[Adventure Playthrough] A Day Late, A Shilling Short

By Luthyr, in WFRP Gamemasters

Hey there,

Played through "A Day Late, A Shilling Short" as our group's intro WFRP adventure tonight. Instead of the default characters, we did random character generation which ended with a Human Apothecary, a Dwarf Coachman, an Ironbreaker, and a Dwarf Ratcatcher. A few comments:

Gromril Armor - This seems extremely beefy, to the point where the Ironbreaker can "tank" a tough opponenet almost indefinitely. During the encounter with the Wargor, the monster kept pounding on the Ironbreaker put couldn't get enough successes since he had to roll 4 challenge dice each time because of the armor properties. In the meantime, the players (even with assists), only got the Wargor down to half-wounds. The Wargor ended up getting frustrated and running off into the woods because he couldn't hurt the Ironbreaker. Is that right?

Ungors - Are these treated as henchmen, in that they share the stats of a single unit? If so, the Coachman's blunderbuss (with "blast" quality) made short work of both groups of them very quickly - leaving the first group with 1 remaining wound and killing the second group outright. Is that right?

Small, But Viscious Dog - Everyone loved the dog.

Cheers!

I don't think it's right.

Armor Defence gives Misfortune dice, not challenge dice to your opponent. So that's 1 Challenge dice + 3 Misfortune dice I think (can't remember the excact stats). Same for NPC/Monster defence, only add Misfortune (black) dice.

Can't really comment on henchmen, never used them.

Yes they're henchman and they each have wounds equal to an ungor's toughness but share one pool. The Blunderbuss is awesomely powerful.

Also, don't forget that a successful attack always does a minimum of 1 wound, regardless of Toughness and armor soak.

Aha! Thought something was amiss! Yup, the defence dice used was incorrect. That makes much more sense now!

Thanks!

The ironbreaker is still broken. Their soak is too high for a beginning character (especially considering that all ironbreakers are essentially going to have a 5 tou and a shield). Here's a house rule we use (because I want people to play ironbreakers, I just want them nerfed back down to mortality):

Ironbreaker (Dwarf only)
• Begins with Gromril Scale (gains reduce pierce by1)
• Career completion grants Gromril Breastplate & Chain (armor gains reduce pierce 1)
• If the career is taken a 2nd time (see advanced themes below), the Gromril Full plate is gained.
Trappings: Cannot use improved dodge in Gromril armor.
Organization: Homeland military unit
Advanced Themes: Artillerist(i), Veteran (i) Sargent(i) and Captain(A). – Ranking up uses the career ability from the mercenary, soldier, or watchman instead of the gromril card again.

My fix is to make Iron Breaker an advanced career. I really like the idea of the iron breaker progression, so I think I'll change it to that.:

Iron breaker squire -> Iron breaker -> Iron breaker veteran

Gromril chainmail -> Gromril brestplate -> Gromril Full plate.
