[Vehicle] 'Crashing' Hords

By TechVoid, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hi fellow Battle-Brothers,

in RoB there is written how much damage a vehicle does to another vehicle by ramming it.

How would you suggest to damage hords? How would you reduce the magnitude if a Rhino or Land Raider races into a Rebel Hord!

Cheers,

TechVoid.

I would think even beastial intelligenced enemies would hear/see the rhino comming a long ways off and simply move out of the way. Either orderly or in mortal fear of being run over. I know the initiative order and Hordes not dodging etc. would seem to preclude this but I think just such an incident would be an exception.

Now if one or more in said horde decided (foolishly) to step in front of the rhino, say to shoot it with a missile, then I'd imagine the same thing would happen to them as would any person being hit by a 40 ton tank.

I would have to say it has something to do with the size modifier. A motorcycle couldn't kill as many in a horde by ramming it as a rhino, and a rhino would hit less people than a land raider.

However, speed is the other factor. The faster the vehicle, the less likely someone has a chance to dodge it. Yes, Hordes can't dodge WEAPONS, bu I'm pretty sure unless they're a blind and deaf mob of angry cultists, they're goign to figure out a tank is coming at them and attempt to move accordingly. But that might be moot as someone should get squished. Requires a bit of thought.

If I had to make a flash decision right now, I'd say 1d10 for how much magnitude you hit, and use the front armor of the vehicle to determine if you bypass the creature's toughness and armor. A death or glory style mechanic to equalize it out might be fun too.

Here's a real quick idea. I didn't spend that much time with the details, but maybe someone feels like picking it up (even though I might have made it a bit too complicated now that I look at it):

1.
The Driver makes a Very Hard (-30) Drive Test to hit the Horde, modified by Horde Size Modifier, Vehicle Speed (+10 for every 20 km/h) and Vehicle Manoeuvrability (+10 for every 2 points).
Hordes that consist of opponents with the Unnatural Agility trait render the Drive Test Hellish (-60). The GM may apply further modifiers based on terrain.

2.
If the vehicle's front armour is 10 or more points lower than the opponent's combined armour and toughness bonus, the vehicle will come to an abrupt halt and take the difference in points as damage directly applied to the vehicle's Structural Integrity.
If the vehicle is not destroyed, the driver and any passengers are Shaken - even though their armour will protect them from harm, the Horde will now have the upper hand in the ensuing combat and attack first once the characters have disembarked.

3.
If the vehicle's front armour is greater than the opponent's combined armour and toughness bonus, the attack will cause casualties to the Horde. Reduce the Horde's magnitude by 1, plus 1 for every Degree of Success, up to a maximum of 5 for Hulking, 10 for Enormous and 15 for Massive vehicles.
Additionally, the Horde counts as Surprised - if the characters disembark their vehicle immediately, everyone except the driver and any turret gunners will be granted a free attack before Initiative is rolled.

4.
Should the vehicle's front armour be equal or up to 9 points lower than the opponent's armour and toughness bonus, the attack will hit but not cause any casualties, instead merely tossing bodies wildly through the air and causing mayhem amidst the enemy ranks. The Horde counts as Surprised (see above).

Hello everyone :)

We're playing Final Sanction with my party and I decided to let them use a salvaged Rhino to roam around Lordsholm. So, when they were trying to win back a capture point, this question came up to us as well.

What we ruled on the spot was that the driver will need to make a ramming action, and if successful roll damage normally (Ram says you deal 1d10 + front armor if moving at half speed, 3d10 + front armor when moving full speed). Then, we only kept the "tens" as magnitude damage. So, for a Rhino, ramming full speed on a Horde, with a front armor of 31, it came out as 3d10 + 31 for a maximum of six mag damage per ram.

Just thought to share :)
