kicking people to death doing a flat SB+1d10 damage!

Punches, kicks, grapples and the good old combat blade to the guts. All a marine needs.

If he's the only one with multiple attacks, have one of his companions trade him his knife for the chainsword for the course of the mission. Then you'll also get an uncomfortable scene with plenty of RP opportunity while one Chapter hands andother Chapter one of their personal posessions for the good of the team.

Granted the chainsword likely uses an electrical motor (where d'you put the gas in this thing!?!?), which is likely to make a distinctive sound when running, much more so when its cutting into stuff (metal on metal perhaps). When its not on, its a slab of plastic and metal. Chainswords use the cutting motion of the moving chain teeth to do damage, not so much the space marine's swing. (Can't use a chainsword like a normal sword, you'd likely kill yourself too.) Whats the rules for using a wooden log as a weapon? ; )

Improvised Weapon, I guess?

As for multiple attacks, I don't have the book with me right now, but can't you use your fists to do them?

Man, I'd so much like to see Marines go medieval on people with their BARE HANDS...

Not that it would be inefficient, really. 1d10+8 is always a nice kick in your face...

Which means that he would be better off just punching the foe. Or spiting at them.

Totally. As I said, why clubbing to death when you can pummel-bury in the ground to death?

And why even use a knife when all it gives you is +2 Pen.

+2 Pen versus Space Marine kicks to the face.

I know where I stand.

The streetfighting talent would be appropriate for a chapter fond of dirty fighting. I bet there are sneakier chapters who teach it.

What does that one do again? Marines already do 1d10+SB damage unarmed!

It adds +2 to crit damage with unarmed or knife attacks. Assassins and Scum characters in Dark Heresy could get it. Thematically, it is intended for dirty fighting.
