Saints in Warhammer?

By valvorik, in WFRP Gamemasters

Does the Old World have Saints? I don't see any references in the priest books, though in Gathering Storm there is a Saint Cyril reference and in other places "saint's fingers" as relics are mentioned.

One of my player wants to be an orphan from an orphanage dedicated to a saint and I'm wondering if that fits with canon. I know orphanages are generally Shallyan.

There's lots of saints in the first two editions. Can't think of any in third, though. But I guess your GS ref means there must be.

No real reference to saints that I can think of but there are Venerated souls or sometimes called Pious Individuals.

Martial gods tend to favour Famous Warrior priests in this, while Shayllerns follow the values of estemed individuals of those who have lived before.

Venerated souls form minor pantheons beneath the god to which they followed, and exist for such things as martyordom in battler, hearth fires, and prosperity.

Samples: Brother Shawl Morr; represents the wrongly slain.

Gisela Saaur Shaylla; From the times of the black plague for her petions spared the town of Ferlangen (Osterland) and was killed for her troubles.

Angus the black (Mannan) swam out to see to rescue a whole crew.

There are many others.. Page 95 onwards in the tome of salvation 2ed covers these and more,. Many such souls are often refered to as minor dieties but they are essentially saints.

Hope that helps. Crimsonsun

I posted for more examples of Venerated Souls over to StS and was given this gem of infomation by the user: Hapimeses

You'll find no mention of 'saint' in the Tome of Salvation. We were expressly forbidden to use the term; it was deemed too Catholic, and too 40K (and pains were to be taken to avoid Warhammer appearing as 40K). That's where the 'venerated soul' came from (a poor fix). The title 'blessed' was also introduced to replace saint. So, for example, in the Thousand Thrones the PCs visit the Abbey of Blessed Aethelburt, not the Abbey of Saint Aethelburt. This became the standard in all Black Industries 2nd ed books after the Tome of Salvation, with any uses of 'saint' replaced with 'blessed' or, occassionally, 'venerated soul'.

I'm guessing from what has been released so far in 3ed FFG's have not been so restricted, but I thought you might find it interesting none-the-less.

Thanks Crimsonsun

Thanks, and that clears up things for me as I had seen references to the idea that saying somebody answered prayers, appeared to people etc, that was blasphemy/heresy evidence of chaos-taint at work, Ruinous Powers emplower Chaos Warriors etc, gods don't do that stuff etc.
