Servo-Arm = Pen 10? Seriously?

By player1536185, in Deathwatch Rules Questions

I found it odd when NPCing a techmarine character today that the servo-arm is so godawful powerful and has the same armor pen as a lascannon. The bulky raw damage I can understand, and I could also buy it having that sort of pen if it was hydraulically crushing something after a successful grapple, but it seems extreme as-is. Checked the errata for it and found nothing.

Has there been a discussion already about how apparently weird these stats are?

Main concern was multiple attacks.

Here is another one regarding using it as a uber grapple reaction:

For what it's worth, the amount of damage a kill team pouts out, the 2d10+14 pen 10 is only scary very early on. Remember it's hand to hand only, and it'll be outshined by a power fist in short order.

Yeah, you're right, from a balance POV it's not so crazy. I just had a problem with justifying the stats of the arm regarding armor pen, considering it's not a power weapon or anything. I really don't know how you justify what's essentially a powerful club being able to punch through armor.

I know in Table Top that the servo arms are baiscally used like a power fist, which might explain why. A power fist has pen 9 in DW.

Just imagine the crushing grip as a part of the attack, sort of a reverse of the Bulkhead Shears.

Put someone in the Deathstar trashcompactor an ask him about the Pen! Same Song!

in DH ascension, its 2d10+12 pen 2.

It is also attached to a Techpriest, who while likely tougher, stronger, and more solidly built than a majority of mere humans, is likely to be somewhat dwarfed by a Tech Marine and lacking a correspondingly dwarfing power source that gives the Tech Marine's Servo Arms their upgunned ability to crush its target like a bug.

At least, that's the BS I'd use to justify it.
