So... how do you get a Wolf Helm exactly?

By H.B.M.C., in Deathwatch Rules Questions

Table 3-6 on Page 147 of Rites of Battle lists the three new types of Armour available to Deathwatch PC's (outisde of the various Marks of PA that is). There are three:

Deathwatch Scout Armour.
Fenris Pattern Wolf Helm.
Skull Helm.

In all instances their Requisition Cost is N/A.

Now, in the case of Scout Armour, that's a mission by mission thing, either assigned by the GM or requested by a PC. Furthermore it would seem odd to pay Requisition to downgrade from Power Armour, so the N/A makes sense. In the case of the Skull Helm, only Chaplains have that, so you can never requisition it. Chaplains get one automatically, and no one else can get one. So, the N/A is one again fair enough.

But what about the Wolf Helm? It's not tied to any career or speciality? There are no clear rules on how one would get one, and it seems like it should be something someone could requisition. It's a bit like the Apothecaries Diagnostor Helm or the Librarians Psychic Hood - both are special things that can be requested, so how does one get a Wolf Helm, and how much should it cost? Is the N/A there a mistake?

Thanks! :)

Be a space wolf and ask for it, I'd say!

It's a way of not screwing wolves out of "Wolf senses" and nothing more.

I understand its purpose, but it seems odd that it cannot be Requisitioned because it has no cost.

I don't think N/A means cannot be requisitioned, so much as "Doesn't have to be purchased with Requisition"

As its N/A on the requisition, you can't rent it for a mission, nor may you buy it as part of a signature wargear. It can only be awarded to you, by the GM or some other yet to be released campaign or mission supplement, to replace your current PA helm as standard wargear.

So that means I can't get scout armor if I want to play a stealthy Marine unless my DM is kind enough to grant it?

No, the scout armor is N/A because you're going down a rank. The Space Wolf Helm is designed to be gifted to someone based on merrit, or simply as the GM sees fit.

A: What merit?

B: How do you make that distinction, isn't that something a Space wolf should be able to request from their chapter?

A&B: that's for the GM to decide!

You could always ask your GM to make a Space Wolf Distinction for it.

Don't think of the wolf helm as something to req.

Think of it as a bone to throw the yapping dogs to shut them up. gran_risa.gif

Just reminded me of this. But when I say merit, I'm not talking about a book Merit. I'm talking about that a GM should see someone using wolf senses alot, as they should, and then decides when they ask that they deserve the rare helmet which they'res probably only like 10 of at the Watch Station, probably left by dead brothers. I wouldn't see them as able to be reqed, because..well..frankly...it's probably got something that goes up a space wolf' nose somehow, and that'd be gross to clean every time.

Another reasonable interpretation is to allow Space Wolves to take the helm as a Chapter Trapping, which has no req. cost because it is Standard Issue.

Work it into the story....the Space Wolf player does something to merit being issued this special piece of wargear (based upon if the GM thinks of say a single instance of awesomeness or outstanding performance throughout a mission and the Space Wolf Forge Master awards the player with this upgraded helm. Afterall, the Forge Master isn't just gonna give this item to any ol' pup that comes along.
