Communication in the Empire

By Furlong Doug, in WFRP Gamemasters

Hey GM's

Could use some help on how to handle communications throughout the Empire. I've used in my game traditional forms of communication (i.e. horseback, porters, messengers, etc), but were wondering if there are different means. Not familiar enough with the background to know if something already exists.

(I was actually planning on stealing ravens from Game of Thrones, but then the HBO series came out and now it doesn't seem at all original.)

Particulary I'm looking for a way for a celestial wizard to communicate with his patron in Altdorf, but would be interested in how people have handled long distance communication for the masses.

Thanks in advance.

Karl Frantz is building a line of Semaphores or signaling stations to get messages quicker from one city to the next, you could use those. Read Death on the Reik for more information.

Don't know how much Signalling Devices have expanded in the year 2521. But I think they do cover main cities (Altdorf --> Middenheim, Nuln, Talabheim. Maybe Marienburg too...).

Common ways to sent messager would probably be:

Expensive:

  • Messager Pigeons (or Ravens)
  • Signalling Devices
  • Private Messengers (riders)

Cheap (and slow):

  • Riverboats
  • Coaching Houses (in their wagons)

Special: Colleges of Magic may have their own ways (especially Celestial Wizards) to create communications with Magic.

Terry Pratchett's Going Postal might also be good inspiration for covering how 'Snail mail' and signalling services can work in a fantasy world.

liber fanatica v111 will be covering secret signs....
