New player, few questions

By Liam Stark, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Hi all. New group of players starting off here, including our GM. I figured I'd come here and ask some vets, since my GM is still learning himself.

I'm looking to start a Librarian. I had a few questions on what exactly I can start with.

I read elsewhere that the starting renown is 0. Understanding this, it is impossible to begin play at level 1 with a psychic hood/storm bolter etc? Game wise, is the Psychic Hood a viable peace of wargear? I'm far from trying to powergame this, although my GM has stated he wants this campaign to be extremely rough on us.

With the Signature Wargear talent...is it possible to begin play with his default Force Sword upgraded? I read in the description of the Librarian he could also start with a Force Halberd, yet I haven't found the stats for that.

Thanks in advance gentlemen.

Yes; it's impossible to begin play with anything that requires Renown (such as a storm bolter), unless otherwise specifically specified. It's a way of making you wait a bit before playing with the big toys. You could not use signature wargear to upgrade your force sword at start-up, as upgrading the quality of items requires that you meet the renown minimums, as stated near the beginning of the equipment chapter.

Thanks for the quick reply sir. Definitely appreciate the information.

Anyone have any info on the Force Halberds?

To my knowledge, nothing official exists. If treating as a two handed weapon, I would go the traditional +1d10, remove balanced from the force sword. The force mechanics should not change at all, and it shouldn't do anything funny like a force staff.

I would use the Executioners Axe from RoB, with a pen of 3, without the power fieldwith the force weapon rules

Cheers,

Anyone else notice that force weapons have a renown for Respected to get? I wonder if its a typo. The Epistolary in RoB get issued a force weapon along with a hood might have been what they(FFG) thinking in the first place but changed their mind to give the Lib some love.

Btw the errata thread metions that the Epistolary doesn't get the force weapon only the hood since the lib gets the force weapon already.

Force Halberd, 2d10+2 R, Pen 2 Unbalanced

As the Force Sword compares to the Ceremonial Sword a Force Halberd should compare to the Sacris Claymore

a friend mentioned a new book comng out soon for rtdh that will have rules for grey knights. i imagine there will be several force weapons in there.
