Confused and need advice on books...

By Batei, in WFRP Gamemasters

Hello WFRPers,

I have the Core Box set and the first player expansion. There are quite a few books/sets that have come out since I jumped in at the onset.

What exactly is in the Creature Vault vs Creature Guide? Some new monsters? Lots? Do they come with cards?

I have read a little from the description, but I am not sure I completely understand what is really in the books... they may even be boxed sets. Anyone who has these and the Core set, I would like to know the differences and what benefits there would be in purchasing the new Creature Guide/Vault.

Thanks,

Mike

The creatures Vault is a box with monster standups, cards (creature cards and creature action cards) and bits, no book at all. The Creatures Guide is a hard covered book with information and rules on all the creatures (much of these rules can be found on the creature cards from the vault, but they are elaborated in the guide). So the creatures guide and vault go together if you plan on playing with all the bits, standups and cards.

All the "Guides" are hard covered books, all the "Vaults" are boxes with cards and bits.
All the other products are boxes with both books (soft cover) and cards and bits.

The Player's guide contains general rules released up through and including Signs of Faith and Winds of Magic. The player's vault contains ONLY the action cards, careers, talents, bits, etc found in the core set. It allows you to duplicate components you may wish to own more of and includes erata on the cards...but it doesn't contain all the parts n peices mentioned in the guide. I personally own both the guide and vault. I have the guide in PDF which is awesome and the vault was really only useful in generating duplicates of action cards which I would have most likely avoided if I could do it over again (I would at least recommend abstaining from the vault at first pass-through...you may see more of a need for it than I later on).

The Gm's guide contains the general GM territory rules released up through and including Signs of Faith and Winds of Magic. The GM's vault contains ONLY the chits, bits and parts that would make up the other half of a core set. It allows you to duplicate components you may wish to own more of and includes erata on the cards...but it doesn't contain all the parts n peices mentioned in the guide. I personally own the guide but not the vault. I have the guide in PDF, and after I saw what was in the player's vault avoided purchasing the GM version (I may pick it up later on, but I certainly wouldn't consider it essential)

The Creature Guide has information on all the monsters presented in the core set and then some. It is a great reference for planning encounters without thumbing through stacks of cards. BUT the Creature Vault contains a lot of great data that I would consider essential for anyone planning to create their own scenarios, etc. I personally own both the guide and vault. I have the guide in PDF and the vault is a great companion pile of goods. (Of all the guide-vault combos this one is the most useful...however it has a hefty amount of erata)

If you want the added pieces/cards/etc for magic, religion, disease, corruption, mutation, mounted combat, severe wounds etc you should still pick up Signs of Faith, Winds of Magic & Omens of War. Witch's Song features a couple new careers but that may or may not be worth the price for you.

Thanks k7e9 and Callidon! Your posts were exactly what I needed.

It sounds like the Creature Vault and Guide would be worthy additions to flesh out the Core set with first. The Faith, Magic, and War books to follow in priority.

Take care and happy troll slaying!

That's exactly the order I'd reccomend (you allready had the adventurers toolkit right?). :) So go for it.

Happy gaming!

Yes, I do have the toolkit. Thanks again for the information.

On a side note, I am surprised there isn't much going on at GenCon for 3rd edition WFRP. What is the story behind that I wonder?

Edited for double post!

LOL! Gotta be careful not to hit publish twice.
