Using miniatures and a grid

By qcipher, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

What would be the recommended scale for standard table top figures? Using a Move action you can move your Agility bonus in meters. Should each square be considered one meter then? That seems a bit small to me, I'm used to 5 feet per square, or 2 meters per square when using meters. Just checking if people have used this option and how it works.

I think there was a thread on this very recently, but coud have been in the DH forum.

The best way will be to adjust the range per square per situation.

If you are engaging something at 300+m you will have to use other grids than you do when everything revolves around melee combat.

I think for the game that I run the best thing I could come up with was a grid for close quarters (1m/sq) and a second "map" that was more relative for longer ranges since I have people who prefer lots of range AND those who want up in the thick of things.

Admittedly we do everything with miniatures an terrain (rather than a grid) but we’ve found the best measurement is 1” or 1 Square to 2 metres. We tried 3:1 for a while, but working out the math quickly was a pain, especially when most things in the game divide in half very easily. Any time we have something that has a remainder we just round up. So, people who move 3 get to move 4, and Blast 5 weapons technically become Blast 6, but it speeds everything up rather nicely.

Plus we have more fun doing everything with miniatures. Everyone gets to build their character – literally – and then use them as they please. happy.gif

The system was designed around a 1m grid (which is why you have to be within 1 metre of an enemy to be in close combat). You can increase the number of metres per square, but it does get slightly more complicated, and things don't work quite how you want them to.

Personally I would only use a grid when the combatants are within about 50 metres or so. The rest I would do either narratively, or keep track of on a scale map. The specific details of how far apart people are matters less when you get further than that anyway. The only reason that it is more of an issue in Death Watch is that long range gun fights are much more common than Dark Heresy.

For most scenarios I represent that one square on the grid equals one square meter to keep things simple. If my players are being bombarded from something in the distance, I keep it off the grid until I actually have to represent it like if an assault marine were to charge the heavy weapons teams that have been bombarding the kill team from 200m away.

There is a sidebar somewhere that says 1m = 1sq. My DM has run everything from that to 1sq = 100m with heavy narative. It just depends on the encounter.

Right, I eventually found the sidebar. I'll stick with that as I don't have to do any conversions, but the maps will then get pretty big. No biggee, thanks for the responses.
